Abstract
(And the mountains rising nowhere, 1977)」를 구조와 혁식, 음조직, 화성, 리듬 및 박자, 관현악법 및 기보법의 다섯 가지 측면에서 비교 분석하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. Joseph Schwantner (1943~), American composer, became a famous composer at a young age by winning the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Aftertones of Infinity in 1979. Since then, his active record of performances, multiple prizes, and becoming a standard addition to the wind ensemble repertoire demonstrates Schwantner’s great accomplishments as a composer. Although Schwantner is mostly known as the representative composer of Neo-Romanticism, his output was not originally of this style. Before 1977, Schantner’s works represented a more Modernist serial technique style, and it was not until after 1977, that his works took on a Neo-Romantic nature, partly due to their emphasis on pitch centers. In this way, there are two differing styles in Schwantner's output, before 1977 and after, which are connected primarily through his distinctive orchestration technique. Therefore, to discover the all the features of Schwantner's music, this study makes a comparative analysis of two representative works, each from his two different periods: Consortium I of his early period and And the mountains rising nowhere of his later period. This analysis focuses on five aspects to gain conclusions about his differing styles: texture and form, tone structure, harmony, rhythm and meter; orchestration and notation. In relation to texture and form, the two works show differing contexts; the texture of Consortium I consists of polyphony, while And the mountains rising nowhere is a combination of both polyphonic and harmonic texture. The formal aspects of these two works are highly tied to tone structure, and tempo and meter with each piece being divided into three sections, but in differing evolution-ABC for Consortium I and ABA' for And the mountains rising nowhere. The aspect of tone structure demonstrates the largest difference between his earlier and later styles. The serial Consortium I consists of pitch-class sets that form six distinguishing aggregates. And the mountains rising nowhere, in contrast, emphasizes pitch center, through the repetition of eight motives focusing on the notes B and Ab; the tone structure of these eight motives pitch class sets formed through diatonic and octatonic collections. The two pieces have a connection through elements of sudden tempo and meter changes and having ametric sections through the expression of metric absence and indeterminate rhythm. The aspect of original orchestration and notation are features which connect Consortium I and And the mountains rising nowhere. The most notable of his timbral connection is his use of the technique called shared melody. Consortium I’s chamber ensemble is expanded to wind ensemble for And the mountains rising nowhere, leading to the greater use of unique orchestral color combinations. There is also an apparent evolution in Schwantner’s notation with his attempts at graphic notation from Consortium I, which is further developed in open scoring for And the mountains rising nowhere. With this analysis, this thesis discovers important features of Joseph Schwantner's music through the comparative study of Consortium I and And the mountains rising nowhere. As these works come from contrasting stylistic periods of his career, this study exposes differing compositional techniques. This discussion includes both the contrasts and connections of texture and form, tempo and meter, and orchestration and notation. Beyond contrasting his early pre-1977 Serial style with his later post-1977 Neo-Romantic style, these works show both the originality and evolution of a major American composer.
