뮤지컬 애니 의 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

Musicals are a composite stage art harmoniously combining multiple art genres such as music, dance and fine arts. Albeit their relatively short history, musicals have rapidly expanded worldwide by satisfying popular cultural needs. They have affected other genres and contributed to the growth of related industries such as movie, recording, character, stage setting and lightning. This paper studies the musical Annie based on its 17 songs from the Original Broadway Cast recording and analyzes the flows of all pieces of music and their effects on the musical by investigating their tonality, harmony, instruments and main melodies. The focus of this paper is on determining the relationship between the music and the story. The musical Annie is staged all around the world even after 30 years from its first performance in 1976. Its theme is 'hope', which is cherished not only by Annie(main character), but also by Warbucks, Miss Hannigan and her brother, Rooster. In addition, the hope in this story is the desire of the general public, who are leaving the painful Great Depression behind and dreaming a new world. This arouses sympathy and inspires new hope among audiences. The music styles of the musical Annie identified in this paper are following: First, changes in vocal tones and composition of musical instruments for each character make the story more vivid. In 'overture', trumpet and trombone solos that sound as if they are talking to each other tell the main character Annie's loneliness and her sense of emptiness. Mute on brass instruments and glissando describe humorous aspects of Miss Hannigan and Rooster. Second, diverse situations and feelings are expressed in sequences, under which happy feelings are enumerated or desperate situations and anxiety are maximized. Third, the use of music genres matching to each scene helps to reveal characters' wide range of mental states and make the story more realistic. For example, the theme for Miss Hannigan is mostly 'show stopper' and employs swing rhythm, while Annie's songs expressing optimistic and warm atmospheres are based on tranquil ballads. Fourth, rhyming lyrics result in a clearer delivery of lyrics and create rhyme and coherence. Fifth, melody repetition highlights lyrics and escalates the characters' feelings to the utmost point. 'Tomorrow' depicts Annie's desire to overcome her difficult situations and move forward more confidently, while 'Something Was Missing' shows Warbuck's pity for Annie. Sixth, the structure of pop songs, A(impressive presentation of a theme)-A(repeat)-B(contrast with a new theme)-A(return to the theme), is frequently used, letting audiences feel the musical's songs easy and familiar.;뮤지컬은 음악, 무용, 미술 등 다양한 예술 장르가 조화를 이루어 만들어 진 종합 무대 예술이다. 대중들의 문화적인 욕구를 충족시킴으로써 전 세계적으로 빠르게 성장해 나갔으며, 다른 예술 장르에도 영향을 끼쳐 영화, 음반, 캐릭터, 무대장치, 조명 등 관련 산업의 발전에도 이바지해 왔다. 본 논문에서는 찰스 스트로우스(Charles Strouse)가 작곡한「애니」를 연구대상으로 하여 1997년 오리지널 브로드웨이 캐스팅으로 제작된 OST 음반의 17곡을 기준으로 분석하였다. 뮤지컬 전곡의 조성, 화성, 악기, 주요 멜로디 등을 분석해 전체적인 음악의 흐름을 연구하고 작품 전체에 미치는 영향과 내용과 음악의 상관관계를 중점적으로 연구하고자 하였다. 뮤지컬「애니」는 1976년 첫 공연을 시작한 지 30여 년이 지난 지금도 세계 곳곳에서 공연되고 있는 작품이다. 주제는 ‘희망’인데, 주인공 애니의 희망뿐만이 아닌 워벅스와 해니건 남매의 희망, 경제 공황의 시기에 힘든 과거를 뒤로하고 새로운 세상을 꿈꾸는 많은 사람들의 희망을 주제로 하고 있다. 이러한 모습은 관객들로 하여금 공감하게 하고 또 다른 희망을 갖게 한다. 「애니」의 음악 분석을 통해 알아본 뮤지컬 음악 스타일은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 캐릭터에 따른 목소리 톤과 악기 구성의 변화로 극 전체에 생동감을 준다. “서곡”에서는 서로 대화하듯이 등장하는 트럼펫과 트럼본의 솔로를 통해 주인공 ‘애니’의 쓸쓸하고 공허한 내면을 표현했으며, 금관악기의 뮤트(Mute)사용과 글리산도(Glissando)를 통해 해니건 남매의 유머 스러운 모습을 표현하고 있다. 둘째, 동형진행(Sequence)을 통해 다양한 상황과 감정을 표현하고 있는데, 행복한 감정이 열거되기도 하고, 절망적 상황과 불안함이 극대화되기도 한다. 셋째, 장면에 어울리는 음악 장르의 사용으로 등장인물들의 다양한 심리를 표현하고 생동감 있게 극의 분위기를 이끌어 갔다. 예를 들어 해니건의 테마는 대부분이 ‘쇼 스타퍼’인데 스윙 리듬이 사용되어 재미를 더해주고, 밝고 따뜻한 느낌을 표현하는 애니의 노래는 잔잔한 발라드로 구성 되어 있다. 넷째, 가사의 라임(rhyme)을 사용해 가사 전달을 용이하게 하며, 운율 감과 통일감을 준다. 다섯째, 반복적인 동기를 통해 가사를 강조하고 등장인물들의 감정을 고조 시킨다. 예를 들어 “투모로우”에서는 어려운 환경을 이겨내고 더욱 힘차게 앞으로 나가려는 애니 의 심리를 표현했고, “뭔가 허전했어”에서는 애니를 안타까워하는 워벅스의 심정이 나타나고 있다. 여섯째, 대중가요 형식인 A-A‘-B-A’의 형식이 많이 사용되어 대중들에게 좀 더 쉽고 친근하게 다가가게 한다.
