Abstract
In this study, the SSI program aims to investigate the influences of high school students’ scientific interest, attitude toward science, decision-making skills, their moral judgments, and their moral sensitivity. Four SSI topics were selected: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), obesity and diet, animal experimentation, and cloning. The program developed lessons 10 class periods targeting 202 high school students in Seoul. Based on each student’s response on the worksheets, we measured their decision-making skills and moral sensitivity, as well as compared their moral judgments before and after SSI instructions. Through a regression analysis, we were able to examine the relationship students’ moral sensitivity and their decision-making skills. To scrutinize the three SSI qualities at a deeper level, ten students were selected to participate in two, pre and post, in-depth interviews after class. Our results indicate that both students’ scientific interest and attitude toward science enhanced (p<.05). In the SSI class, a change in students’ decision-making skills was not quantitatively present. However, qualitatively students’ decision-making skills were shown to have improved after their participation in the SSI lessons. The result from DIT test showed no significant effect(p>.05), but it should be noted that DIT measures developmental levels of moral reasoning. It is reasonable to presume that a more sustained period of time is needed for programmatic effects to impact developmental levels of moral reasoning. For students’ moral sensitivity, four characteristics were discovered: Recognition of moral aspects of a situation, Awareness and empathy for how possible resolutions may affect other people, Anticipation of possible consequences in society, such as side effects, and Examination of different perspectives of a situation. Also, students’ interview data analysis showed that after the SSI lessons, students’ improvement in their moral sensitivity was qualitatively confirmed. Through regression analysis, moral sensitivity was an extension in students’ improvement in their decision-making skills. As the interview data were qualitatively analyzed there was the evidence that students’ decision-making skills was influenced by an improvement in their moral sensitivity. From this research, it has been confirmed that in order to improved students’ reasonable decision-making skills their role in moral sensitivity is significant. SSI education not only improves students’ decision-making skills, but also promotes the development of their moral character and morality. In terms of science education, this study focuses on maintaining scientific grounding and considering the importance of students’ character and their emotions. Key Words: socioscientific issues, scientific interest, attitude toward science, decision-making skills, moral judgments, moral sensitivity. morality
