Abstract
African-American music started from negro spirituals, which was sung by Africans that were forced to live as slaves in the United States. Among negro spirituals, Afro-Americans took labour song as a method to express themselves and created their own religious music, which was inspired by western Christian music. In the middle of the 19th century labour song developed to Blues music. Also, during the late 19th century, Christian music in the Revivalist Movement in America contributed to African-American’s religious music and created a new genre which is called ‘Gospel’ in the early 20th century. The development of Afro-American music was not only just limited to the birth of Gospel but the birth of many other genres of music, such as Ragtime, Rock and Roll and Jazz, a genre with improvisation. Nowadays, all the genres mentioned previously are called ‘Afro-American music.’ John Carter(1932-1981), one of the Afro-American composers, left his musical works in various music genres, such as vocal music, instrumental music, string music, ballet music - including religious music - throughout his entire life. Furthermore, an Afro-American musical melody coexists with elements of Western music in Carter’s work. One of them is , which is a masterpiece of Carter’s work as well as what this paper is about. The piece was composed in 1959 and performed by Leontyne Price(1927~) in Constitution Hall for the first time. This piece consists of 5songs, the 1st song is Prelude, 2nd is Rondo, 3rd is Recitative, 4th Air, and 5th is Toccata. They all are composed based on Negro spiritual’s melody line and lyrics, and the use of exquisite jazz harmonies makes these songs more colorful. The paper, research on Afro-American music based on five songs of , examined history of Afro-American music starting with Negro spirituals. Then, this paper then focused on jazz idiom and history to support research. After briefly looking at John Carter’s life, the five Songs of Cantata was analyzed throughout the paper. John Carter used the formation of melody on Pentatonic Scale, Blue note and modes and the features of syncopation, polyrhythm, and compound rhythm and the use of variety rhythms containing Afro-American characteristics. Also, He added major 6th and 7th on basic three harmonies, extended 7th 9th 11th harmonies – or used Tension Chord – and used Authentic Cadence, V-I (for harmony of the song) as well as traditional Cantata, Prelude, Rondo, Toccata structure in his piece. Overall, the paper was written about how John Carter used unique characteristics of both Afro-American music and Traditional Western Music.
