Abstract
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful and cosmic scale explo-sions in the universe, emitting all types of electromagnetic radiations and par-ticles only for a few tens of seconds. Despite of remarkable progress since 1990s in the study of GRBs, e.g. precise and fast localization of GRBs and observations of multi-band prompt emission and afterglows since 1990s, many questions remain unanswered, i.e. the origin of GRBs, burst mechanism, and potential tool for early universe probe. Due to the present limitation in response time, i.e. slewing time of satellites and ground telescopes, only handful events of early UV/optical measurements are available up to now. This gives rise to an urgent necessity for a new and faster response instrument capable of early or prompt UV/optical/IR photon measurements immediately after the localization of GRBs given by X-ray observations. To explore a new time domain of GRBs in UV/optical/IR bands, the Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) project has been proposed since 2009. As the first step for the realization and proof of the UFFO concept (fast slewing to GRB, fast localization of GRB, and utilizing small satellite), the payload of UFFO-pathfinder packed in 20 kg of total mass has been built and to be launched aboard Lomonosov satellite in 2013. There are two instruments installed in UFFO-pathfinder. One is Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT), newly introduced as a key telescope of UFFO for UV/optical observations. The other is UFFO Burst Alert & Trigger Telescope (UBAT) for GRB trigger and localization through X-ray measurements. On localizing GRB by UBAT, SMT of UFFO-pathfinder is designed to point at the GRB less than 1 second over its entire field of view (FOV) of 70 x 70 deg2. Such an extraordinary rapid response capability of SMT will provide observation of UV/optical light curves nearly simultaneously with X-rays. The SMT of UFFO-pathfinder was built with 10 cm aperture Ritchey-Chrétien telescope with 4.3 arcsec resolution and a 2-axis gimbal stage. It turned out from laboratory tests to point the source in 1.5~1.8 seconds with 2 arcmin pointing accuracy over the FOV of ±35 deg2. The accuracy of pixel resolution of SMT was measured to be 4.3 arcsec, similar to Swift. The sensitivity of SMT was estimated to be 19 magnitude at signal (GRB) to noise (diffused background) ratio of 8 sigma for 100 seconds exposure time, that is lower than Swift by 3 orders of magnitude. We developed all mechanics well within limited volume and mass budget while keeping the stiffness. The SMT met the requirement from Lomonosov satellite in SMT’s mass and volume that was incredibly tight, i.e. 10 kg and 65 (l) × 32 (w) × 20 (h) cm3, respectively by passing a series of space qualification tests including shock and vibration at Taiwanese and Russian space agencies. The SMT of UFFO-pathfinder foresees the detection of about 10~20 UV/optical light curves of GRBs with unprecedented early time captures, i.e. onset of UV/optical from GBRs. I made a key role in realization of SMT concept for the first time by build-ing the SMT instrument successfully for UFFO-pathfinder. This thesis describes details of the design, construction and final performance test of the SMT; the integration of SMT to UFFO-pathfinder and its space qualification tests final end-to-end SMT performance validation, UFFO-pathfinder integration to the Lomonosov spacecraft and the payload acceptance test in Russia, all that I took in charge of. I also present my study on astrophysical importance and prospects associated with such a rapid response for early photons observation that is only plausible by our SMT.
