한국 일상툰의 풍자 연구

Abstract

Being adapted for films, TV series, and musicals, or exported abroad, Korean webtoon is receiving attention as an one source which can be multi-used through various platforms. This study assumes that Korean webtoon has its own narrative feature and also represents contemporary Korean public. As opposed to prior studies which only focused on interface, this study derives narrative meaning of webtoon and reveals the significance of historical research. This study pays attention to the fact that webtoon gains public’s sympathy by depicting contemporary metropolis. This study assumes that, in the process of drawing the current era, webtoon shows ‘satire’. This study considers satire as a narrative mode which covers the whole narrative of webtoon, not as a simple technique. This study proves that Korean webtoon belongs to ‘satiric mode’ by analyzing specific texts. Through this process, this study also reveals the relationship between narrative meaning of webtoon and satire mode. Among Korean webtoons, ‘dailytoon’ stands out in terms of its content. In dailytoon, author-representing character appears to be a main character, but he is inferior to the readers in terms of ability and intelligence. Dailytoon adopts korean urban space as a main narrative background. In dailytoon, the individual narratives such as washing up, sleeping, eating appear to be a unit of incident and they reveal ‘everydayness’. One episode of dailytoon takes the form of a short story, and it is published in a form of regular one act play. This study classifies the modes of Korean webtoon according to Frye's theory. By comparing webtoons in terms of ability of main character and whether he successes in solving the problem, this studies reveals that dailytoon belongs to satiric mode. The main character is inferior in ability, lacks intelligence, and also fails to solve his problem. So despite the main character fails to overcome the trials, the story ends. In dailytoon, the main character appears as a target of attack. Thus, he is persecuted and sacrificed from people around due to this ignorance and inferiority. This study pays attention to the fact the dailytoon developed independently, and did not follow the typical conventional literary genres. This study examines the aspects of satire shown in dailytoon through analyzing particular texts. The satire encompasses a variety of techniques effectively. The main character misunderstands the discourse of do not understands the context. It causes verbal irony. He is also frequently observed by people around. The surrounding people persecutes or isolated the protagonist by observing the main character from distance. As a result of this persecution, the hero is eventually expelled from the world to which he belongs to. Dailytoon also sees the contemporary era and situation in a critical view by using parody. It also acts as a popular cultural text by reflecting the cultural codes of contemporary era. Based on above analysis, this study looks at the narrative meaning in regard to contemporary Korean metropolitan. This study pays attention to the fact the dailytoon materializes the tragic reality of Korean urban city as comic. Dailytoon adopts Korean metropolitan as a narrative background. Thus, the urban space has an important narrative meaning in dailytoon. In dailytoon, the main character is unaware of the social function of public space. It satirize the sorrowful reality where there no longer exists individual way of life because of the norm and force of the city. Dailytoon offers an opportunity for readers to recognize the absurdity by showing an narrative catastrophe. The readers learn how to fight back the absurdity through the attitude of main character who accepts and laughs in spite of his tragic fate. Readers feel relieved and get comfort by watching the protagonist, the most important person of narrative, fail. They also feel sympathy by joining the smile of protagonist. Thus, the narrative meaning of dailytoon can be extended to the reality of contemporary Korea. The reason of the popularity of dailytoon lies in the fact that dailytoon presents the tragic reality and absurdity of contemporary Korea indirectly through laughter and bitter satire. Thus, this study reveals that dailytoon belongs to satiric mode. This study also proves that dailytoon could develop into a popular narrative through satiric mode. ;한국 웹툰은 영화, 드라마, 뮤지컬 등 다양한 플랫폼을 통해서 멀티유즈 되고 있으며, 해외에서도 각광받고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 한국 웹툰이 동시대 한국 대중의 현실인식을 반영하는 서사체이자, 독자적인 서사적 특징을 가지고 있다고 전제한다. 선행 연구사들이 웹툰의 인터페이스 연구에만 치중했던 것과는 대조적으로, 본 연구에서는 웹툰이라는 서사체의 의미를 도출하고, 이를 통해 연구사적 의의를 가지고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 웹툰이 한국의 대도시의 인간상을 포착하여 대중의 공감을 얻는다는 점에 주목한다. 이때 웹툰이 현시대를 그려내는 방식이 ‘풍자’라고 전제한다. 본 연구에서는 웹툰에 있어서 풍자가 기법적 차원의 문제가 아니라, 웹툰이 오늘날에 나타난 하나의 풍자 양식이라고 본다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 구체적 텍스트 분석을 통해 한국 웹툰이 ‘풍자 양식’에 속함을 증명한다. 이를 통해 웹툰이 지닌 서사적 의미와 풍자 양식 간의 관계 또한 밝힌다. 이 중에서도 ‘일상툰’은 그 내용면에서 한국 웹툰의 차별점이 두드러지는 유형이다. 일상툰에서는 작가 재현적 인물이 주인공 캐릭터로 등장하는데, 그는 행동능력에 있어서 독자들보다 열등하며 무지하다. 또한 일상툰에서는 한국의 도시 공간을 주요한 서사적 배경으로 채택하고, 세신, 수면, 식사 등 ‘일상성’을 드러내는 개인적 층위의 서사가 사건의 단위로 등장한다. 마지막으로 일상툰의 한 편은 짧은 에피소드 형식을 취하며, 연재 방식에 있어서는 정기 단막극의 형태를 채택한다. 2장에서는 프라이의 서사 양식 이론을 통해 한국 웹툰의 양식을 분류한다. 이때 주인공 인물의 행동 능력과 문제 해결의 성공 여부를 기준으로 웹툰을 비교함으로써 일상툰이 풍자 양식에 속함을 밝힌다. 일상툰의 주인공은 행동능력에 있어서 열등하고 무지하며, 문제 해결에 있어서도 실패한다. 따라서 일상툰에서는 주인공이 자신에게 닥친 문제나 시련을 극복하지 못한 채로 이야기가 종결을 맺는다. 일상툰에서는 주인공 캐릭터가 작가 재현적 인물로 나타나며, 풍자의 대상으로 그려진다. 따라서 주인공 인물은 본연의 무지함, 열등함 등으로 인해 주변 인물에게 박해받고 희생당한다. 본 연구에서는 풍자 양식으로서의 일상툰의 의의를 밝히고, 타 웹툰 유형과는 다르게 기존의 전형적인 문학 장르를 답습하지 않는다는 점에서 일상툰의 의의를 찾았다. 3장에서는 일상툰에 나타난 풍자 양상을 구체적 텍스트 분석을 통해 살펴본다. 이때 풍자는 다양한 기법들을 통해 효과적으로 나타난다. 주인공은 주변 인물들과의 담화를 오해하거나 맥락을 파악하지 못함으로써 언어적 아이러니나 언어유희를 유발한다. 또한 일상툰에서는 주인공이 주변 인물에게 관찰을 당한다는 설정이 빈번히 등장한다. 이때 주변 인물은 관조적 거리에서 주인공을 관찰함으로써 주인공을 격리시키거나 박해한다. 이러한 박해의 결과로 주인공은 결국 자신이 속한 세계로부터 추방된다. 마지막으로 일상툰에서는 패러디 기법을 통해 당대 현실과 시대적 상황을 비판적으로 조망한다. 이때 일상툰은 당대 문화 코드를 시의적으로 반영함으로써 대중적인 문화텍스트로서 기능한다. 이상의 분석을 바탕으로, 본 연구에서는 일상툰이 서사적으로 지니는 의미를 동시대 한국의 대도시와 연결해 살펴본다. 이때 일상툰이 동시대 한국 대도시의 비극적 현실을 희극적으로 인식한다는 점에 주목한다. 일상툰은 서사적 배경으로 한국의 대도시를 차용한다. 따라서 도시 공간은 일상툰에서 중요한 서사적 의미를 지닌다. 일상툰에서는 도시 공간의 사회적 기능을 무시하거나 인지하지 못하는 주인공을 통해, 도시가 부과하는 규범, 도시가 강요하는 삶의 방식에 의해 개인의 의지가 없어진 비애스러운 현실을 풍자한다. 일상툰은 서사적 파국을 제시함으로써 독자들이 당대의 비극적 현실, 즉 부조리를 인식할 수 있는 계기를 마련한다. 그리고 독자들은 비극적 운명을 수용하고 웃는 주인공의 태도와 그 속에서 투쟁하는 자세를 통해 동시대 현실의 부조리함으로부터 맞서는 법을 배운다. 독자들은 주인공이 실패하는 모습을 통해 안도와 위안을 얻는다. 또한 주인공의 웃음에 동참함으로써 주인공이 처한 부조리한 상황에 공감을 형성한다. 이처럼 일상툰의 서사적 의미는 동시대 한국의 현실로 확장시켜 이해할 수 있다. 일상툰이 대중적으로 소비되는 이유는, 바로 동시대 한국의 부조리하고 비극적인 현실을 우회적인 풍자와 씁쓸한 웃음을 통해 제시하기 때문이다.
