The purpose of this study is to clarify the syntactic and semantic which properties of {-k□t□n} which functions either as an adverbial embedded sentence ender {-k□t□n_(1)} or as an indicative sentence-ender {-k□t□n_(2)}. In Chapter 2, after outlining the syntactic properties of adverbial embedded clauses, I attempted to demonstrate the syntactic characteristics of {-k□t□n_(2)} adverbial clause which functions as an embedded clause-ender and it's meaning. By means of the operations of anaphorization and topic restriction, I argued for the adverbial nature of {-k□t□n_(1)} that it is an embedded clause-ender and that it is not a conjunctive affix. In addition, there are two other pieces of syntactic evidence that shows the {-k□t□n_(1)} clause is adverbial: (1) it can occur rather freely n a number of positions in a sentence which is a typical behavior of an adverbial clause, as long as it does not cross over a modal adverb, and (2) it can form an integral part of the cleft sentence. {-k□t□n_(1)} shows the unique characteristic which is semantic in nature. It is generally agreed that {-k□t□n_(1)} forms a coditional clause. However, I argued for the proposition that it conveys a further meaning of speaker's belief that the action expressed in the {-k□t□n_(1)} clause would be actually realized. There is a syntactic restriction when {-k□t□n_(1)} is embedded in it's matrix sentence. That is, it is embedded if and only if the speaker's attitude of matrix sentence is imperative, propositive, promisable and intentional. Or, at least, someone's action should be manifested in the matrix sentence. Moreover, {-k□t□n_(1)} can be used only if the predicate verb is an action verb and the subject is either 1st or 2nd person. The retrospective affix {-t□-} can not co-occur with {-k□t□n_(1)}. But {-at-} indicating the completion, {-ko itta} indicating the progression of action, {-□ itta} indicating the duration of the state, {-keyt-} presenting the presumption of the speaker, and {-keyt-} of {-ly∂-} representing the speaker's intentions can co-occur with {-k□t□n_(1)}. In Chapter 3, I elaborlate on the syntactic and semantic properties of {-k□t□n_(2)}, which I distinguished from {-k□t□n_(1)}. {-k□t□n_(2)} is a sentence-ender like other sentence-enders which represent the speaker's attitude towards the hearer and the speech level reflecting the mutual status of the speaker and the hearer. I argued for the fact that {-k□t□n_(2)} exclusively shows the indicative mood. That is, it represents the cause of the preceding utterance, the fore-ground situation of a story to follow, and the speaker's emotional attitude when it accompanies a corresponding tone. It is also different from {-k□t□n_(1)} adverbial clause in that {-k□t□n_(2)} can not co-occur with {-keyt-} or {-ly∂-} which indicate the intention of the speaker, and that the sentence finished by {-k□t□n_(2)} is not able to form a cleft sentence. However, a conditional adverb clause can be embedded into a {-k□t□n_(2)} clause, in which case the subject can be topicalized. The present study, thus, has shown that {-k□t□n} should be classified into two categories, i.e., {-k□t□n_(1)} and {-k□t□n_(2)} on the basis of the differences in their syntactic fucntions as well as semantic properties. The contribution of the study may be found in the characterization of {-k□t□n_(2)} as a sentence-ender.-
