Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of voice and attitude toward singing in college female students. The participants of study were 50 women who were from 20 to 27 years old(M=22.7), registering for cyber class of a woman’s college in Seoul. The participants were asked to listen to their recorded singing voice file and fill out the open-ended questionnaire about their voice and its contributing factors by using adjective. The data and singing resource were analyzed by content analysis, quantifying the frequency, and the properties and dimensional range of contributing factors were analyzed by modified grounded theory approach. According to the analyzed results, first, there were four categories of voice perception, positive (36%), neutral (2%), negative (54%), and other (8%) perception. Second, the highest percentage of singing resource of participants was kids song (30%), followed by pop song (28%), k-pop (22%), religious song (12%), OST (6%) and opera song (2%). The lyrics of kid’s song were about nature, animal, school life and hometown, containing simple and superficial contents. Third, there were three categories of attitude toward singing, positive (36%), neutral (4%), and negative (60%). Fourth, there were 4 categories, 14 properties, and 16 dimensional ranges of contributing factors of using voice in musical ways. According to the result of this study, over the half of the college female students perceived their voice and singing voice in negative way, and their singing resource was limited and unutilized enough. This study has significance in that it suggests the basic data of relationship between college female students and voice, by figuring out the perception of voice, attitude toward singing and its contributing factors, and genre and characteristics of singing resource.
