영화 <인셉션>의 음악 분석을 통한 음악적 특징과 기능 연구

Abstract

As the development of computer industry drove the imaging technology, movie's contents and genre range grew wider. Along with this improvement, movie scenario is becoming more creative and intelligent, and movie music's function is growing in importance gradually. Christopher Nolan's <Inception, 2010>, which is based on fictive reality, a dream, describes the story of penetrating into one's dream to insert or extract certain thoughts. The scenario where two backgrounds -dream and reality- intertwine is very complicated. This study evaluates how music can aid the effective expression of a scenario's structure. First, we studied Hollywood's electronic music history and the life and workpieces of <Inception>'s music director, Hans Zimmer(1957) in order to asses his musical background and style. For the study method, we extracted the music used in the movie based on in and out cue sheet, and selected 34 core scenes. The selected pieces were analyzed to see how it contributed in expressing the scene's structure and plot. By analysis, the movie <Inception>'s music was expressing the scenario's structure using basic musical elements as well as diverse methods like color and sound editing through sound effects. Through short theme pattern using minimalistic musical technique expressed the movie's core element, "time." Also, Zimmer effectively mixed orchestra sounds with synthesizers to describe the exclusivity of dreams. And by extracting a portion of source music sound of reality background and elongating it, he created a brand new music. This is to describe the fact that time at dreams flow slower than reality. By contrasting the source music and the elongated one, the scenario of overlapping time is made auditory also. The movie <Inception> used music not only for supplementary factor to explain the character's feelings, conflicts, or situation. It serves a broader function as a part of the movie itself by enhancing the story's plot and structure. We hope through this study there could be more research on movie music's function and possibilities, and that various musical technique and idea could continuously develop the field. ;컴퓨터 산업 발전에 따른 영상 기술의 발달로 영화가 표현할 수 있는 내용과 장르의 범위는 점점 더 넓고 다양해져가고 있다. 이러한 발전과 더불어 영화의 시나리오는 한층 더 획기적이고 창조적으로 진보하고 있으며 이를 뒷받침해주기 위한 영화 음악의 기능과 역할 또한 점차 확대되어가고 있다. 꿈이라는 가상현실을 배경으로 하는 크리스토퍼 놀란 감독의 영화 <인셉션 Inception, 2010>은 다른 사람의 꿈에 침투하여 생각을 심거나 빼내오는 스토리이다. 꿈과 현실이라는 두 개의 배경이 서로 교차하며 전개되는 영화의 시나리오는 매우 어렵고 복잡한 구조를 가진다. 본 논문은 영화의 시나리오 구조를 효과적으로 표현하기 위해 음악이 어떠한 역할과 기능을 담당하고 있는지 연구해본다. 먼저 헐리우드 역사 속 전자 음악사와 영화 <인셉션>의 음악 감독인 한스 짐머(Hans Zimmer, 1957)의 생애와 작품경향을 살펴봄으로써 그의 음악적 배경과 스타일을 알아보았다. 연구방법에 있어서는 영화에서 사용된 음악의 인 앤 아웃을 큐시트를 바탕으로 정리하였고, 음악이 중점적으로 사용된 34개의 장면을 선정하였다. 각 장면에서 등장하는 음악이 영화의 구조와 전개를 표현하기 위해 어떠한 기능과 역할을 하고 있는지 분석하였다. 음악의 분석 결과, 영화 <인셉션>의 음악은 아주 기본적인 음악적 요소들에서부터 음향 효과를 통한 사운드의 색채감, 음원 편집 등의 다양한 방법들을 통해 시나리오의 구조를 표현하고자 하였다. 미니멀한 음악적 기법을 사용한 짧은 테마 패턴을 반복하여 “시간”이라는 영화의 중요한 소재를 효과적으로 표현하였다. 또한 한스 짐머의 음악적 특징이라고 할 수 있는 오케스트라와 신디사이저 악기의 결합된 사운드를 통해 꿈이라는 가상현실의 특수성을 잘 묘사하였다. 그리고 현실의 배경에서만 등장하는 소스음악의 일부분을 잘라 사운드의 길이를 길게 늘어뜨리는 편집 효과를 통해 새로운 음악을 작곡하였다. 이는 현실보다 느리게 흐르고 있는 꿈속의 시간 개념을 음악에도 적용시켜 영화의 시나리오를 표현하는 역할을 한다. 소스 음악 원곡과 사운드 길이를 편집하여 작곡한 곡을 꿈과 현실이라는 두 배경에 대비적으로 배치하여 사용함으로써 시공간이 교차하며 전개되는 시나리오의 구조를 음악을 통한 청각적 효과로도 표현하고자 했음을 알 수 있었다. 영화 <인셉션>의 음악은 인물의 감정이나 갈등, 배경적 상황을 설명해주는 보조적 수단이 아니라 스토리 전개와 구성을 철저히 고려하여 만든 영화의 아주 중요한 구성요소로써 기존의 영화 음악 보다 훨씬 더 확장된 기능을 수행하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 영화 음악의 기능과 역할에 관한 연구가 더 활발하게 이루어지기를 바라며 앞으로 더 다양한 음악적 기법과 아이디어를 통해 영화에서 음악의 기능과 역할이 계속된 발전을 이루길 바란다.
