Abstract
This study is designed to investigate the effects of TV for the development of young children's musicality through the TV programs currently telecasting for pre-school children in Korea. The program titles are "Television Kindergarten: One Two Three" by KBS, "Ppo Ppo Ppo" by MBC, "Ding Dong Deng Kindergarten" by EBS. The purpose of these TV programs is to help children's intellectual, emotional, and physical growth. Television is one of the influential mass media emerged in modern life. It has been a great educational influence on young children, since it becomes one of the main learning enviroment for the children to learn and imitate. Also as an audio-visual medium, it can affect the development of their musicality by providing various sounds f o r them.' Musicality for the pre-school children is the ability to perceive and express what they hear in musical behaviors. For this study, children's musical behaviors are classified into 4 categories: moving to music, singing, playing instruments and creating. In order to gather the information of children's responses to music, above 4 categories are questioned. These materials were distributed to the parents in 3 pre-schools: one is located in wealthy apartment area, one in middle class residential area and one in a rather low level of income. Total subject of 174 female and male children were used for this study. Collected materials were processed in terms of frequency for- each item of inquiry and the percentages were compared between the items. Means and standard deviations are also obtained in sex, age, previous musical experience and TV watching program as background of the children. T-test, F-test were done in order to analyze the differences for items of preliminary inquiries. The results of their concrete responses on each category of musical behavior are as follows: 1. In moving, the responses such as moving the body freely according to music or moving to physical exercise appeared relatively high. But, responses of expressing the content of words or conducting in regular movement were shown very low. 2. In singing, the responses of their singing after they heard songs from TV appeared very high, and also responses of trying to sing correctly and to imitate performers were high. 3. In playing instruments, the responses in distinguishing between timbre of an instrument and voice was high but the response in playing instruments after seeing and hearing appeared low. It represents that they are at a very low degree in using musical instruments. 4. In creating, the response to expressing and creating their own feeling or thought through extempore movement or singing rather than verbal expression were viewed high, and the response in creating the music with instruments were seen very low. As the results of study, female children's respond to music is better than male children's. It could be seen also that they any in individual experience of musical lesson or the extent of watching pre-school children's education programs did not have an influence upon children's musical behaviors. To sum up, the music from TV pre-school children's education program have a good effect on moving, singing among the musical behaviors of young children, while it does not have a great influence on the area of playing instruments and creating.
