Abstract
While everything quickly changes and progresses, historic events in the past and many existences within such events have been neglected by people of the present. Various events that occurred in the last 2 years, including historic incidents of Korea, such as Cheonan sinking incident and Yeonpyeongdo Island bombardment, as well as cruel accidents in Japan like earthquake, tsunami and radiation leak, resulted in many victims. Those who survived from these scenes are living aside from reality, continuously reiterating their memory about the events. At the time of each event, the event was quickly broadcasted through various media and attracted global attention with helping hands. After about 2 years, how do we recall such events now? Many people sympathized with the fear of the black ocean and flames experienced by victims at the time, sharing their grief, consoling, and cherishing them. However, many mortifying deaths and lives of those who departed their beloved families and friends have gone out of our attention. They are bound to time and space of the events, repeating the experience over and over. Various social problems and events have been actively discussed in the field of arts. Rather than focusing on aesthetic subjects of pure arts, artists are actively engaged in providing directions for proper consideration of social problems, events, and values that are being neglected or alienated. The researcher of this study wishes to reflect social remembrance of the past events and forgotten beings on works of this study based on such characteristics of art and the researcher's vision. The works will remind viewers about important things that must not be forgotten and convey pains of victims to be shared by human beings. This study intends to give a small condolence to those who need to recover from the tragic experiences. As theoretical approach of this study, the basis was built upon 'Collective Memory' by Morris Halbwachs (1925). Different mechanisms were used to examine the past memories, paying attention to the historic events that occurred in the past 2 years. Furthermore, by investigating social memories on literature, arts and films, the meaning and value of arts that suggest solutions for social problems were verified. After examining works that used stones and monuments, which are the main motifs in thematic expression of this study, formative works that materialize realistic reproduction through various materials and techniques were studied with works using threads and needles. This study also look for subjects, materials and techniques, which effectively express the topics. Eight works of this study focus on drawing sympathy of viewers about the events and figures engaged by delivering pains experienced by victims. Light weighted stones were made by using light styrofoam and light clay. Unrealistic objet was materialized by adding realistic expressions. In addition, it was possible to express the subject more effectively in various aspects by using delicate materials like threads and needles. In this study, the researcher hopes the individuals to take solidarity and responsibility for recovering social remembrance and records of the sacrifices and deaths of many people during the tragic events, such as Cheonan sinking incident, Yeonpyeongdo Island bombardment, and Japan earthquake. The researcher also intends to share and cure the pains of the victims by creating the art works of monuments. Breaking away from the existing roles and religious characters of monumental structures in the past, this study is anticipated to connect and share the forgotten events in history with people who live the present moment, and lead people to correctly remember the historic incidents.
