현대섬유예술의 종이작업에 관한 고찰

Abstract

종이는 중국에서 발명된 이래 수많은 변형을 거쳐 개발되어 오는 가운데 그 기능의 폭도 다양해졌다. 이미지 전달의 매개체, 정보의 저장수단 등, 종이의 다양한 기능 중 藝術媒材로서의 기능 역시 종이가 발명된 이래 지속적으로 그 소임을 다하여 왔다고 하겠다. 그러나 일상주변에서 너무나 흔하기 때문에 藝術媒材로서의 종이의 역할은 그다지 큰 주목을 받지 못하였다. 종래에는 종이를 아이디어와 이미지를 전달하기 위한 단순한 재료로만 생각하여 왔던 예술가들이 현대에 들어오면서 새로운 媒材로서 인식하게 되었다. 그 결과 종이의 역할에 큰 변화가 생겨 被動的 表面에 불과했던 종이가 미술작품의 중요한 소재로 바뀌게 된 것이다. 즉 많은 재료의 포화상태 속에서 예술가들은 천연섬유로 된 종이를 재발견하게 된 것이다. 종이작업의 회화적인 기원은 입체파의 papier-colle로 소급된다. 종이는 더 나아가서 Collage기법의 소재로도 활용되고 60년대 오브제회화의 복귀와 70년대의 Minimal Art 및 Conceptual Art의 출현으로 종이를 새롭게 인식하게 되었다. 현대섬유예술에서도 종이는 다양한 기법으로 사용되어 중요한 재료 중의 하나가 되었으며 다른 재료와의 과감한 혼용으로 종이에 대한 새로운 해석이 가능해졌다. 또한 습기와 열과 압력에 쉽게 반응하는 종이의 可塑性을 이용한 부조적이고 입체적인 작품으로도 표현되기에 이르렀다. 현대미술 사조의 흐름에 따라 종이는 단지 媒材로 사용될 뿐만 아니라 paper-making이라는 새로운 예술영역까지로도 확대되어 사용되었다. 이렇듯 섬유예술에서 종이의 가능성은 깊고 무한다고 보아야 할 것이다. 현대의 종이작가들이 手工종이를 통해 자신의 세계를 표현하였듯이 본 연구자도 유연하고 질긴 특성을 갖고 있는 전통한지인 닥종이를 사용하여 이미지를 표현하고자 하였다. 우리 전통종이의 아름다움이 현대 타피스트리 기법을 통해 새로운 조형미를 갖는 예술작품으로 표현되었을 때 우리의 생활은 좀 더 신선해질 수 있을 것이다.;Since invented in China, paper has become an important article of living necessaries in human society. The paper was originally used as the material of image transmission and information storage. The paper was expanded its roles by including the function of art medium, but the role has been failed to draw attention, because paper could be found very popularly. The modern artists recently see the paper in a new light as a new medium. In other word, the paper which was no more than a passive surface of an art in the past has become an important part of art works. The artists have rediscovered the paper as a natural fiber among the varieties of materials. The paper work using paper as materials comes back to papiercolle of cubists. The paper could also be used as materials of collage. Through the revival of object drawing in 1960's and the formation of Minimal art and Conceptual art in 1970's, the paper could be newly recognized and made itself object o work. In the modern fiber art, the paper can be used in the various techniques, and become one of important materials. The soft sculpture was made by utilizing the plasticity of paper. The paper work has been developed with fulfilling the role of medium parallel to the trend of modern art. The modern paper workers exhibit their own world through formulating hand-made paper. In the future the paper shows deep and unlimited ability as an art medium.
