패각(貝殼)의 조형성을 이용한 자수표현연구

Abstract

예술작품은 자연을 조형적으로 연구하여 예술가 자신의 독창성과 개성을 통해 내면세계에 존재하고 있는 감성을 형상화한 것이다. 인간은 본능적 조형 충동에 의한 창조행위를 자연의 형상 속에서 조형요소로 유추해 내었고 다양한 표현 방식의 예술 작품으로 모색해왔다. 이러한 예술적 표현 대상이 되어온 자연의 형태 중 패각(貝殼)은 인간 생활과 밀접한 연관성을 띠며 다양한 형태와 풍부한 질감, 곡선 적인 리듬, 변화와 반복성 등의 조형미를 지니고 있다. 본 연구는 패각의 풍부한 질감과 곡선의 생동감을 자수 기법과 퀼트 기법의 응용을 통하여 표현하고, 그 조형적 효과를 연구하는 데 목적이 있다. 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 패각의 의미와 패각의 조형적 특성에 대하여 분석하였다. 패각의 의미는 인류와 패각과의 문화사적인 관계에서 찾아 크게 네 가지로 분류하고, 각각의 예를 들어 살펴보았으며, 패각의 조형적 특징은 형태, 질감, 색채로 나누어 분석하였다. 둘째, 패각의 조형성 표현을 위한 기법으로 퀼트에 대하여 알아보았다. 퀼트의 개념과 종류, 표현기법에 대하여 고찰하였고, 다양한 퀼트 기법을 이용하여 패각을 표현한 작품을 살펴보았다. 셋째, 국내외 현대 미술 및 섬유예술 작품에서 나타난 패각의 조형성 표현에 대하여 비교, 분석하였다. 작품제작은 패각의 형태와 표면 무늬에서 보이는 곡선을 단순화하여 반복, 재구성함으로써 생명의 순환과 성장 이미지를 표현하였다. 앵무조개, 소라, 가리비의 형태를 응용하여 완전한 형태를 갖추거나 조각난 파편의 형태로 표현하였으며, 응집, 분산시켜 구성하였다. 전체 화면의 곡선형태에 기계 수를 사용하여 패각의 질감을 표현하였고, 패디드 아플리케(Padded Applique) 기법과 트라펀토(Trapunto) 기법의 복합적 사용으로 패각의 입체적 형태를 강조하였다. 패각 형태의 표현 방식은 입체감의 정도에 따라 바탕 천에 패각의 형태를 수놓는 방법, 패디드 아플리케 기법을 사용한 부조적 방법, 트라펀토 기법으로 별도의 천에 패각 형태로 수를 놓아 뒷감을 대어 박고 솜을 집어넣는 입체적 방법으로 나누어 표현하였다. 작품의 재료는 패각의 질감표현에 적합한 수직실크, 자카드(jacquard)직 실크를 사용하였고, 패각의 다양한 곡선 표현을 위해 꼬임과 굵기에 변화를 준 견사를 사용하였다. 자수 기법으로, 패각 표면의 규칙적인 곡선 표현에는 이음수와 감개수를, 불규칙한 곡선 표현에는 쌀알수, 매듭수, 기계수를 사용하였다. 패각의 입체적 표현에는 이음수와 매듭수, 징금수, 감개수, 트라펀토, 패디드 아플리케 기법 등을 사용하였다. 패각의 조형성을 분석하고 자수작품을 제작하여 얻어진 조형 효과를 바탕으로 다음과 같은 결론을 얻게 되었다. 첫째, 패각의 형태적 특징을 결정짓는 중요한 요소가 되는 곡선을 재구성하여, 자수와 퀼트기법을 통해 표현함으로써, 패각이 지니는 생명의 순환과 성장의 역동적 이미지를 표현할 수 있었다. 둘째, 자수와 트라펀토 기법, 패디드 아플리케 기법의 복합적 사용은 패각의 부조 형태를 강조하는 데 효과적이었으며, 자수에 있어서 속수의 개념을 보다 적극적으로 확대시킬 수 있었다. 셋째, 바탕화면에 두께가 다른 두 겹의 천으로 퀼팅하여 형성되는 주름의 효과로 패각의 독특한 재질감을 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 패각의 미묘한 질감 차이를 효과적으로 표현하기 위하여, 견사의 꼬임에 있어서 강도나 굵기의 변화를 주고, 다양한 굵기의 튜브, 반짝이 실과 비드 등을 사용하였다. 다섯째, 동일한 색상 계열 안에서 다양한 색상의 실을 혼합하여 적절히 사용함으로써, 빛에 따라 변하는 패각 색감의 특성을 표현하는 데 효과적이었다. 이와 같이 패각의 조형적 형태미를 자수 작품으로 표현하여 자연이 지닌 가치와 조형 예술로서의 가능성을 모색할 수 있었다. 앞으로 패각의 조형성을 효과적으로 표현하기 위한 기법의 다양하고 새로운 시도를 통해 방법과 재료에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 진행되어야 할 것이다. ; Fine arts is the shaping of human aesthetics existed in the artists inner world through the originality and personality of artists studying on the formative research of the nature. Therefore, human being have analogized a creative activity by the formative impulses using the formative factors in the nature, and groped for the purposes through the various works of art. Shell-shape which is the one of the nature s shaping have been the materials for the work incessantly and it has the formative charms such as the various shapes, plentiful textures, curved rhythms, alterations and repetitions. The objective of this research is to express the plentiful textures and curved movement images of shell-shape with the application of the techniques of embroidery and quilt, and to study on the formative effects of shell-shape Theoretical backgrounds of this research are following. First, I analyzed the informative characteristics and meanings of shell-shape. The meanings can be classified into the nihility and the transience of human life, the symbols of women and feminine genders, religious authorities, and a mystery of creation, which are examined through some examples. I also examined the informative characteristics of shell-shape, particularly its shapes, textures and colors. Second, I reviewed the quilt techniques for expressing the formatives of shell-shaped. So I investigated the concepts, the kinds and the expressing techniques of quilt as well as a various works of art which expressed the shell-shape using the various techniques of quilt. Finally, I had comparative studies on the informative expressions of shell-shape which were appeared in the works of modern arts, especially fiber arts, by domestic and foreign artists I expressed the circulation of life and the growth images through the skills of simplification, repetition, reconstitution of curved line which could exist on the shapes and surface patterns of shell-shape. For the purpose, I cohered and dispersed the applied shapes of nautilidae, top shell, scollop through the full shape or the splintered piece. In addition, I expressed the textures of shell-shape using the machine embroidery on the curved shape of full picture, and emphasized the solid beauty of shell-shape through the complex using of techniques such as Padded Applique and Trapunto. The expression methods for the shape of shell-shape included the embroidery on the ground textile which was used for expressing the shape of shell-shape, a relief method using the Padded Applique, and the Three dimensional Trapunto technique which inserted the cotton into the embroidered textile. The materials used in my works included a hand-woven silk and jacquard silk for expressing the textures of shell-shape, and used also the silk yarn which had various twists and thicknesses for expressing the various curved shapes of shell-shape. The techniques used in my works included the outline stitch and the coiling technique of stitch which were used for expressing the regular curved surface of shell-shape, while the rice stitch, French knut stitch and machine stitch was used for expressing the irregular curved surface of shell-shape. In addition, I expressed the solid beauty of shell-shape using the outline stitch, French knut stitch and couching, and the coiling technique and quilting techniques such as Applique and Trapunto. Based on the analysis about the informatives of shell-shape and the informative effects from some embroidery works, I could induce following conclusions; First, I could effectively express the circulation of life and the growth image through the embroidery and quilting technique which is used for reconstituting the curved lines that were important factors determining the informative characteristics of shell-shape. Second, the compound using of the embroidery and the techniques such as Padded Applique and Trapunto was very effective for expression of emphasizing a relief of shell-shape, and could show the possibilities of three-dimensional expression of shell-shape using the embroidery technique. Third, I could effectively express the unique textures of shell-shape because of the quilted structures which were appeared in quilting the two-fold cloth having different thickness as the background screen. Forth, for the effective expression of the subtle difference in shell-shape s texture, I changed the strength and thickness in the twist of silk-thread, and the various thick tube, a glittering yarns and bids . Fifth, It was very effective for expressing the characteristics of light-oriented color of shell-shape that I use the various color tone yarns in same color tone series. Henceforth, I could grope for the values and possibilities of nature as formative arts through the expression by embroidery works of the beauty of form within shell-shape. I propose the continuous studies on the methods and materials through various and new trials for expressing the informatives with shell-shape effectively.
