Abstract
In this thesis, this researcher studied the process of the figuration of the intangible and invisible world of light as visual illusion. With focus on this researcher’s works, this researcher aims to explore the symbolic and formative meaning of light and to expand the formative domain where the phenomena and image of light can harmoniously be expressed and to express the aesthetic consciousness of light as ceramic art. For this researcher, light is a means of conversion into symbolism and sensitivity. In the process of the figuration of light, one should reach subjective thinking that shows a world behind reality besides visible objective thinking due to invisible characteristics of light. This is reappearance as a materialized form through convergence of actuality and imaginary image and a thinking process in which property of light merges with psychological sensitivity. Such a process can be expressed through imagery that can be said to be mental representation, i.e. inner eyes. Metaphysical forms of light made of clay in this researcher’s works are the ones into which inner symbolic image of light and physical phenomena merged and converted. In other words, in order to reproduce the form of light, the concept of light was expressed metaphorically by merging the dual aspects of the material phenomena and imagery of light. Such convergence of imagery and material phenomena enabled the invisible world to be expressed as the visible world. The outline of light whose existence is dim or the residual image that remains as placid lingering imagery was expressed as concrete forms through the process of thinking. In other words, such phenomena as phantasm, spatiality, transparency, directivity, refraction, shadow, reflection, superposition, floating, and back light create visible images such as visional illusion and this is formless illusion but merged with inner imagery and is represented in the form of light. This is a combination of the symbolic aspect that life is the essence of life and the phenomena of life and it creates a new idea with another hidden image and essence even though there is no concrete object. Emotional interchange on light expressed through such series of process and the forms of optical light create new forms in space or together with another light beyond time and space. This researcher’s expressing the forms of light is to finding out new formative language within the combination of the forms latent in light and imagination. In order to receive inspiration through light and to express forms through light, this researcher attempts to view light not only as physical and scientific concept but also as a paradigm of philosophical thinking. Accordingly, as preliminary research on the modeling of light, the philosophical and symbolic concepts of light and the visual perceptual concepts and physical concepts of light in formative work were discussed in Chapter II, and the formativeness of light that has been changing from ancient times to modern times and the concepts of light that change psychologically and visually were discussed chronologically and in what expression method and characteristics the artists in each age expressed the concepts and senses of light in the works were examined in Chapter III. Chapter Ⅳ describes the process of forming the false and true images of light by combining the physical image and mental image of a work, as well as the visual softness of white porcelain as formativeness of light through white porcelain, and the slip casting for ceramics installation format. At the center or in the stage of forming light as formativeness of light expressed in the researcher's work, described are the after-image, namely, the light's physical, symbolic, and visual exchange with the researcher, as well as subjective visuality, visual illusion and mental image, light in the space, the false image of shadows, and thoughts about the invisible. As such, this paper presented the examples of formativeness of light expressed in works, explored in which emotions and thoughts the light was expressed in an effort to offer the theoretical grounds for the researcher's analysis of works. In this researcher’s work, light is the process of thinking on invisible things through the combination of inner eyes and light, the convergence of the shape of objects and imagery and the combination of actuality and imaginary image. The perspective of viewing light as the convergence of actuality and imaginary image is expressed as metaphorical forms through thinking, and creates forms of light by making not only the visible world but also the invisible world perceived. The study on the modeling of the convergence of the shape of objects and imagery of light has significance in the development of aesthetic expression of forms and in the expansion of the formative domain of ceramic art expressed as light.;본 논문은 무형적이고 비 가시적인 빛의 세계를 시각적 환영(illusion)으로써 형상화하는 과정을 연구한 것이다.
