Abstract
Recently in Korea, the words such as “healing” and “recovery” have been frequently used in daily life, compared to a few years ago that the words had not been considered important in academics and culture of Korea. One of the reasons that these words have been frequently used could mean that many people in the society are dealing with pressure, stress and hopelessness. Highly-performance-driven culture in Korean society has been encouraging competition continuously, bringing about mental health challenges among people including depression, work addiction, internet and smartphone addiction. Moreover, Korea now has a record as one of the highest suicide ranking among countries. Thus, the society is sick. It is widely understood that people have the lower chance of being depressed and committing suicide if they have healthy relationships with other people and belong to a healthy community regardless of its size. However, it is quite difficult to find the community in the modern society, and also there are other social challenges including the lack of moral in leadership and the breakdown of social norms. Indeed our modern society needs ‘healing.’ Methodologies of psychiatric treatment are diverse, including psychiatric therapy, counseling, music and dance therapy. The important point for patients is to choose the method that is the most appropriate for themselves. This study starts from the recognition that the creation of visual art could play a role of psychiatric treatment that relieves the inner mind. As deeply considering the inner mind during the “healing” process, the author found that the formative grammar of her art works changed from the way she pursued before. Specifically, the author created the art works for this study by mostly using lines, and the works are closely involved with lines’ length, tension, distribution, and the breath control for drawing clean lines. As focusing on the art works, the author became interested in the psychoanalytic theory of Edith Kramer, Studio Art Therapy and Relational Aesthetics. Also the author recognized the originality of the art works in the diverse approaches to draw lines. As going through this process, the author could concentrate on the inner mind and experienced “being healed” through the art expressions. The art expressions included some changes in shape, color, line during the “healing” process, especially the changes in line and color. And then the author tried to find commonality between art expressions of other artists and the ones in her works. These art expressions that were seen when the restoration process occurred in the inner mind are the core of the author’s art works. The author puts the value of the art works on the restoration process, during which complicated emotional problems in the inner mind are solved through the formative arts. Therefore, the main contribution of the art works as well as this study is the restoration that could also happen to people who see the art works just as the “healing” process happened to the author herself.
