미술 자료 전산화에 있어서의 표준화

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to study the standardization methods for art institutions to manage and utilize digitally stored art collections. I attempted to recommend the better alternative method for standardization by reviewing the standardization processes at various advanced art institutions in North America and studying compatibility issues that arise during the digitalization process. The art collections, which are critical for art study, are digitally processed using various methods and being offered to the users. Especially, various observations during digitalization process indicate that standardization is critical for flexible data management and effective digitization of the art collections. The art institutions in North America are improving the search functionality by building database of art collections and making common index and data registry procedure to facilitate the data sharing among the institutions. Such standardization cases suggest that standardizing the language categories and word indexes will reduce the efforts of each institution through common standard. From early 1990s, the institutions in North America have been used the common image category and common word index for data standardization. Canadian government drives an initiative for integration to facilitate compatibility among the institutions. Meanwhile, the standardization is approached in various ways mainly in North America. While museums and academic institutions developed internal standard for digital art collections, research institutes are preparing the integrated digitalization approaches using dominant standard. As a result, the institutions which use its own standards, are limited in data exchange with other institutions showing poor integration between image and text information, and require co-work between art institutions. To solve such problems, the standardization for sharing art information should be implemented. Standardization for data, procedure, and type is required for data sharing. Search method, which provides various accesses to the image, should be studied and the foundation for sharing image should be prepared through preparing standard for image and co-works between institutions. Before each institution implement the digitalization of art collections, the discussion on effective usage of standard should be made among various stakeholders such as the institutions and academy. This thesis, as a part of those discussions, reviewed the problems in digitalizing works in North America and suggests the directions for the standardization of art collections.

;본 논문은 정보화 시대에서 미술 기관들이 미술 자료를 과학적으로 관리하고 효율적으로 활용하기 위한 표준화 방법을 모색하기 위해 시작되었다. 필자는 미술관 전산화에서 선도적인 역할을 하고 있는 북미지역의 미술 기관을 중심으로 표준화 과정에서 나타나는 표준 정립과 상호 호환성의 필요성을 지적하면서 표준화와 관련된 보다 효과적인 대안을 제시하고자 하였다. 미술 연구의 중요한 토대가 되는 미술 자료는 정보화 시대에 그 매체적인 특성에 따라서 여러 가지 방식으로 전산화 되어 다양한 계층의 이용자들에게 제공되고 있다. 특히 미술 자료의 전산화 과정에서 나타나는 다양한 특징들은 융통성 있는 자료의 관리와 함께 미술 자료를 효율적으로 기록하고 전산화하기 위한 표준화가 실행되어야 하는 점을 보여준다. 북미지역의 미술 기관들은 미술 자료의 데이터베이스를 구축하여 이용자 검색 기능을 강화시키고 있으며, 미술관과 연구 기관들을 중심으로 미술품 목록의 표준과 정보 기록에 관한 절차 등에 관심을 가지고 자료의 공유와 국제적인 규약이나 표준을 마련하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이러한 미술 자료 전산화를 위한 표준의 사례들은 일관적인 기준과 용어의 정립을 위해서 다양한 용어 분류의 표준이나 언어사전으로 개별 기관에서의 목록화 노력을 줄이고, 여러 시스템에 적용될 수 있는 표준을 제시하고 있다. 1990년대 초반 부터 중점적으로 만들어진 북미지역의 표준들은 주요 미술관을 중심으로 이미지 자료의 분류와 데이터의 표준을 위한 용어집 제작 등과 같은 방식으로 이루어지고 있으며, 캐나다의 경우에는 국가적인 주도 하에서 통합적으로 시행되고 있기 때문에 기관들 간에 상호 호환성을 용이하게 하고 있다. 이러한 가운데, 북미 지역의 기관을 중심으로 한 미술 자료 전산화에 있어서 표준화는 매우 다양한 방식으로 시행되고 있다. 주로 미술관과 학교에서의 미술 자료 전산화의 표준들은 각 미술관의 내부적인 기준으로 만들어지고 적용되고 있으며, 연구 기관에서는 주로 권위 있는 표준들을 사용하여 네트워크를 이용한 미술 자료의 공유와 같은 통합적인 전산화 방안을 마련하고 있다. 즉 자체적인 표준을 만들어서 사용하고 있는 미술관들은 기관 사이에서의 정보 교환과 같은 상호 호환성에 제약이 따르고 있으며, 또한 이미지와 텍스트 자료 사이의 통합적인 연관성이 부족하고, 이미지 사용에서도 일관적인 표준화 등이 필요한 실정이며, 각 미술 기관 사이의 상호적인 협력의 필요성이 요구된다고 볼 수 있다. 이와 같은 문제점들을 해결하기 위해서는 미술 자료의 공유를 위한 표준화가 이루어져야 한다. 즉 정보 교환의 호환성을 위해서는 데이터, 절차, 그리고 형태 상의 표준화가 필요하다. 또한 이미지 검색에 있어서 다양하게 접근할 수 있는 검색 방식이 지속적으로 연구되어야 하며, 이미지에 관한 표준의 마련과 관련 기관들 사이의 연계 등과 같은 방법으로 이미지와 관련 자료를 공유할 수 있는 토대를 마련하여야 한다. 정보화 시대에서 미술 자료 전산화를 위한 표준화는 이를 기관별로 시행하기 이전에 미술 기관, 미술 자료 담당자, 교수 등 여러 분야의 협력적인 연구를 통하여 효과적인 표준 사용을 위한 논의가 이루어져야 한다. 본 논문은 이러한 논의의 일환으로 북미지역의 미술 자료 전산화 현황의 문제점을 살펴보고 정보화 시대의 미술 자료 표준화에 대한 가능성과 방향을 제시한다는 점에서 그 의의를 살펴볼 수 있다.
