형태의 단순화와 감성 표현연구

Abstract

A work of art contains everything of an artist. It shows thoughts and life of an artist. This thesis begins from expression of my thoughts, senses and my concerns about formative sense. From the time we had Art, many art '-ism' were created. The influences of this art '-ism' are well expressed in countless paintings, sculptures and designs throughout our time and these '-ism' appeared and disappeared in time. In our current modern time, many art '-ism' coexist. Our modern society is a culture of mixed spiritual and social values. Therefore, an artist does not pursue one specific trend of the period, which he or she lives in. However, even if an artist has one’s own strong individuality in his or her artwork, there is at least one artistic influence from some other artwork that has consciously or unconsciously affected the artist. That influence melts into the artist's art style and makes a trend. Moreover, if this trend appears in other art works from that point onwards, we may as well call that an '-ism' of that period. Like I have mentioned before, in our modern mixed plural culture, many art trend coexist. However, I think there is a main trend that we pursue and through this main trend, we can understand our current era and culture. In this complicated period, people want 'simple and clear' in everything. Also to get what one want, one summarizes information to get the essence of that information. These logical actions from rationalization are happening not only in our daily life but also in art. 'Simplicity' has become one of our main trends. This trend of making every form simple is very similar to modern people's propensity to make everything summarized and rationalized. I think that design makes a trend. In my opinion the lead design in our current time is ‘simplified expression’. Many examples proves this; 2006 spring/summer fashion concept was ‘minimalism’, LG chocolate phone, APPLE I-pod, simple design of Google website etc. Indeed the main trend is ‘simple and minimal’. From long time ago, people were thinking and judging reasonably. However, it is in the 20th century when people begin to think more reasonably through development in technology. Humanism evolved in 19th century from Illuminism, which was based on Rationalism and Experimentalism. From this period onwards, people begin to have new values that was different from the values of traditional time. This progressive phase led us to Modernism. In the period of Modernism, industrialization and mass production was valued and the society became a consumer's society. Thus it became a capitalistic society. Modernism influenced everything in culture. As industrialization and science became more and more advanced, people begin to envy modernism and it practically became a symbol of that period. Modernism was influencing all life style in that time and art was not an exception. Artists begin to pursue geometrical and mechanical expressions. Many art movement evolved in this time such! as cubist, constructionist, De-still and absolutism. The starting point of these art movements was rationalization for mass production. Rejecting complexity and simplifying everything is one of our current values. It also is a creation of our time. This ‘rejecting complexity and accepting simplicity’ reflects our people ‘s modern mind and I am not an exception. I want to express this mind of mine into my art works. However even if modern people have similar thoughts, every each person have their own individual emotion that is not affected by any surrounding. Our emotion is generated by genetic, natural and empirical facts. It is like basic instinct. If two different people have similar feeling towards one artwork, that is because they share similar emotion. Rene Huyghe said, "If you are artist, you express your emotion in art work." I also express my emotion through my artwork. Although an artwork may be very mechanical and somewhat cold, it has an emotion of its own. Modernist art works has emotions too. I tried to express my own rational mind and emotions in my art works through simplifying forms and softening colors and naturalizing techniques. I also wanted to make an attractive form of an order and soft watercolor métier. So I tore papers and drew simple forms through touches of a brush and watercolor techniques. The reason for choosing watercolor was its transparency and softness expressed soft and emotional texture very well. Art does not have a clear answer. A picture is meaningful when an artist expresses his or her thoughts and emotions in the picture. I hope to have a good opportunity to experience and experiment when expressing my rational mind and emotion in my art works. Moreover, I hope to find a new route of an expression.;작품에는 그것을 표현하는 작가의 생활모습, 사고 등 그의 모든 것이 담겨있다. 본 연구의 작품 역시, 본인의 사고와 감성을 표현하려는 고민에서 시작되었다. 예술이 생겨난 이래, 많은 미술 사조(ism)가 있어왔고, 이것에 영향을 받은 작품들이 한 시대의 유행을 주도하며 나타났다 사라져 갔다. 현대에 들어서는 하나의 미술 사조가 주를 이루지 않고 많은 미술 사조가 동시에 존재하는데, 이는 다양한 가치의 혼재시대라는 표현에 걸맞게 내용이나 방법상의 변화적 진폭이 커졌기 때문이다. 그래서 현대 작가들은 어떤 특정한 하나의 미술 사조만을 추구하지 않는다. 하지만 아무리 개성이 강한 작가여도 자신에게 영향을 준 미술 사조가 적어도 하나씩은 있게 마련이며, 그것은 은연중 각각의 작가들이 만들어낸 그들만의 스타일에 녹아들어가 일정한 경향성(傾向性)을 띄게 된다. 이때, 이런 비슷한 경향의 작품들이 반복되어 등장한다면, 바로 그것을 시대의 ‘주류’(主流), 트랜드라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 이 트랜드에서 현대인의 사고와 현 시대･문화를 알 수 있을 것 같다. 복잡한 정보사회에서 사람들은 보다 간결하고 명료한 것을 원한다. 자신에게 필요한 것만을 선택적으로 얻기 위해 정보를 요약하고 정리하는 현대인들의 일반적인 모습들에서 이런 점을 볼 수 있다. 요약과 정리의 과정은 일상생활을 넘어 예술에서도 찾아볼 수 있는데, 본인은 많은 예술의 표현 중에서 단순화시키는 표현이 그러하다고 생각한다. 특히 형태를 단순화시켜 표현한 작품들은 단지 대상을 ‘simple’하게 만든 것이 아니라, 그 대상의 본질만을 표현하려는 실험이다. 따라서 ‘단순화된 표현’을 정리･요약･본질을 추구하는 행위로 본다면 ‘단순화는 보다 명쾌한 것을 선호하고 논리와 이성적으로 사고하는 현대인들의 성향과 관계있다’고 보아도 무난할 듯하다. 현재 우리 사회에서 유행하고 있는 LG사의 초콜릿 폰이나 APPLE사의 I pod, mackintosh, google 사이트, 미니멀리즘 스타일의 의류 등을 보면 현대인들이 얼마나 단순하고 명확한 것을 선호하는지 알 수 있다. 단순하고 간결한 디자인이 유행하는 이유는 대부분의 사람들에게 기본적으로 기능과 효율을 중시하고, 외관의 단순함･산업디자인이 가져다 준 가치(산업화에 의한 단순한 형태, 모듈화 방식)를 아름답다고 생각하는 사고가 작용하기 때문이라고 생각한다. 이미 현대인들의 생활 속에서 ‘단순화 양식’은 다양한 분야에서 익숙한 존재가 되었다. 사람들이 이성적으로 판단하고 사고하는 것은 아주 오래전부터 있었던 일이지만, 예전보다 더 합리적이고 효율적인 사고를 하게 된 시기는 과학이 급격하게 발전한 20세기로 거론된다. 19세기의 계몽주의는 합리주의와 경험주의를 바탕으로 사람들에게 인본사상을 심어주었는데, 이를 계기로 사람들은 전통과는 다른 새로운 시대의식(현대성), 진보의식을 갖게 되었다. 더불어 사람들은 이 ‘모더니티’사상으로 가치체계에 변화를 갖으며 20세기 자본주의의 확립과 함께 더욱 획기적인 사고의 변화를 갖게 되었다. 사회는 산업화, 공업화로 대량생산･대량소비가 이루어지는 ‘소비사회’로 변화했는데, 이로 인해 예술 역시 자본주의적 논리 속에서 대량생산이 용이한 기계적･기하학적인 면을 추구하게 되었다. 그리고 모듈화･기계화등과 같은 산업적인 생활양상의 전개는 미적 감각에 변화를 주어 ‘모더니즘’양식으로 표현되었다. 그것은 현대적인 삶의 유행과 병행하는 것이었고, 보다 더 정돈된 환경을 만들어 내는 것이었다. 산업사회에서 추구되어야 할 모더니즘은 순수하고 합리적인 형태로 정의 내려졌고, 사회･문화 전반의 근대화 및 합리화에 관계되는 용어로 사용되었다. 즉, 과학과 산업의 발달은 사람들의 사고에 명백한 반향을 불러일으켰고, 모더니즘은 어느 시대나 모든 사람들이 동경하고 선호하는 생활방식을 규정하는 수단이 되었으며, 하나의 예술형식을 넘어서 그 시대를 설명하는 대표 단어가 되었다. 당시의 예술 표현 양식이었던 모더니즘에는 모더니티 사상이 반영된 입체파와 데 스틸, 구성주의 등이 속한다. 이 작품들을 살펴보면, 본질을 추구하고 대상을 기본요소로 환원하려는 정신이 깃들어있음과 과학적으로 대상을 바라보고 기계적 모티프를 사용하여 당시의 현대를 표현했음을 알 수 있다. 후에 나타난 미니멀리즘도 최소한의 예술로 불필요한 것을 배제하였는데, 본질을 추구하고 대상의 기본을 표현하려 했다는 점, 대상을 보다 명확하고 합리적으로 만들려고 했다는 점이 모더니즘작품들의 정신과 연관된다. 앞서 말했듯 과학적으로 접근하여 불필요한 것을 배제하고 대상을 명확하게 표현하려는 모더니즘의 ‘단순화’는 당시의 소비사회를 잘 나타내고 있다. 모더니즘 작품에서 볼 수 있는 단순화된 형태들은 소비사회의 효율적인 생산, 논리와 이성을 중요시했던 시대를 잘 반영한다. ‘사람들의 사고는 환경에 영향을 받는다.’는 것을 알 때, 현대인들이 효율과 기능을 중시하고 합리적으로 사고하는 것은 모더니즘 시대, 과학이 발달한 20세기에서 영향을 받았음을 부정할 수 없다. 하지만 사람의 사고가 모두 환경에 의해 변화하는 것은 아니다. 인간은 어느 누구나 환경의 변화에 크게 영향을 받지 않는 감성을 갖고 있으며 이것은 유전적, 선천적, 자연적 경험 등으로 형성된다. 감성은 인간에게 본능과 같은 것이기 때문에 서로 다른 지역에 사는 사람이 같은 그림을 보고 비슷한 감흥을 얻는다면, 이는 감성의 영향 이라고 할 수 있다. “작가라면 자신의 작품을 표현할 때, 자신의 감성을 표현한다.”는 르네위그(René Huyghe)의 말이 있다. 본인 역시 의식하지 않아도 작품 속에 본인의 감성을 표현한다. 작가는 선을 하나 그을 때나 색을 하나 칠할 때도 자신의 감성과 성향, 자신의 내면모습을 충분히 보여주기 때문에 아무리 딱딱하고 기계적이며 논리적인 그림 속에도 작가의 감성은 반영되어 있다. 모더니즘 작품에서도 작가의 감성은 느껴진다. 본인이 나타내고자 하는 감성은 앞서 언급한 단순한 형태의 이성적이고 논리적인 것 에 비해 자연스럽고 부드러운 면을 표현하고자 한다. 요약하고 정리하는 합리적인 표현으로 형태를 단순화 시켰다면, 그에 반해 시각 표현 요소인 색, 질감 등으로 작품을 부드럽고 자연스럽게 만들어 본인의 이성과 감성의 조화를 실험하고자 한다. 주목적이고 단순한 형태와 자연스럽고 부드러운 수채화 물감의 번짐 기법으로 각각 명확하고 자연스러운 표현을 이루려는 것이다. 종이를 찢거나 수채화 물감을 뭍인 붓 터치로 형태를 단순하게 하고 높은 순색에 가까운 색을 번짐 기법으로 감성을 표현할 것인데, 많은 질감 표현 중에서 수채화 물감을 선택한 것은 수채화의 투명성과 쉽게 번지는 특성이 자연스럽고 부드러워서 색의 농담을 나타내기에 쉽기 때문이며, 종이와 물이 만나 이루는 재질에 따라 성질 즉, 이것이 주는 질감이 본인 감성에 적합하다고 생각했기 때문이다. 그림은 명확한 결과와 정확한 답이 있는 것이 아니라, 작가의 감성과 사고를 표현하는 그 자체에 훨씬 더 큰 의미가 있다. 본 연구를 통해 본인의 조형성을 정리하는 기회를 갖고, 앞으로 더 좋은 방향을 모색하고자 한다.
