Feltmaking 에 의한 soft sculpture 연구

Abstract

Soft Sculpture는 Soft한 소재로 3차원의 입체물이나 부조로 표현되는 순수조형의 예술작품을 의미하며, 그 발달사적 근원은 입체파^(1)의 꼴라류^(2) 작업에 기인한다. 1960년 초 현대미술은 예술가의 발견과 대중의 예속 사이에 커다란 시간적 차이를 유발하며 대중과의 뜨거운 단절 상황을 초래하였기 때문에 꼴라쥬를 면밀히 이용한 Soft Sculpture의 출현은 '새 미술'의 의미로서 3차원을 향하는 미술전반의 열기로 인하여 전후세대에 의하여 앗쌍블라쥬^(3) 미술을 창출하게 된다. 이 시대에 새로운 표현매체를 연구하던 팝아트 작가인 그레어스 올덴버그 (Claes Oldenburg)의 Soft한 일련의 입체작품들은 예술비평가들에게 높은 평가를 유발하였으며 Soft Sculpture의 개념정립에 결정적 역활을 수행하였다. 이와 같은 Soft Sculpture는 봉제된 형태와 직조형태로 이루어졌기 때문에 그 시대의 섬유예술가들에게 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 그 결과 섬유예술가들의 다양한 입체작품들이 등장하였고 그들의 활발한 활동에 힘입어 대중적 욕구를 충족시키기 위한 실험적인 해결방안의 하나로 토착문화 속에 잠재되어 있는 전통소재의 재 발굴에 관심이 집중되어 70년대 이후 미국을 중심으로 섬유예술 작가들에 의해 새로운 조형언어의 개발이 새로운 시장에 의해 재인식 되었고 그 효과는 즉시 매혹적인 감흥을 불러일으켰다. 이와 같은 펠트는 독특한 공정에 의해 두께, 질감조절 용이하며 유연성, 가소성, 점착성 등 다양한 물리적 특성을 가지고 있어서 Soft Sculpture를 표현할 수 있는 적당한 재료라 하겠다. 본 논문에서는 Feltmaking에 의한 Soft Sculpture를 연구범위로 하여, Soft Sculpture의 가능성과 조형세계를 모색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 작품제작은 겨울을 주제로 하여 매섭게 추운 겨울날에 더욱 따뜻함을 그리워하고, 차가운 고드름을 보며 만지고 싶은 욕망, 또 온통 하얀 겨울날에 순수와 창조의 느낌을 느끼며, 잎이 다 떨어진, 죽은 듯 서 있으나 겨울에도 크는 나무들, 벽난로에 둘러 앉아 따뜻함을 나누는 모습들, 바람이 많이 불던 스산한 겨울밤 등… 추운겨울날을 느끼는 이야기들을 포근한 양모로 나타냈다. 겨울은 봄을 기다리듯, 차가움과 따뜻함, 빛과 어두움, 삶과 죽음, 기쁨과 슬픔등 대비적인 느낌을 표현하고자 했으며, 대비적인 색채와 Felt를 사용하므로 그 의미를 더하고자 하였다.;Soft Sculpture, which comes to be highlighted as a new genre of modern arts with modern ideas and concepts, was introduced by one of the Pop Artists in the 1960s. Clases Oldenburg, as a new plastic arts. After him, lots of artists caused materials anew and variously. Namely, they opened a new genre in arts by expending their expression methods from plain to relief even the space. In the new techniques and plastic methods especially using Felt, one of the varies materials to express Soft Sculptures, are suggested in that it can make use of its features best for Soft Sculptures. And Joan Livingston and Lois Lancaster are also Explored for they are widening the belt of plastic consensus with their Soft Sculptures made of felts. Another purpose of this study is not only to find out any possivilities in Soft Sculptures made of felts but also to Study new methods of plastic expression by the Felt Soft Sculpture practically. In producting Soft Sculpture with felt you can use the felt specific Felting^(1), its mysterious feeling and original flexibility, to reinforce the features Soft Sculptures have differently from other kinds of Sculptures. In addition, even the spatial expression comes to be possible, to say nothing or solid expression. Such a Felt practrice can suggest another possibility of plastic arts through the exprimental researches and positive engagement.
