Fictional Narrative Storytelling to Introduce Korean Culture

Abstract

본 논문은 허구적 네러티브 스토리텔링 방법을 이용하여 한국의 결혼문화와 과정을 미국 중학생들에게 알리고자 하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 또한 에듀테이먼트 스토리텔링 기법을 통해 “한국인의 결혼이야기” 라는 제목의 창작 소설을 영문으로 작성하였는데, 이는 독자들이 ‘한국의 결혼문화’ 라는 다소 진부 할 수도 있는 소재에 조금 더 흥미롭고 즐겁게 다가갈 수 있도록 하기 위함이다. 본 논문은 실제 수업에서 모형이 될 수 있도록 개발하였으며, 한국문화 교육을 위한 부교재로도 사용되었으면 하는 바램을 두고 소개한다. 본 논문의 전반부에서는, 에듀테이먼트 스토리텔링에 대하여 소개하고, 창작소설을 만든 과정과 의의에 대해 설명하고 있다. 그리고 창작 소설 안에서 한국의 결혼문화에 대한 실제 정보를 전달하기 위해서 사용한 비허구적 기법에 대해 다루고 있다. 본 논문의 후반부에서는, 결혼을 앞둔 한 예비부부의 결혼 준비과정을 한국의 예식 관례와 접목하여 사례로 제시한다. 이는 허구의 창작 스토리로, 두 주인공의 프로포즈, 상견례, 결혼 준비 과정, 함 보내기, 예식, 신혼여행 후의 이바지 이야기까지 여섯 개의 에피소드 챕터로 구성되었으며, 각 챕터 뒤에는 부과적 정보 설명을 위한 질의응답 섹션을 통해 한국 결혼문화에 대한 정보가 부족한 독자의 이해를 돕는다. 추후, 에듀테인먼트를 위한 스토리텔링 기법을 활용하여 한 나라의 문화를 소개하고 알리고자 하는 자료를 만들 때 참고 모델로 활용되기를 기대한다.;The globalized world has prompted a need to understand other cultures and find common ground with others for a variety of beneficial relationships. Some countries have already approved of multicutural approaches to planning curricula, increasing the demand for texts that provide insight into the lives and customs of foreign and minority cultures. With the increased awareness of Korean popular culture, the perfect opportunity to introduce Korean culture to these curricula has arrived, and this thesis provides a an educational but entertaining (edutainment) product to introduce to the classroom. Using the principles of storytelling to keep the audience enthralled and receptive to receiving information, the storybook entitled Tying the Knot: A Korean Wedding Story would be a great addition to add to a classroom module of Korean culture studies. The first part of the thesis explains the definition of edutainment storytelling, illustrates parts of the creative process, and discusses the use of non-fictional techniques for transmitting facts about Korea. The second part of the thesis is a story that blends elements of fiction with facts about Korea into a fictional “case study” of two people getting married in Korea. The narrative follows the two characters from the proposal, to preparations, to the ceremony, to after the honeymoon in six episodic sections. Each narrative section is followed by a short informative section that provides additional information related to the content of the corresponding narrative section. Hopefully, this thesis will encourage the creation of more edutainment products that use the storytelling method to create interest in a target culture.
