The present thesis intends to investigate a variety of aspects of colonialism and post-colonialism efforts by examining ː (1) a literary behavior as a reactions to the neo-colonial modernism, and (2) the description of acceptance, rebellion, domination and oppression as appeared in novels produced in the 1960s. The motivation of the current study stems from the fundamental question of "In what manner and based on which relationships was our society formed where is it ultimately headed?". Considering the fact that our present society is characterized by the capitalistic modernism, modernism is certainly the "premise for the reflection of comtemporary life". In political, social, and cultural aspects, the modernism of our present society began its formation in the 1960s, an era in which the Korean society started its progress into the capitalistic modernism, a then universal phenomenon. Form an international point of view, Korea holds its position as a border country of the Third World. Therefore, in order to investigate the contemporary culture of the Korean society, it is imperative to examine the 1960s in which post-colonialism efforts to confront the modernism of the West by means of focusing on its modern civilization. Although the 1960s came long after the demise of the territorial colonialism in Korea, invisible colonialism of capital and power had continued its existence all the while. As the industrial capitalism established its system in the post-Korean War era, the mechanism of economic development started forming itself as a new regulating authority, and individuals were called to become active elements of modernization. As a framework to approach the novels of the 60s, on Chapter 2, I will discuss the internalization of the aforementioned neo-colonial regulating authority, and its expression in literary works, most often as perception and reflection of modernism. Reflection on the world and self are also important principles of modern philosophy. Humans exist in a world full of other human being, thus their presence can only be affirmed by the existence of other individuals. Bearing this in mind, in Chapter 3, I will analyze which types of characters are centralized or decentralized in literary works and how their interpersonal relationships are formed and sustained. It will be noted that in each of the works analyzed, characters were grouped into several categories as follows ː first, those who accept modernization and adjust to the new social paradigm, second, those who are isolate from the modernization, third, those who do reluctantly mold into the modern world but with skepticism for the change, and finally those who are completely removed from the new logic of modernization. The central characters in the works by Kim Seung-Ok, for instance, show their compliance with the individuals who successfully accepted modernization and therefore deny their relationships with individual who failed in their adjustment of the modern society. The characters in Lee Chung-Joon's works, on the other hand, do attend to the aforementioned “failures" of the modern world but nevertheless keep distance or fail to achieve genuine communication with them. In a similar manner, the central characters of Park Tae-Soon attempt the assimilation with the individuals who successfully adjusted to the modernization and urbanization, however these attempts result at the end. Subsequently, these failed efforts are followed by another attempt to establish positive relationships with decentralized characters. In short, in Chapter 3, I will discuss the relationship between centralized and decentralized characters of different hierarchical positions and reveal the presence of colonial system within their interpersonal relationships. Each interpersonal relationship is intertwined with the issues of power and interest. Through the analyses of oppression and acceptance behavior of the characters of literary works under investigation, the power dynamics among individuals and their personal traits will be revealed, an observation which is highly related to their dichotomous positions toward modernization. The denial and oppression central characters demonstrated toward their decentralized counterparts in Kim Sueng-Ok's works, for instance, seem to be the consequence of a desire for modernized urban life and a simultaneously appearing inner conflict against it. On the other hand, Lee Chung-Joon's characters take an aloof observer's stance for those who failed to join the modern life, which signals a passive acceptance to the lost values rather than the acceptance of the reality. This stance is certainly based upon the denial of modernism, nevertheless Lee Chung-Joon never explicitly dispalys the characters' denial of modern society by revealing its negativism. Rather Lee chooses to reluctantly admit the reality as the inevitable. As for Park Tae-soon, his characters exert their effort to accept the contemporary society with a positive stance as shown by their desire to assimilate with modernized individuals. Their desire for modern and urban life after the initial failure to adjust to the novel society is later realized as their determination and effort to overcome their previous failure. In other words, the aforementioned characters consistently exert active efforts to overcome the tension and inner conflict lf the modern society which is characterized by complexity and multi-faceted desires. In an era of modernization which was forced upon with haste, the works under investigation in the present thesis provide serious contemplation on the social conflict of the 60s and its inhabitants who are isolated from the modernization. This contemplation and its subsequent discoveries enabled a reflection on a society in which modernization, an invisible form of colonialism, function as a regulatory authority, and the reaction of the human beings who lived through the 60s. The ruling classes lure the ruled into oppression and exploitation using modernization. However, the truth of colonialism is not a simplistic element as such but rather a two-faceted existence equipped with fissure and layers. The multi-faceted stance of the aforementioned characters toward the modern world can also be regarded as their rebelling strategy for the negative modernism. However, the behavior of perceiving assimilation as rebellion can be dangerous since it can be easily taken advantage of by the ruling class. If Kim Sueng-Ok's works have problems of conspiratorial post-colonialism, Park Tae-Soon's works show potential risk of representative and readvent. Lee Chung-Joon meanwhile, does succeed in engaging the reality with his creative dimension, but still lacks the utmost sense of reality. Living in a society where modernization continues, we need on-going reaction or strategies to deal with it. Although literature might not locate direct solutions for the acceptance of modernization, as a theoretical persepctive with which we observe the contemporary and human life, literature will certainly bring prosperity in our understanding of the world.
