Abstract
Modern nuclear family, which is based on capitalist economy system and patriarchal monogamy, has become the structural mechanism for sexual discrimination. Therefore the purpose of this study is to suggest an appropriate alter- native against modern nuclear family in order to overcome structural defects of it. To support this, three analytical frames were made, which are the analysis of production, sexuality, birth and raising children. The core of this analysis is to expose the aspects of sexual discrimination of modern nuclear family. As industrialization goes on, family and working place have been divided. In addition to that women are excluded from production area by capitalism and male laborer, and their activities are isolated from labor-market, limited to family. As children and women are restricted from labor participation, women almost exclusively had to take a role of raising children in isolated nuclear family. This inevitably leads women to depend upon their husbands and also gives children dependency and ego-centric personality. As this male dominance has been extended to permit him superiority to women on sexuality, Sexuality of woman has been restricted to birth. This male dominance of production, sexuality, birth and raising children strengthen patriarchal ideology in capitalist society. Using the above analytical fram, commune as possible alternative against modern nuclear family is examined in chapter Ⅲ. This kind of commune have been organized and administered by two principles; the principle of integrity and egalitarianism. Through the former we can perceive sisterhood and friendship among alienated and isolated individual in modern society. On the other hand, through the latter we can enjoy our good and equal lives regardless of the difference of sex, age and wealth. Woman can enjoy equal social position and rights with man through this egalitarianism in commune. As stereo-typed sex-role is eliminated in each area of society, woman takes a roles of production and participates actively in every field of society. In addition to that, she rejects the male dominance of sexuality, establishes a sexual identity and can form a mutual fulfilled sexual-relations. Also by socialization of raising children woman can choose her own work for herself and children can enjoy equal rights with adult and have round character. According to equality principle they made efforts to eliminate the sexual discrimination institutionally but they did not always succeed. Because sex-role ideology in the existing family and inferior conditions of women, commune could not realize true equality. Therefore, to achieve true equality between man and woman it is needed rather equality of condition than that of opportunity. In short, changing socio-structural system which causes sexual discrimination should be pursued as long-term goals in Korea through critically reviewing existing nuclear family. Indeed a new consciousness to look forward to the possibility to build a new commune will have to be inspired. This study, it is hoped, will contribute in clarifying the negative aspects of modern nuclear family from the feminist perspective and in showing possible alternatives for commune.
