<로스트(Lost)>에 나타나는 마이클 지아키노의 드라마 음악 특징 연구

Abstract

‘미드’열풍으로 국내에서 미국 드라마의 위상이 높아짐과 동시에 드라마 음악 또한 인기를 얻고 있다. 인기 있는 미국 드라마들을 살펴보면 몇 년에 걸친 대장정의 시즌을 이어갈 수 있는 다중 플롯의 복잡한 이야기로 이전의 한국 드라마에서는 잘 찾아 볼 수 없던 다양한 소재들과 예측 불가능한 스토리 전개로 이루어져있는 것이 대부분이다. 이러한 드라마들은 참신한 영상에 맞게 드라마 음악에서도 장르나 편성의 다양성 등으로 새로운 시도들이 잘 나타나고 있다. 본 논문은 열풍의 주역 중 하나였던, 감독 J.J. 에이브람스(J.J. Abrams, 1966~)와 영상음악 작곡가 마이클 지아키노(Michael Giacchino, 1967~)가 협업을 하여 여러 시상식에서 작품상과 음악상을 수상하기도 한 <로스트 시즌1>의 음악을 연구대상으로 선정하여 과연 작곡가 마이클 지아키노는 어떻게 감독의 연출의도를 음악적 요소로 표현하고 있는지에 중점을 둔 연구이다. <로스트>는 현실에서는 있을 수 없는 복합적 소재들과 의문 가득한 미지의 섬이라는 설정을 드라마로 만들었다는 점이 줄거리나 장르적인 측면에서 이미 차별화되고 있다. 게다가 음악적으로도 영상의 분위기와 이미지를 동일시하기 위해 많은 시도가 담겨있다. 드라마 음악의 가능성을 넓혀준 마이클 지아키노에 대한 연구는 작곡가적 관점에서 볼 때 의미 있는 일이 될 것이며, 국내외를 막론하고 드라마 음악에 관한 연구가 매우 부족하기에 앞으로 해당 논문이 드라마 음악 발전에 보탬이 되고자 하는데 본 연구의 의의가 있는 바이다. 연구 방법으로 먼저 드라마의 음악 큐 시트를 작성하여 음악의 삽입 점에 대한 분석을 함으로 작곡가의 음악 사용 의도와 음악의 역할을 파악하였다. 작곡가는 크게 주요 인물들의 인물테마와 미지의 섬에서 벌어지는 사건 사고에 관한 주요 상황음악들로 구분 지어 음악을 설정하였다. 또한 각 에피소드의 스토리에 따라 음악들을 배치하였기에 전 24화에 보여지는 인물테마와 상황음악의 분포도를 작성하여 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말에 해당하는 네 부분으로 줄거리를 나누었다. 그리고 각 구조마다 줄거리에 따라 빈번하고 핵심적으로 사용된 인물테마와 상황음악을 선정하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, <로스트 시즌1>에 나타나는 마이클 지아키노의 드라마 음악 특징은 먼저 음악적 구조로 인물테마와 상황음악을 설정하여, 등장인물들의 존재와 성격이 드러날 때 혹은 그들의 관계형성이나 대립 시, 그리고 미스터리, 긴박, 삶과 죽음 등과 같은 스토리 전개의 주요한 상황마다 상응하는 음악을 배치할 수 있도록 하였다. 드라마의 분위기와 장르가 현실적이지 않은 소재를 배경으로 한 미스터리라는 특징을 갖고 있으므로, 음악적으로는 전자악기의 패드적 사운드와 조성이 없는 어쿠스틱 악기 사운드의 조합을 활용한 새로운 음색으로 표현하였다. 게다가 어쿠스틱 악기로 현대음악적인 기법을 사용하여 화면의 분위기와 상황에 음악이 일치할 수 있도록 하였다. 특히 트롬본을 음향효과적으로 사용한 점이 가장 큰 특징 중 하나이다. 음악적인 다양성을 보여주고 있는 작품으로 <로스트>에서의 음악은 드라마의 완성도와 작품성에 기여하는 주요한 요소로 작용하고 있다. 이러한 점에서 <로스트 시즌1>의 음악 분석에 관한 본 연구는 국내에서는 처음으로 이루어지는 연구라는 점에서 연구의 희소성과 의의를 인정받을 수 있을 것으로 사려 된다. 앞으로 본 논문을 시작으로 미국 드라마 음악뿐 아니라 우리나라를 포함한 전세계 드라마 음악에 관한 다양한 연구가 활성화되고 이를 통해 드라마 음악을 위한 다양하고 체계적인 문헌이 구축되어 드라마 음악의 발전에 밑거름이 되기를 바라는 바이다.;Due to the ‘American Drama’ craze in Korea, the status of the American TV series is enhanced and their soundtrack is gaining popularity as well. If one takes a good look on the popular American TV series, most of them are sagas of several seasons that would last for years. Unlike the conventional Korean dramas, most American dramas have multiple plots and complicated storylines, based on various themes and unpredictable stories unfolding. Along with the fresh visuals, these dramas are trying new attempts for the soundtrack as well by varying the genre or arrangement. This paper’s subject of study is the soundtrack of <LOST Season 1> which was the collaboration of director J.J. Abrams(1966~) and film music composer Michael Giacchino(1967~). The TV series was awarded outstanding drama series and best soundtrack in various award ceremonies. This paper is focused on how the composer Michael Giacchino is expressing the director’s intentional through musical elements. <Lost> is a differentiated drama regarding its plot and genre. The series is set in an unknown island full of mystery using compounding subjects that cannot exist in the real world. The study on Michael Giacchino will be meaningful from a composer’s point of view because he is the one who raised the potential of TV series soundtrack music. There are insufficient studies on TV series soundtrack music so this paper’s intention is to contribute to the enhancement of the music genre. The methodology used was analyzing the points where the music was inserted, by creating a music cue sheet of the soundtrack. The purpose was to understand the composer’s intention in using the music and what role the music would take. First, I divided the soundtrack to theme music of main characters and situational music about incidents and accidents happening in the mysterious island. The music was inserted according to the storyline of each episode. Thus I created a distribution chart of them music and situation music in all 24 episodes. Then I broke down the story to four stages - exposition, complication, climax, and conclusion. In addition, I selected and analyzed the essential music themes that are frequently used in each stage. The conclusion of the study is as the following. The key feature of Michael Giacchino’s TV series soundtrack music in <Lost Season 1> is that the musical structure was built upon themes according to the main characters and situations. The corresponding music was used when the existence or personality of a character is revealed or when a relationship is formed or conflicts. The music also differed according to major events in the story such as a mystery, an urgent matter, a matter of life and death and so forth. Because it is a mystery drama which has surreal atmosphere and subjects, <Lost Season 1> has a new timbre combining the pad sounds of electronic musical instruments and acoustic sounds that have no tonality. Furthermore, the acoustic musical instruments used modern musical techniques to match the music to the atmosphere and situation of the screen. It is notable that trombone was used as a sound effect. <Lost> shows musical variety which is working as an important element to contribute to the completion and quality of the TV series. In this regard, this paper on the musical analysis of <Lost Season 1> would be acclaimed for the scarcity and meaning as it is the first study of this kind in Korea. I hope this paper to be the foundation of facilitating various studies not only on TV series soundtrack music from the US but also from the world including Korea. I further wish that there would be more diverse and systematical literature on this subject and thus help the enhancement of TV series soundtrack music in general.
