Abstract
Music lives through interpretation and a musical work is brought to life by the interpreter's practical performance. Therefore, theoretical and analytical study of the historical backgrounds of a work, form and style, and characteristic techniques is essential because it gives an assistance to interpretation of the work. This study, based on graduate recital program, is aimed to review historical background of works, developmental stages of forms and understand the structures, compositional techniques of works, and help the practical performance. Summary of this study is as follows: Leclair's Sonata in D Major consists of binary form which is characteristic of the church sonata in the Baroque Era. And the third movement is composed of slow dance music, Sarabanda while the fourth movement adopts vivacious Tambourin. This work is written with the new technique at that time - multiple stopping, double trill, difficult articulation - and also represents the characteristics of Baroque Music through the texture of homophony, melodic ornaments, active rhythms etc. Beethoven's Sonata op.24 in F Major has a typical sonata form in which scherzo replaces minuet. Characteristics of Classicism are shown in this work, such as clear thematic melody, contrast of the first theme and the second theme and organic construction. Franck's Sonata in A Major is composed in the Romantic sonata form. This great work is an agglomeration of various techniques. The characteristics in this work are cyclic form which forms organic unity by three cellules through the entire sonata, a variety of rhythms, chromatic harmonies and also the chromaticism of lyrical flow, the sudden modulation, the contrafungal treatment.
