Abstract
This thesis is a study about the identity as an immigrant, which appears in art works of Mona Hatoum. Hatoum was born in 1952 from a Palestinian family, who exiled to Lebanon due to the foundation of Israel. Accordingly, she had to face exile from her mother country with her birth. In the middle of her trip in England, she immigrates to England due to the civil war in Lebanon. This incident became a cause for Hatoum's global wander until today. Also, her life as an immigrant made her to realize that there is a power logic in the cause and effect of migration. Her works portrayed the identity as an immigrant, by criticizing diverse aspects of main stream power struggle both directly and indirectly. Like this, migration was a core subject not only to the Hatoum's life but also to her art works. However, Hatoum's existing studies were focused on her use of grid structure, a debate regarding artistic formality. Accordingly, her works in various genres and methods, such as performance, video art, installation, object, and photography, were examined separately. This thesis studies Hatoum's identity shown through her criticism over the main stream society Hatoum confronted through her typical experience as an immigrant, such as white supremacy, patriarchy, nationalism, and even modernism. This provides a holistic perspective of presuming her previous art works. First of all, in her performances in 1980's, Hatoum sees her identity as a Palestinian. She metaphors herself as a sacrificed Palestinian of Western powers, or accuses white supremacy in hegemonies of strong nations through sound system. Also, she tries to resist against superiority and exclusiveness of native Westerns, by comprising materials and places which mirror a meaning of racism and xenophobia. Hatoum's art works after 1990's present migrating experience in a broader context. Her grid not only mobilizes visual and tactual interpretations but also comprises of her autobiographical experiences. This rejects modernism art as formalism which appeared as an exclusion of socal, historical, individual identity, and immigrants in the Third World. In particular, Hatoum connected Jewish ambitious dream of pure Israel and grid structure, which works to indicate radical perfection. This type of method effectively accuse a violence of the main stream society, from in and out of an art. Meanwhile, the migrating experience of Hatoum provided a chance to be free from the patriarchic ideology and led her to make art works in an feminism idea. As she consistently pondered on patriarchy system from the time she moved to England, she transformed household objects which symbolize women's housework to a form that alienates those from their original usages. This indicates her stance as a feminist. Such trans-national circumstance enabled Hatoum to realize that nations are unstable communities which can be influenced by governmental power. Transforming specialty of materials and method on national icon is a way of criticizing nationalism. Consequently, this kind of Hatoum's stance concludes into embracing an exile's border-crossing life positively. Hence, Hatoum's works present a nostalgia of a homeland and an ideal of an exile who is not confined in its nationality. For Hatoum, her immigration experience opened up an opportunity to accept her dual-identity as both of a foreigner and a global citizen beyond borders. Her will to escape all sorts of authority that she experienced lies in the root of this identity. Hatoum's previous works reassure the role of art as a passage of portraying aspiration of utopianism.;본 논문은 모나 하툼 Mona Hatoum, 1952~ 의 작업에 나타난 이주민으로서의 정체성을 살펴본 연구다.
