Abstract
;Georg Friedrich Ha¨ndel (1685-1759) is a composer representing the Baroque age together with J. S. Bach and establishing the tradition of England's His works features the Italian freshness and the French splendor, while encompassing the various characteristics of musical modes of many countries including Germany and the United Kingdom. His works were matured in the United Kingdom where international musical modes could well be developed at that time. Ha¨ndel composed some 20 oratorios, among which "Messiah" must be his model work whereby his fame as oratorios composer could be firmly established. The script of "Messiah" was extracted form the Old New Testament unlike other oratorios, it has no specific characters or special story. "Messiah" which depicts Jesus Christ consists 53 pieces beginning with a French overture, through recitativo and aria to ritornello. Among them the chorus parts are dramatic and show substantial harmony to make this an important work of choral. "Messiah"'s first part sounds bright and gentle, its second part has a dramatic tension and religious impression, and its third part renders a tranquil mood reminiscent of a resurrected life. The denouement draws down its curtain with a bugle note heralding the resurrection, and with a great amen. This study reviews definitions, origin development of the oratorio and oratorio thereupon, discusses the classification, characteristics and development of Ha¨ndel's oratorios.
