'기억'

Abstract

본인의 작업은 인간이 끊임없이 '과거의 존재들'이 된다는 데에서 출발한다. 시간에 대해 우리가 말할 수 있는 유일한 사실은 단지, 그것이 '지나갔다'라는 것뿐이다. 과거 저편엔 무언가의 시작을 담아둔 '제로'라는 기준점이 있다. 본인은 '미래'라는 불투명한 무한대를 탐구하는 대신, 보다 분명한 제로(zero)지점을 향한 '과거의 범위'로부터 사유를 정리해 나간다. 본인은 예술작업이란 자기성찰을 통한 세계와의 대화라고 생각한다. 결과적으로 예술은 세상과의 소통을 전제하며, 시간을 담아내는 열린 공간이기 때문이다. 본 연구는 본인을 둘러싸고 있는 '세상'과, 세상을 포함하는 '우주'의 두 중심축을 탐구하여 인간 존재의 근본적인 위치를 읽음으로써 보다 진지한 작가와 작품, 그리고 관객 사이의 내·외적 교류를 이룸에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 먼저 '0'과 '1'이라는 단 두 가지의 기호만으로 세상 곳곳에서 일어나는 사건들을 동시에 공유하고 소통할 수 있는 현대의 인터넷 시스템 중심을 본인은 '수'(數)에서 찾았다. 그리고 기계문명 뿐 아니라 원시부족까지 모두 포함하는 광범위한 세계의 범위로서의 '우주'의 중심이 되는 기준을 '시간'이라 보았다. 삶을 영위하는 모든 물질들은 '시간의 지속'으로부터 벗어날 수 없기 때문이다. 시간은 한 개인의 죽음으로 단절되거나 휴식하는 것이 아니라 태초부터 그저 끝없이 흐르고 있을 뿐이다. 흐르는 시간을 해석하는 방법은 다양할 수 있지만, 시간이 흐른다는 그 자체는 부정할 수 없는 절대 진리에 해당한다. 본인은 끝없이 뻗어나가는 '수직선'의 한 점인 임의의 '수'(數)를 통하여 '수의 존재'에 대해 의문을 제기하고, 그것을 멈춤이 없는 '시간' 개념에서의 '순간'에 빗대어 풀어나가고자 한다. 즉 본인이 살아가는 세상과 우주의 중심단위가 되는 '수'와 '시간'의 두 관계로부터 본인이 존재하는 위치를 짚어보고, 나아가 예술가의 존재를 대변하는 예술작품이 위치해야 할 방식을 탐구하고자 한다. 세상의 시스템 중심에는 '수(數)'가 있다. 그리고 이 시대의 안전과 신용은 '수'와 그것의 '연산'에 의존한다. 그런데 사실 아무것도 없는 '0'에서 순차적인 다음 단계를 세어나간다는 것은 불가능하다. 우리가 거의 무의식적으로 사용하고 있는 일련의 '수'들은 인공적인 하나의 이미지일 뿐, 어떻게 보면 출현이 불가능한 상상의 수, 상상의 세계이다. 가령 임의의 숫자 '1'을 생각해 볼 때 우리는 그것이 존재하게 되기까지의 합당한 과정을 증명할 수 없다. 숫자 '1'이 존재하기 위해 지나온, 바로 이전의 '수', 이를테면, 0.999999999 혹은 0.99999…를 어떻게 말하고 정의할 수 있는가. 이러한 의문은 결국 임의의 숫자 '1'의 존재를 포함한 모든 '수'의 존재 자체를 부정하게 만든다. 즉 숫자 '1'은 개별적으로 존재하기엔 너무나 짧고 모호하다. 그리고 시간의 최소 단위인 '순간' 역시 '수'의 불가능한 출현과 마찬가지로 어떠한 양의 부피를 갖지 않을뿐더러 명확히 존재하지 않는다. '순간'은 말하는 찰나에 이미 과거가 되어 버린다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 불가능한 존재의 임의의 '수'들은 수직선을 끝없이 연장시키며, 부피 없는 '순간'은 시간을 영원으로 지속시킨다. 따라서 '순간'은 무한의 과거를 잠재적으로 포함하고 있는 이른바, '누적된 개념'의 순간 아닌 순간을 의미한다. 수직선 위의 한 점 역시 제로(0)로부터 누적된, 잠재부피의 한 수로 존재한다. 따라서 무한히 뻗어나가는 수직선 위의 한 점인 '수'와, 지속되는 시간개념 안에서의 한 '순간'은 모두 개별적으로 존재하는 것이 불가능하다. 다만 자신을 포함한 '전체'와의 관계 속에서만 그 존재가 설명되어진다. '순간'들은 계속해서 과거로 쌓여간다. 그렇다면 우리는 대부분 과거에 위치하며, 우리의 모든 사유 역시 과거의 어떠한 경험으로부터 도출된다. 즉 우리는 '기억'과 '회상'을 통해 순간을 살아가는 것이다. 그러나 인간의 기억이란 그 범위를 한정지을 수도 없고 마음대로 제어할 수도 없다. 게다가 마음대로 꺼내어 쓸 수도 없는 매우 모호한 장치이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 경험된 시간의 인상들은 어느새 인간의 몸과 마음에 새겨진다. 본인은 '기억'이야말로 인간의 삶을 '누적된 부피'로서 증거한다고 보았다. 즉 인간이 가지는 '기억'들은 결코 개별적으로 독립될 수 없으며 끊임없이 세상과의 교류를 통해 시간을 덧붙여 그 부피를 더해가는 것이다. 따라서 각자의 '기억'들이 갖는 공통분모를 읽어낼 수 있다면 우리의 삶과 예술작품은 훨씬 빠르고 깊이 있게 세상과의 소통을 시도할 수 있을 것이다. 본인은 '예술'이 인간이 가지는 '기억'의 공통분모를 찾아서 그것의 속성을 파악하여 작업될 때 진정한 생명의 빛을 가지게 된다고 믿는다. 그렇게 될 때 예술은 시대와 장소와 인물을 초월한 경계 없는 소통의 가능성을 가질 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문을 통해 본인은 '수'와 '순간'이 지니는 잠재적 무한의 부피로부터 인간존재 역시 '누적된 부피'로서의 '과거의 존재들'임을 밝혀내고, 나아가 순간을 지속시키는 '기억'을 통한 인간의 삶을 관찰하고자 한다. 그리고 끊임없는 '순간'의 호출로 인하여 재구성되고 증가되는 '기억'을 통해 시간과 공간을 초월한 예술이 존재해야할 새로운 장(場)에 대해 고찰하고자 한다.;My work is initiated from the premise that the human being becomes a 'past existence'. Instead of exploring the opaque infinite future, I organize my thoughts from going towards the infinite zero. At least, there is a criterion zero over on that side of the past. The only thing we can say about time is that 'it is has flown(passed)'. And I think art means communication with the surrounding world through self reflection. Therefore my work starts out locating where the human being stands, and happens to be an attempt to explore the human being standing on the two axis of the self surrounding world, and the universe including the world. In this thesis I have questioned the existence of the 'number' as the unit of life, through the process of setting up the 'number' as a point on a line. I have interpreted the existence of such point through the notion of the 'moment' which is within the realm of endless time. Therefore I have explored the self existing location through the relation between the 'number' and 'time', led to the question of where art representing the artist should stand and how it should be. First, I chose the 'number' as the center of the internet system which is operated by the two symbolic figures of 0 and 1. Not only within the internet but also within the broad term of the universe including the earth, I have chosen 'time' as a central criterion. Time does not stop nor rest by a person's death, but has continued to flow from the beginning of the world. There may be various ways of interpreting time, but the fact that time flows is an absolute truth. 'Number' is located in the center of this world's system. Safety and reliability in this time of era relies on 'number' and 'operation'. However, it is impossible to count the next step after the number 0 which is nothing. The numbers we use unconsciously may just be an artificial image, an imaginary number that was impossible to appear, or an imaginary world itself. For example, if we think of a random number '1', we cannot prove the logical process of how it has become to exist. How can we explain 0.999999999, or 0.99999… as the number right before '1'? This doubtful point denies the existence of the 'number' itself including the existence of the random number '1'. In other words, the number '1' is too short and too vague to exist by itself. Also, the notion 'moment(instant)' as the smallest unit of time is alike as the impossible appearance of 'number', it doesn't have any volume nor does it clearly exists. In the moment we say "moment", it has already become a past. Nonetheless 'numbers' which are impossible to exist, do extend the line and the volumeless 'moment' of time to eternity. Therefore, a 'moment' is a notion temporarily containing the infinite past and being a moment which is not an 'accumulated notion'. A point on a line exists as a potential volume which has also been accumulated from 0 and exists as a 'number'. Therefore it is impossible for a 'number' existing as a point on a line and a 'moment' existing within the endless time, exist separately. This existence is explained only when the self is within the relation with the "whole". 'Moments' continue to accumulate in the past. Then we generally tend to be located in the past, and eventually our thoughts originate from the past also. That is to say we live on upon our memory and retrospection. However the human memory cannot be defined within a certain limit and cannot be controlled by our self will. It also is a very ambiguous operation that cannot be taken out and used whenever you want. Nonetheless, the experienced time and impressions are carved into the human's mind and body. I think it is through the "memory" which the human life is proved to be an accumulated volume. Individual memories cannot exist independently but are continuously accumulated with time through the communication with the world. Therefore if we read the common ground of each one's memory, then it will be easier for our lives and our art works to communicate better with the world. I think art truly comes alive when the human explores the commonness between each memory and discovers the true attributes of it. It will eventually lead to possibilities of a more extended communication transcending the era of time, location, and people. Through this thesis, I wanted to show that the human being is also an accumulated volume of 'past existences' through potential infinite volumes of the 'number' and 'moment', along exploring the persistent human life through the 'memory'. I hope that through the 'memory' which is recomposed and increased with continuous 'moments', I will be able to discover a location where art transcending time and space may stand.
