Abstract
The necessity of ‘strengthening curriculum connectivity' has always been discussed in researches on the educational curriculum. At this point, it is necessary to discuss how educational curriculum subjects are organized and classified and what the general standards and principles are, by focusing on 'connectivity-between-subjects organization', since the educational curriculum newly set for high schools is an elective curriculum in the 2009 revised curriculum design. Based on this awareness of problems, this study aims to review the hierarchy and relevance between subjects based on the subject-specific curriculum and analyze the general standards and patterns in classifying subjects as part of efforts to improve connectivity between subjects. To this end, this study has set the following research questions. First, what are the characteristics of subject classification - Korean language, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science - in high schools depending on the curriculum period? Second, what are the general patterns and characteristics of subject classification according to Tyler's principle of curriculum organization? To explore such research problems, we considered period-specific high school curriculum documents, summarized the characteristics of subject classification, analyzed the relationship between subjects, and finally, based on these, drew the general patterns of subject classification. In this process, we used Tyler's principle of curriculum organization largely considered in terms of curriculum connectivity as the standard of analysis of the characteristics of subject classification in this study. In this respect, our research findings are as follows: First of all, as the result obtained from the first research question, the characteristics of subject classification can be summed up as follows centering on the horizontal connectivity and longitudinal connectivity. First, in Korean language curriculum, there is a comprehensive subject(Korean language) that embraces all content areas presented by Korean education, and if this subject is divided into ‘Ⅰ and Ⅱ,’ the relation takes an intensified form of same contents or an added form of new learning contents. Sometimes content areas are differentiated into one or two subject(s) and then develop into one independent subject, and other times the existing-divided two subjects are combined into one subject. In addition, there is also a subject that is differentiated in terms of content elements or materials. As the subjects that are differentiated in terms of content areas and then develop into one independent subject contain more intensified and developed contents than the subjects that combine content areas, they are hierarchical each other, but each differentiated independent subject is in a parallel relationship regardless of the hierarchy in contents. Second, with respect to the characteristics appearing in the curriculum of English department, English emphasizes on the integrated education of four(4) language functions in the nature of language use. This is why English department is opening integrated subjects as the subjects that have the highest difficulty unlike the other subjects differentiated as its learning difficulty gets more intensified. The integrated subjects embracing all content areas play a role as a prerequisite subject for other elective subjects and indicated as ‘Ⅰ or Ⅱ’ to represent that the same contents are intensified. In addition, the title of subject is indicated as 'practical' or 'intensified' depending on whether you focus on practical learning of English or whether you focus on academic learning of English. The integrated subjects that had differentiated content areas are mutually independent regardless of the level of contents because they deal with different areas. This is why they are in a parallel relationship. The English department opens basic-level subjects as the basic process that can compensate for learning deficits. Third, the Mathematics department also has integrated subjects that cover several areas constituting mathematics. However, mathematics don't have subjects integrating all areas in the nature of this subject that is hierarchically clear in the level of contents. In other words, as the stage of learning gets more intensified, children tend to learn new areas based on the mathematical ability accumulated in the previous stage. Accordingly, subject title of ‘Ⅰ or Ⅱ’ is used for classifying prerequisite subject from subsequent learning subject. This means an addition of new learning contents that intensified the level of contents rather than intensifying the same contents. The subjects in Mathematics department have clear hierarchy between subjects. This is why the prerequisite subjects are obvious. This influences the order of completing subjects. Like in English department, basic-level subjects are open as the basic process that can compensate for the learning deficits in common educational curriculum. Fourth, to sum up the characteristics of the educational curriculum of social studies, social studies are largely divided into ‘general sociology, history, and geography.’ Each area has detailed sub-areas to constitute this subject. This is why this curriculum has a more number of subjects than any other subjects. Sometimes titles are changed and other times various elective subjects are organized because this curriculum is differentiated depending on the scope of subjects or contents or the unit of exploration despite the same lineage that comes out from the common area. Content areas constituting the social studies are integrated into one subject. And this integrated subject enables students to learn about basic concepts to be well-equipped to foster social knowledge and is characteristic of prerequisite subjects for the later-intensified elective subjects. And the subjects differentiated from this area are in a parallel relationship regardless of the hierarchy in the level of contents because they are mutually independent due to different content areas to be dealt with. Fifth, to look at the characteristics appeared in the curriculum of science, science has the simplest organization of subjects, compared to other subjects, and uses the titles of science such as 'physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science' which are content areas constituting science. This is why the subject that integrate all content areas is designated as ‘science’ and the differentiated content areas are ‘physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science.’ The integrated subjects are prerequisite subjects introducing basic concepts from the four(4) areas. Generally, students complete these four areas and then select independent subjects intensified by area. In the department of science, subjects are differentiated as the stage gets higher and the difficulty of contents gets higher. And to differentiate the level, the subject name is indicated as 'I or II' if they use the same subject name although the level of contents is different. Each elective subject differentiated from the integrated area is independent each other without hierarchy in the difficulty of contents. This is why they are in a parallel relationship. From these characteristics shown in the subject classification above, we could draw the results from the second research question. When we looked at the curriculum by revised period of each subject, it was found that Tyler's principle of ‘continuity, sequence, and integrity’ was applied between subjects, which suggested that there was connectivity among them. Accordingly, we can classify the patterns of subject classification in terms of connectivity. First, the subject classification depends on 'integration and differentiation of content areas' in terms of horizontal connectivity. According to this classification criterium, it can be departmentalized into 'integration of entire areas' meaning that all content areas constituting a subject are contained in one subject, 'partial and selective integration' meaning that some areas are combined depending on the similarity of contents or effectiveness of learning, 'differentiation into a single area' meaning that one single area is departmentalized to create one subject, and 'differentiation of multiple areas' meaning that more than two content areas are separated to create one subject. Second, the subject classification depends on 'hierarchy of contents' in terms of longitudinal connectivity. According to this classification criterium, it can be departmentalized into sub-categories such as 'presentation of different levels of common contents' meaning that the level of same contents is intensified and presented, 'classification of prerequisite subjects from subsequent learning subjects' meaning that based on prerequisite subjects, new contents are added and then subsequent learning occurs, 'classification by independent relationship between the areas' that are in a parallel relationship without hierarchy between subjects due to different content areas, and 'selection of basic subjects' that connects common educational curriculum and elective education curriculum for the purpose of compensating for the learning deficits. Based on the research findings above, we have the following discussions and suggestions for the improvement issues to strengthen the connectivity of subject organization. The first thing is the subject classification by the principle of integrity. The pattern of ‘integration and differentiation of content areas’ has to have the logic to the criteria of ‘integration’ and ‘differentiation’ and after being integrated, should have combination and harmony between areas. And in terms of subject differentiation, connectivity with the previous integrated subjects should be taken into account. Second, it is necessary to develop general criteria and principle of 'intensification of contents' if subjects are organized depending on the hierarchy of contents by subject and the principle of continuity and sequence are applied between subjects. Third, as the discussion closely related to the necessity of this study, consistent logic or principle or perspective should be set to open a subject through in-depth discussion process in order to revise educational curriculum. By doing so, such issues other than the quality of learning experience in students should not affect the subject classification. Fourth, it is necessary to have a complementary research to seek for cooperation work with adjacent subjects when developing subjects or applicability with other subjects. Fifth, it is necessary to present the organization principle and criteria of various subjects opened by each subject in the educational curriculum documents at a national level and develop detailed guidance materials so that students can understand the characteristics and contents of various subjects when they select subjects.
