James M. Lee의 사회과학적 종교교수론

Abstract

본 논문은 현대 종교교육의 문제점에 대해 하나의 새로운 가능성을 제시한 James M. Lee의 사회과학적 종교교수론을 소개하고, 이를 한국교회교육에 적용해 보고자 시도되었다. 한국교회는 양적인 급성장과 현대성의 도전에 직면하여 교회교육의 질적인 혁신을 위한 주요과제인 교수·학습과정의 과학화와 교사의 전문성 개발의 필요성을 갖게 된다. 이를 성취키 위해서는 James M. Lee의 사회과학적 종교교수론이 상당한 시사점을 제시해 준다고 본다. 1970년대초 새로운 시각을 가지고 부상한 James M. Lee는 '종교교수' ( Religious Instruction )라는 독특한 명칭을 사용하여 그의 정체성을 확립하고, 이제까지 지배적이어왔던 신학적 접근이 종교교수의 성격과 과제에 타당치 못한 접근이라 비판하면서, 사회과학적 종교교수론을 정립하여 종교교수의 새방향을 제시하였다. 즉, 기존의 종교교수는 대개 실천신학에 예속된 한 형태로 간주되어, 단순히 신학의 메시지를 전달하는 심부름꾼( a messenger boy )이나 신학적 내용을 알기쉽게 번역해 주는 것 ( translation )으로 그의 독특한 존재적 기능을 발휘하지 못해왔다. 그리하여 Lee는 "종교교수는 신학에 예속되는 한 가지( a branch )라기 보다는 오히려 사회과학의 한 양태 ( a mode )이다"라는 전제 하에서 사변적, 추상적, 논리적인 탐구방식의 신학적 접근보다는 인간의 모든 현상을 실험·경험적으로 연구조사하는 방식을 사용하는 사회과학적 접근( Social Science approach )방식이 더 합당하다는 것이다. 이렇게 Lee는 종교교수이론의 근본적인 이론적 구조틀( theoretical framework )로 사회학적 접근을 수용하면서 그 근거위에서 제시되는 이론적 설정에 따라 실제적인 교수방법과 과정을 연결시키는 구체적이고도 과학적으로 체계화된 실제이론( praxiological theory )을 정립하였다. 이와같은 Lee의 이론은 기존 신학적 접근의 지배하에 있는 현 종교교수의 비효과적, 비과학적, 비전문성의 문제를 극복할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하는데 큰 공헌을 하였으며, 한국교회교육에의 적용가능성을 찾게 하는데 의미를 주는 것이라고 보는 것이다.;This thesis an attempt to introduce James M. Lee's Religious Instruction Theory as a Social-Science Approach which suggests a new solution for the problems inherent in the present religious education and to apply it to the Korean church education. Religious Instruction is the kind of intentional educational process by and through which desired religious learning outcomes are actually facilitated to a considerable degree. The church of Korea has accomplished quantitative growth. At the same thme, the church needs qualitative growth to match the quantitative growth. That is to say, the Scientific teaching-learning process and professional development of teachers are necessary. J.M. Lee's Religious Instruction theory as a social-science approach will be able to meet such need. James M. Lee maintains that religious instruction in the past was considered to be a form subordinated to conventional theology and no more than a messenger boy or a medium for translation to convey theological message. James M.Lee indicates that it is an invalid approach with the character and work of the religious instruction, the theological approach, and asserts that "religious instruction is a mode of social science rather than a form of theology". Thus, he establishes the ground for Social Science approach. Because it is more consistent with the characteristics and work of religious instruction. Under this basic assunption, he was introduced the scientific macrotheory which expounds that the effective teaching act can be operated autonomously only regard to any place by the professional function of teacher. First of all, Lee constructs the fundamental theoretical framework on the base of Social Science approach. Therefore he makes possible the theoretical communication as well as Social Science within this framework. The contributions of Lee's theory to the possibility for overcoming the problems of inefficiency and lack of profession in religious instruction under the dominant influence of the theological approach. In this thesis , I have tried to examine the possibility of applying his theory to Koeran religious education.
