식물 화석의 이미지를 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

A human being living modern society has dreamed of 'return to nature'. In the process of representing the desire a human creative imagination is activated, combined with intention, and leads to a variety of genres of formative work in the field of fashion design. This research chooses fossils, as part of nature, which reveal the constant change, generation, and extinction of nature and play an important part in a long history of living creatures and attempts to represent the beauty of formation of the image of plant fossils as a fashion design. The purpose of this thesis is to create a cubic effect out of subjectively observing and transforming the image of plant fossils, develop a value of new representation creating a high value, and utilize it in a modern fashion design. The contents and methods of this study include understanding the formative characteristics of the types of fossils through various research from references and pictures and examine the instances of utility in a modern design. Based on this analysis, I produce eight clothes which are focused on the formative beauty of the unique material in the process of transformation and modification of the image of plant fossils. Techniques such as silk screen as a way of representation of relief in plant fossils, embroidery, under cutting in a production process are involved to pursue a decorative effect, and forty's silk material softens the hard image of fossils, creating utility as well as a natural image. The conclusions of this thesis are as follows. Firstly, the rich colors and formations of plant fossils themselves can be produced in various forms of a design motive. Secondly, the dyed colors from a natural color and felt out of the major color of fossils can be harmonized, enhancing their finest value. Thirdly, a silk screen technique which is mainly used in printing on a smooth surface can represent a unique tactual sense of material without transforming the material itself. Fourthly, undercutting technique is adequate for felt in a practical aspect and the expression of formation of sunk relief, relief image of plant fossils in an artificial regard. Lastly, this image and technique are adequate to produce high value added in a fashion design. The variety of motives and techniques can be adopted and expanded to the future oriented textual development in combining artificiality with utility. The applied motives and the variety of techniques above expand the realm of figurative expression and induce a designer's sense of beauty and the material development filled with future-oriented concept, which leads to improve the high value added products. The product strategy which is combined solid felt based on artificial work to represent the plant fossil image with 40's silk item focused on utility generates the competition of consumption value. This confirms the formation of value of fashion design distinguished from general form of practical design.;현대인들은 끊임없는 ‘자연에로의 회귀’를 꿈꾸고 있다. 이를 표현하는 과정에서 인간의 상상력을 결부시켜 예술이란 형식으로 다양한 장르의 조형작업을 하게 되고, 이러한 조형의지는 단순한 모방의 단계에서 발전하여 인간의 의지가 개입된 새로운 이미지를 창출하기에 이르렀다. 따라서 창의적인 재질 표현을 강조하고 있는 현대 미술의 흐름에 따라 의상에서도 소재개발에 대한 관심이 고조되고, 이러한 관심은 각종 다양한 기법 개발과 더불어 그 표현양식을 다양화 시키고 있다. 화석(化石)이란 지질시대에 실제 생존하던 생물의 흔적으로 이것은 인공의 힘이 전혀 가해지지 않은 자연의 일부이자 생명의 역사를 해명하는데 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 화석을 연구 대상으로 선택하였고, 그 중에서도 식물 화석의 이미지가 가진 조형미를 의상디자인으로 표현하였다. 식물 화석은 생명체의 존재여부가 불확실하던 약 35억 년 전 선캄브리아기에 이미 존재가 입증된 조류(藻類)의 형태로부터 진화의 역사가 시작된다는 점, 그리고 다른 화석군에 비해 크게 번성하였다는 점 등에서 의미 있는 연구 대상이다. 본 연구는 이러한 식물 화석의 이미지를 관찰하여 조형성을 분석하고 현대 의상의 새로운 표현 방법으로서의 가치를 개발하여 고부가가치를 창출하는 상품군으로 발전시키는데 그 목적을 두고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 우선 화석의 개념과 종류에 관하여 문헌 및 사진 자료를 통해 분석함으로써 연구 대상인 식물 화석의 조형성을 파악하고, 현대 디자인에 있어서 활용의 예를 살펴보았다. 이러한 이론을 바탕으로 총 8점의 의상을 제작하였으며 식물 화석의 이미지를 표현하는 과정에서 소재의 질감을 표현하는 데 중점을 두었다. 식물 화석 이미지의 부조적 표현 방법으로는 실크스크린(silk screen), 현대자수(embroidery), 언더커팅(under cutting) 등의 표현기법을 적용하여 장식적인 효과를 추구하였다. 또한 40수 실크 소재를 사용하여 화석의 경직된 이미지를 부드럽고 자연스러운 이미지로 표현하고 실용성을 강조하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 얻어진 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 식물 화석 자체의 풍부한 색감과 조형성은 다양한 디자인을 창출해 낼 수 있었다. 둘째, 화석의 주요 색상인 내추럴 컬러와 펠트(felt)를 염색하여 얻을 수 있는 색채가 자연스럽게 잘 조화됨으로서 소재에서 오는 고급스러운 느낌을 한층 높일 수 있었다. 셋째, 주로 매끈한 표면에 프린트했던 실크스크린 기법은, 본 연구에서 시도한 바와 같이 펠트류의 기모성 표면에 프린트 될 때, 굳이 소재를 변형하지 않더라도 독특한 재질감을 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 본 연구에서 표현되어진 언더커팅 기법은 실용적 측면에서는 올이 풀리지 않는 펠트에 아주 적합하였으며, 예술적 측면에서는 식물 화석의 부조적 이미지, 즉 심조(sunk relief)의 조형성 표현에 매우 적합한 기법이었다. 다섯째, 본 연구에서의 주소재인 펠트는 오랜 세월만큼이나 깊고 신비한 색채와 조형성을 가진 식물 화석의 이미지를 표현하기에 잘 어울리는 소재였으며, 펠트를 이용한 염색, 실크스크린 프린트, 현대자수, 언더커팅 기법 등은 식물 화석의 디자인 모티브를 표현하는데 아주 적합한 기법이었다. 이와 같이 의상에 도입할 수 있는 모티브와 기법의 다양화는 조형적 표현의 영역을 확장 시키고 다양한 미의식과 다양한 소재 개발로 이어져 고부가가치 상품군으로 더욱 성장할 수 있는 가능성을 지니게 된다. 본 연구와 같이 식물 화석의 이미지를 형상화시키기 위한 조형작업에 비중을 둔 의상디자인에 solid felt와 40’s silk를 매치하는 아이템 구성은 실용성을 겸비한 상품화 전략으로 일반적 개념의 실용 의상과는 차별화된 의상디자인으로서의 경쟁력을 확인할 수 있었다.
