Abstract
Korean traditional patchwork was popular in Chosun Dynasty when the fabric was precious and the social lifestyle was frugal. It was the necessity of life reflecting the women's wisdom, dream and lifestyle in reality. The patchwork was used by everybody of all classes except the royal family and contained the common aesthetic among women in Chosun Dynasty. Maximum use of remnant cloths and unintentional composition of various planes and colors reflected the women's suppressed emotions and dreams at that time. In this study, I explored the historic background of the patchwork in the Korean culture and try to search the spiritual meaning and pragmatic function of the patchwork. By analyzing the “Korean aesthetic” expressed with the shapes, materials, colors, and composition of the traditional patchworks, I could establish the theoretical ground for my own works. With use of theoretical background of traditional patchwork, I transformed the 'plane' patchwork to the cubic and spatial one and converted the concept of 'necessity' into one of 'expression' by creating modern artworks from necessity-based traditional patchwork. The origin and meaning of the traditional patchwork reflecting the lifestyle of the Chosun Dynasty women are as follows: First, it has the pragmatic function. The patchwork wraps, covers, and transports things and shows the flexibility in the size and shape by containing things. In addition, it was used for various instances such as gift packaging, wedding ceremony, religion, family sacrifice ceremony, and so forth. Second, it has spiritual and symbolic function. By sewing each piece together with devotion Chosun women subsumed their wishes for their family's health and happiness in the patchwork By wishing the family's happiness and concentrating on making a patchwork with an empty mind, it also served as a tool for self-healing moment. At the same time, the patchwork showed expression of theirs aesthetic capabilities and a tool for achievement of self-realization. The Korean aesthetic and nature of creativity, expressed by the tradtional patchwork are as follows: It is more natural than artificial beauty by sewing pieces with various sizes and shapes together. This natural beauty can be found commonly also in the Korean traditional architecture and usual craftworks, and reflects the characteristics of Korean aesthetic. It is not the absence of planning, but the planning of nature itself. Another characteristics found commonly in Hanbok and Korean life crafts are composition of planes and colors. Separating the planes with different colors and putting them together is found frequently. They used the natural bleached colors in the usual time, but used rather splendid colors such as Ohbangsaek in holidays and wedding. Putting things together with various pieces and making harmony between the smooth interstitial colors and splendid Ohbangsaek colors are the characteristics found in the tradtional patchwork. And the sewing technique with unique order and rules shows a superb value in creativity. The results of my own artwork based on the study of Korean aesthetic and the creativity of the traditional patchwork are as follows: First, I used two different fiber materials, transparent and opaque, or sometimes both. The transparent ones were Nobang, mesh, eunjosa and gapsa and the most coarsely woven mesh provided the feeling of floating in the space. The transparency made it possible to express the double structure with sewing two pieces overlapped and to see the internal structure in three-dimensional work effectively. In addition, various shadows made by lights added the variety in the surface pattern. The opaque cloth, cotton was used for its own characteristics and structure without others' interference. Second, I used the two classes of colors. The first class are colorless artworks. The traditional patchwork also used monotonous remie, hemp and white silk and expressed the beauty of colorlessness and geometric composition. I used white cloth itself or stained it with india ink into grey color. I also used threads with the same color to contrast rather the structure of the artwork than the color. Especially with transparent materials, the structure of the work is more highlighted when the color is removed. The second class are artworks with various colors. With this class, I tried to focus more on the structure rather than the contrast of colors by continuous repetitions of colors. Third, I developed a unique method to create my artwork. I transformed the traditional patchwork's planes into three-dimensions and created cubic units with those planes on each sides. For cubic structure, I used two methods. One is sewing cloths together. For opaque and thick cloths, only with this method, it was possible to make a relief structure. The other one is use of metal wire, sewed together with cloths. For transparent and thin cloths, the metal wire made the relief structure possible. This unique cubic structure embraced the shadow by light and expanded into the space by those shadows. Forth, for installation of artworks, I used the flexible characteristics of cloths and gravity to hang down them naturally. The artwork with cubic structure revealed a unique feature and maximized the material characteristics of cloths by hanging down and overlapping. Artworks using transparent and thin cloths changed their shape while hanged down because of gravitational forces. Especially overlapped two pieces showed moire phenomenon and the observer were able to enjoy the different abstract images while changing their positions. Artworks with opaque and thick cloths had more gravities and changed their shapes even more while hanged down. By Changing the installation methods, I could create various expressions of textile artworks.
