성취기준별 실제적 자료를 활용한 읽기 활동 중심의 영어 읽기 지도 방안 연구

Abstract

The recent expansion in the use of Internet has presented more opportunities to read in English than before, so the necessity of English reading instruction has become prominent. Also, considering the importance of reading in enabling logical thinking and fluent communication, English reading needs to be emphasized and practiced to a great extent. Particularailly in middle school, when the study of English reading commences in earnest, guidance in improving reading skills by accessing authentic materials is needed. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of reading instruction using authentic materials on English reading skills and learning attitude by developing a teaching method that utilizes authentic materials, a medium in which middle school students have a keen interest and using it in classroom teaching. Also, the effective methods of applying this teaching method to the classroom will be sought. For this study, the experiment was conducted for eight weeks with 133 third-year middle school students. All the students were asked to participate in reading activities using authentic materials for achieving the Performance standard in reading course. The main results obtained from this study are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in assessment scores between the pre-test and post-test; the use of reading activities in English reading learning was found to be effective in improving reading skills. And especially lower level student's scores in the experiment group showed a marked improvement on assessment as compared to those in the higher level students. Second, English reading instruction using reading activities through authentic materials based on Performance Standard improved the student's attitude toward English reading and English learning especially in the aspects of interest and participation in classroom . In particular, higher level students indicated that reading activity using Internet Site was most enjoyable and effective, while lower level students indicated that 'finding main idea' activity using comic strips was most effective. Third, a survey conducted with the students, indicated that students gained interest and motivation through reading activities using authentic materials. In addition, the students suggested the reading activity using authentic materials can be more effective by applying them to the teaching other language skills. As the above study suggest, the use of reading activities through authentic materials in English reading instruction for middle school students is effective and productive in achieving the Performance Standard reading skills and attitude for English learning. However, for more effective utilization of reading activity in the classroom, the material for activity has to be provided to the linguistic ability and intellectual level of the students. Also, it is necessary that more programs be developed in specific fields to adapt English authentic materials into teaching materials. More systematic researches are required for selecting standards for reading materials and devising and modifying the authentic materials that are obtained to correspond to the goals and contents of the educational process. ;최근 인터넷 사용의 확산과 함께 영어 읽기 자료를 사용한 영어 읽기 기회가 점점 증가됨에 따라 영어 읽기 학습의 필요성은 수적이라고 할 수 있다. 유창하고 논리적인 사고와 풍부한 표현을 가능하게 해 주는 읽기의 중요성을 고려해 볼 때, 영어 읽기 교육은 학교 교육에서 더욱 강조되고 실천될 필요가 있다. 특히 중학교에서는 본격적인 읽기 학습을 시작하게 되므로, 영어 읽기에 대한 관심과 흥미를 유지시킬 수 있도록 실제 자료를 활용하여 읽기 능력이 향상되도록 이끌어주는 것이 필요하다고 본다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 중학교 3학년을 대상으로 단계별 읽기 영역 성취기준 달성을 목적으로 실제적 자료(authentic material)를 활용한 읽기 수업 방안을 제안하고 이를 교실 현장에 적용하고자 한다. 다양한 실제적 자료를 활용한 읽기 학습이 학습자의 영어 읽기 능력과 영어 학습 태도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알아보고, 향후 현장 적용 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이에 중학교 3학년 학습자 133명을 대상으로 읽기 영역 성취기준별 실제적 자료를 활용한 읽기 활동을 중심으로 수업을 8주간 실시하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학습자들의 읽기 평가 점수가 실험 전 보다 유의미하게 향상되어, 실제적 자료를 활용한 읽기 활동 중심의 영어 학습이 학습자들의 읽기 능력 향상에 효과적이었음을 알 수 있다. 특히 하위 수준의 학습자 경우 상위 집단에 비해 읽기 평가 점수가 크게 향상되어, 하위 수준의 학습자들에게 실제적 자료를 활용한 읽기 활동 중심의 수업이 매우 긍정적인 효과가 있다고 할 수 있다. 둘째, 학습자들의 영어 읽기 및 읽기 활동들에 대한 반응 및 태도를 설문 조사로 연구한 결과, 실제적 자료를 활용한 영어 읽기 수업이 학습자들의 학습에 대한 흥미, 그리고 수업 참여도를 높여주는 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 상·하위 수준별로 읽기 활동에 대한 흥미도와 성취기준의 달성 효과에 대해서 서로 다른 반응을 보여주었다. 학습자들은 읽기 자료의 내용이 실제 생활에서 일어날 수 있거나 학습자들과 관련성이 있을 때, 그리고 읽기 활동의 목표가 구체적으로 제시되었을 때 흥미와 관심을 보였다. 특히 상위수준의 학습자들은 인터넷 사이트를 이용한 활동이 가장 재미있고 효과적이라고 응답하였고, 그 반면에 하위집단 학습자들은 만화를 활용한 주제 찾기 활동이 가장 효과적이라고 응답하였다. 셋째, 사후 10명의 학습자들을 대상으로 이루어진 심화 설문 결과 학습자들은 실제적인 자료를 활용한 읽기 활동을 통하여 흥미와 동기를 얻었다고 응답하였다. 또한 읽기 활동에 다른 언어 기능들과 관련된 활동들이 첨가되었으면 좋겠다는 의견을 제시하였다. 이러한 연구 결과에서처럼 실제적 자료를 활용한 읽기 활동 중심의 영어 읽기 수업이 중학교 단계의 학습자들을 대상으로 이루어졌을 때 읽기 능력과 영어 읽기 학습에 긍정적인 효과가 나타난 것은 읽고 해석하기 위주의 읽기 수업을 보다 활성화시키는 데 실제적 자료와 이를 바탕으로 한 다양한 읽기 활동들이 유용한 매개체로 사용될 수 있음을 시사한다. 그러나 영어 읽기 수업에서 읽기 활동을 보다 효율적으로 활용하기 위해서는 읽기 활동 자료를 학습자의 언어 능력과 수준에 맞게 적절히 선택하고, 학습자의 흥미와 필요를 반영하는 관련성 있고, 실제적인 자료를 제공할 수 있는 교사의 노력이 필요할 것이다. 그리고 해당 교육과정의 성취목표가 제대로 달성될 수 있도록 보다 다양하고 창의적인 활동들을 개발하여야 할 것이다.
