Abstract
Edvard Grieg, He is one of the most prominent Northern European composers, was a Norwegian composer who was deeply influenced by Romantic music. He incorporated nationalism in it and developed it further by emphasizing lyricism based on nature. He frequently adopted traditional folklore style, which clearly shows nationalism. Violin Sonata No.3, Op.45 also reveals the aspects mentioned above. It has three movements that shows the balance and harmony of the violin and the piano since the two instruments keep imitating each other’s melody. The piece is one of the most famous works of Grieg’s for combining the traditional and folkloric nature and late Romanticism together. Also, it has three motives which are from traditional melodies. The first movement is in a sonata form, which freely shows the composition of major and minor. This modulation between major and minor was a popular technique in the works of late Romantic composers. The second movement takes a form of A-B-A. Lyrical part A in its Romanza style, is contrasted with part B which shows a Norwegian dance rhythm. The finale is in A-B-A’-B’-Coda in a sonata form. It does not show a clear development of the theme as the first movement does. The short motive of folkloric melody keeps repeating itself in modulated and expanded ways. It ends with a short coda. Grieg’s Violin Sonata No.3, Op.45 is written in late 19th Romantic period musical style. Each movement has its own motive, which changes, expands, and develops in all parts of the piece. Its simple structure, contrasting phrase, melody development and harmonic construction are balanced well through symmetry and contrast. Also, the Norwegian folkloric melody and rhythm keep appearing in all movements, which shows the color and nature of nationalism. As a conclusion, Violin Sonata No.3, Op.45 is one of the most well-known and well-received works of Grieg for its Romanticism blended with distinct Norwegian nationalism.
