Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the unique thoughts of Wang Yang-ming, which overcame the problems inherent in the logic of the Ch’eng-Chu(程朱) school and suggested the notion of dynamic practicability as an alternative means toward attaining the sage as propagated by Confucianists. Wang Yang-ming’s logic motivates individuals to act dynamically, voluntarily and immediately by resolving the tedious state and the potential permanence of isolation as the source of alienation among humans. Such a concept enables the betterment of humanity and guarantees the premise thereof. This paper posits that Wang Yang-ming’s philosophy of practicability is best illustrated through the notion of chih liang-chih (致良知). Chih liang-chih essentially refers to the extension of the innate knowledge [liang-chih (良知)], which is a key notion that replaced the ideas of principle[li (理)] championed by the Ch’eng-Chu school. Whereas the Ch’eng-Chu school had created a dichotomy between factors, including li/ch’i (理·氣), hsin/hsing (心·性), hsing/ching (性·情), weifa/i-fa (未發·已發), and ching/tung (動·靜), and developed a fixation upon the dualistic spectrum, Wang Yang-ming’s liang-chih successfully overcame this dilemma as a fluid and harmonious concept without disjointedness that incorporates all of the dualistic opposites. The development of this internal attribute allows mankind to enrich its innate knowledge to the utmost through real action in connection with the world, without the passivity of being led by an external factor. In short, Wang Yang-ming’s contention is that individual human beings are capable of keenly sensing aspects of reality and self-generating a system of new values in response, and that each individual must be enabled to complete the self and achieve social harmony. This paper places focus on the fact that this philosophy of Wang Yang-ming was shaped in the process of criticizing and confronting the then-dominant doctrines of the Ch’eng-Chu school. Critical of the alienation induced by disconnected fixation and the limitations that lead human beings to passivity, the idea of dynamic practicability became stronger within the thoughts of Wang Yang-ming as a form of intuitive moral sensitivity in response to the established power structure. Although separated by chronological sequence, major theories discussed by Wang Yang-ming, such as hsin chi li (心卽理), chih hsing ho-i (知行合一), and chih liang-chih (致良知), are consistent with the theme of encouraging the practice of dynamic practicability. First, as principle is replaced by the mind, the mind resolves stagnant fixations [hsin chi li]. Second, the mind refers to the connection between man and the world which precludes the alienation of individuals and results in the mode of learning as the unity of knowledge and action [chih hsing ho-i], which gives rise to a form of spontaneous and forthright practicability. Third, chih liang-chih is an underlying notion of his philosophy that succinctly asserts the possibility of activating the mind and reaching its potential in actuality. The concept of chih liang-chih demonstrates that the combination of the mind and the act of studying manifests in a form of practicability as the continuation of myriad matters both real and diverse, and that therein lies the substance of the concept. Chih liang-chih is of particular significance in that it signals the possibility of advancing toward equality and freedom which were absent in the prior, prevailing theories of Confucianism. Wang Yang-ming held that everyone possesses innate knowledge and focused on the equality of capability to initiate action, which is well illustrated in the debate over the perspectives on methods of managing the people, characterized as reforming the people [xinmin (新民)] as opposed to loving the people [qinmin (親民)]. In addition, the unconstrained capability of setting knowledge in motion is more evident in the debate in relation with Four Dicta[sijujiao (四句敎)], and the lunatic (狂者) as the embodiment of Wang Yang-ming’s teachings, which showed the socio-historical context of the audacious practicability and drastic changes incurred by Wang Yang-ming’s theories. By proving the aforementioned, this study aims to redefine the meaning and significance of Wang Yang-ming’s philosophy as offering a driving force in the notion of dynamic practicability, which enables individuals to resist the systems and authorities of the establishment, thereby removing the widespread preconception of Confucianism as a suppressive ideology that dominates and forces normative principles. Especially, Wang Yang-ming’s philosophy of enabling man to reach its moral potential retains relevance in contemporary society where self-estrangement and social isolation prevail. Dynamic practicability encourages individuals to pursue self-mastery beginning with personal and specific agendas in order to induce direct changes in intimate connection to the world. After all, resistance and changes to irrational authority or wrongful power structures can only be brought by individuals with liang-chih. Furthermore, this study aims to demonstrate that the concept of practicability as espoused by Wang Yang-ming is proven by his system of thought itself. His philosophy evolved by challenging and overcoming the existing orthodoxy, and as his ideas underwent changes, the doctrine of Wang Yang-ming also saw its rise. His philosophy itself is proof that the dynamic aspect of practicability is manifest in reality as well.
