Abstract
Human societies have changed its course drastically with technological developments and the rise of capitalist economy that lead to the rise of civilization and urbanization. Today people live their everyday lives in urban civilization. The changes in the urban civilization have greatly influenced people’s lives and the changes in an individual life and values have in return influenced the urban civilization. Despite the unceasing changes that drive the world, there is one thing that people have collectively tried to achieve; the idea of utopia, a form of hope, or impetus, which helps individuals to live their lives positively despite the repetitive nature of daily life and artificial nature of human civilization. Utopia is a fictional concept of ideal nation or a society that is used as an implication to criticize the imperfectness in the real world. Many utopian ideas in fictional work, including that of Thomas More, have indirectly incited changes. In other words, utopia is used as a mirror to reflect the real world and to expose its defects. In the 20thcentury, the idea of utopia has overcome the fictional setting and encompassed all the elements of personal definition of perfect society and has become a general idea of an ideal society. With the societal changes the definition of utopia is no longer unattainable society but is though as reachable reality that relates to the sense of ‘here and now’; it now embodies the human lust for the perfect society. Ernst Bloch argued that utopia is used to demolish the establish system by affecting it directly and liberating individuals from ‘here and now’ through providing dynamic energy. The utopian essence lies in hope and utopia can be seen as content for humanly hope for better life and any attempt to achieve that life. However because the idea of utopia is fictitious and only conceptual, when applied to practical problems it has limitations. In this paper I will approach and supplement the limitations that utopia has using the concept of Michael Foucault’s heterotopia. Heterotopia refers to a space that has more than one layer that relates to each other in a way that makes it impossible to define a mutual area, defining it as a space of possibilities that embraces changes and alterations that may occur. Foucault’s idea of heterotopia therefore, is more applicable to people of today. Utopia can liberate one from his/her inner state and acts as a source of positive energy derived from hope. However it cannot be universally unified, and will coexist in a complex, individual form according to each and everyone’s daily life. The idea of utopia may seem to exist in conceptual form separated from the real world. Yet it is a latent force that is hidden in an individual’s everyday life. Therefore it should be continuously excavated and identified. I will call the point of contact, ‘the unusual gap.’ The unusual gap that breaks the established daily order enables otherness to take place. Gilles Deleuze stated that in the process our daily life creates difference from sameness and the repetition gives meaning to life and can establish positive lifestyle. Deleuze states that we are made award of the diversity, inherence and potential through difference and repetition. When the potential is identified and activated we can make new discoveries and thorough discoveries we can evoke utopia. I use natural surrounding as the base for my work. A natural space has a dual aspect, one as a familiar area to the majority and as a space for ‘the unusual gap’ to take place. Natural spaces in urban surroundings are familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time because today’s urban space is artificial in itself. I capture images using black and white monochrome photograph because it can bring out such subconscious elements in a different light. An image of lonely nature embodies unusual context. And as a way to underline the idea of possibility or unusualness I used things that are used in an unintended ways, such as bleaching, sprinkling paints, putting stickers, making holes. Each technique is added to monochromatic background to compose image. Daily life is the beginning of every cause. Thus discovery of utopia is achieved through making efforts to lead a better life through identification of personal ideals and facing the realities. Through the process we can build positive attitude towards individual life and the relationship between individual and the society.;기술의 발달과 자본주의를 중심으로 도시화와 문명화가 이루어지면서 인간사회는 삶의 방식에서 많은 변화를 겪었다.
