Abstract
This thesis is study on the Spanish songs 『Siete Canciones Populares Espanolas Espaiiolas』by Manuel de Falla (1876-1946), comprising seven songs, which were performed at the writer's Graduation Recital. Falla, who is known as one of the proponets of nationalism in Spanish music, compose these pieces when he was studying in France (1907-1914) The work inculcates a Spanish general feeling by means of the style, melodic line, and rhythm of Spanish folk songs, and it bears the influence of Debussy's impressionism with which he came in contact when studying in France. 『Siete Canciones Populares Espanolas』 are in strophic form or transformed strophic form, and most of the pieces are slings based on dances triple meter. The pieces utilize melisma, restrained phrases with four rising or falling notes, Phrygian mode, and sycopation which are all characteristics of Spanish folk music as a whole. The use of chromaticism, counterpoint, 9th, 11th and 13th chords, and word painting reveal the influence of Debussy's impressionism. Generally speaking, we consider Isaac Manuel Francisco Albeniz (1860-1909) and Enrique Granados (1867-1916) with Falla as nationalists in Spanish music. However, whereas Albeniz and Granados imitated folk music style, 『Siete Canciones Populares Espanolas』 by Falla is a completely work using modern techniques, except for taking folk music as a starting-point
