Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the present attitudes of special teachers and regular teachers toward mainstreaming and handicapped students mainstreamed, and to identify any relationship that might exist between the attitudes toward mainstreaming of two teacher groups and several selected variables. For this purpose, 103 special teachers and 103 regular teachers were selected from public elementary schools in Seoul. The questionnaire used in this study was ATMS developed by Larrivee and Cook (1979). The sub-categories of ATMS consisted of (1)general philosophy of intergration (2)teacher expertise (3)demands of teachers' time (4)academic expectation, and (5)behavioral expectation. T-Test and Two-way ANOVA were used to analyze the collected data. The results obtained from this study are summerized as follows: 1. Significant differences were found between special teachers and regular teachers in attitudes toward mainstreaming and handicapped students mainstreamed, showing significantly more positive attitudes of special teachers than those of regular teachers. 2. In overall attitudes toward mainstreaming, no significant interaction effects were found between teacher variables ( gender, grade level, number of years experienced mainstreaming, percieved level of success in teaching special need children, availability of supportive services, usefulness of supportive services, ) and two teacher groups. However, main effects appeared in four variables presenting more positive attitudes in 1-3 grade teachers, the teacher groups with higher perception level of success, the teacher groups received more supportive services, and the teacher groups perceived the supportive services useful1y. Findings obtained by sub-categories in this study could be summerized as follows: 1) No significant interaction effects were found between teacher gender and two teacher groups on all sub-categories. On a sub-category of general philosophy of intergration, however, main effect was found for teacher gender, showing significantly more positive attitudes in female teachers than male teachers. 2) No significant interaction effects were found between grade level and two teacher groups on all sub-categories. On sub-categories of general philosophy of intergration, special teacher expertise, academic expectation, and behavioral expectation, however, main effects were found for grade level, presenting significantly more positive attitudes in the group of 1-3 grade teachers than 4-6 grade ones. 3) No significant. interaction effect was found between the number of years of experienced mainstreaming and two teacher groups on all sub-categories. Main effect was also not found on any sub-category, showing that no influence of mainstreaming experience on teachers' attitudes toward mainstreaming. 4) A significant interaction effect was found between the percieved level of success in teaching special needs children and two teacher groups on a sub-category of academic expectation. On sub-categories of general philosophy of intergration, special teacher expertise, academic expectation, and behavioral expectation, however, main effects were found for the percieved level of success in teaching special needs children teacher gender, presenting significantly more positive attitudes in the teacher groups with higher perception level of success than low ones. 5) No significant interaction effects were found between the availability of supportive services and two teacher groups on all sub-categories. On sub-categories of general philosophy of intergration, special teacher expertise, and behavioral expectation, however, main effects were found for the availability of supportive services, showing significantly more positive attitudes in the teacher group received more supportive services than less ones. 6) No significant interaction effects were found between the usefulness of supportive services and two teacher groups on all sub-categories. On sub-categories of general philosophy of intergration and special teacher expertise, however, main effects were found for the usefulness of supportive services, presenting significantly more positive attitudes in the teacher group percieved the supportive services usefully than the groups perceived unusefully. In conclusion, the results mentioned above seem to suggest that as regular teachers have significantly negative views of mainstreaming and handicapped students, it is necessary to provide regular teachers with in-service programs for changing their attitudes toward mainstreaming. The results also suggest that as 1-3 grade teachers, the teacher groups with higher perception level of success, the teacher groups received more supportive services, and the teacher groups perceived the supportive services usefully presented more positive attitudes toward mainstreaming, these variables needs to be considered for successful implementation of mainstreaming program and teschers' attitude change.
