Abstract
This thesis is to examine the influence of reproductive technology on women as a group. Firestone maintained that women could be liberated from maternity through use of a test tube baby creating system. Some feminists argued that this male controlled high technology could not make women free from child birth because it intensified male power over women's bodies. In this contestation this thesis is proposed to study the probable consequences of reproductive technology for women by analysing the infertile women's experiences in IVF & ET program. This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is to examine the social context in which IVF is implemented. The second part is to explore the male medical professional's control over women's fertility and reproductive capacities. The third one is to know whether the reproductive technologies are useful to women. Infertile women in Korea strongly internalized the familism Ideology and the ideology of motherhood which male dominated society forced women to accept. Infertile women recognized married women were responsible for reproducing their husband's genetic offsprings. They believed women were not fulfilled until they had given birth. When their infertility was revealed, infertile women were stigmatized as deviant and excluded from the social nexus of mothers and couples with children. Further they experienced big troubles in relation with in-laws because they couldn't succeed to husbands' blood ties. As a result of these external social pressures, they desperately tried to participate in IVF & ET program at infertility clinic. Medical management of infertility made wren dehumanized and losing control over their bodies. Medical professionals who exclusively had the advanced medical knowledge and technologies institutionalized the medical services for fulfilling their interests of monetary profits and status rewards. Medical profession in general restricted access to knowledge, so that women couldn't get the full information of IVF's high risks and low success rate. They treated infertile women as manipulatable matters or reproductive objects. Therefore infertile women's experiences in IVF were so alienated and exploitative. Medical professionals suggested IVF & ET program should be an attractive option for infertile women. Moreover they induced women to use it continuously despite its emotional, physical, and financial cost. The availability of such a technique was so small. Only relatively privileged and heterosexual women were able to make use of this technology. It is argued against IVF on the grounds that it tied women's reproduction to marriage alone, that its complicated and closed training program for professionals excluded women from administrating and controlling it, locking us all into a male-controlled high technology mode1 of birth. The possible consequences for women of technologies controlled by male dominated professions will be potentially negative. The techniques already in use on farm animals could result in what Dworkin and Corea called 'the reproductive brothel', a system in which only some women would be regarded as genetically fit to reproduce, which others would be used merely to gestate their offspring. It might even be possible in the future to bring pregnancies to term in artificial wombs, and thus do away with women altogether.
