이 실험에 사용된 2개의 polymethyl methacrylate는 Jet Tooth Shade(Lang Dental, Wheeling, Ill., USA)와 Alike(GC, Tokyo, Japan)였으며3개의 resin composites는 Protemp 3 Garant(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany)와 Luxatemp(DMG, Hamburg, Germany)와 Revotek LC(GC, Tokyo, Japan)였다. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the translucency differences of provisional resin materials at various thickness and to evaluate the correlation between the translucency and the masking efficiency. Material and methods. The materials investigated in this study were two polymethyl methacrylate resins: Jet Tooth Shade (Lang Dental, Wheeling, IL, USA) and Alike (GC, Tokyo, Japan); three resin composites: Protemp 3 Garant (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany), Luxatemp (DMG, Hamburg, Germany) and Revotek LC (GC, Tokyo, Japan). Specimens (n=6) were fabricated from each material in 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 mm thickness. The CIELAB parameters of each specimens were measured on white backing and black backing using a spectrophotometer. The translucency parameter (TP) values and the masking effect (△ME^(*)_(ab)) values were computed and all data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and the multiple comparisons Scheffe test at the significance level of 0.05. The correlation between the thickness and the TP values and the correlation between the thickness and the △ME^(*)_(ab) values were also evaluated by correlation analysis and regression analysis. Results. The TP values and the △ME^(*)_(ab) values were significantly related to the thickness in all specimens. The TP values were more sensitive to the change of thickness than the △ME^(*)_(ab) values. The correlation coefficients between the TP values and the △ME^(*)_(ab) values were near 1 regardless of the brand. The order of the translucency by brand was different from the order of the masking effect by brand in all thickness groups. Conclusion. Within the limitation of this study, the translucency and masking effect of the provisional resin materials investigated were significantly related to their thickness. The masking effect of provisional resin was correlated with the translucency parameter, but the order of the masking effect by brand was different from the order of the translucency parameter. Clinical significance. Translucency and masking effect of provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials is an important esthetic consideration. Based on the results of this study, all the materials investigated differ substantially in their ability to mask underlying colors except Alike and Luxatemp, so that the choice of the brand is a more convenient measure to mask underlying colors than the increase of thickness when the available thickness for the provisional restoration is limited. However, all the materials investigated could not mask black backings below the threshold of perceptible color difference (2 units of △E) in the thickness of less than 3mm.-
