사이버 여성 문화로서 팬픽(fanfic) 연구

Abstract

팬픽(fanfic)은 10대 여성들의 대표적인 사이버 문화로 알려져 왔다. 특히 이들이 남자 연예인들을 대상으로 만들어낸 가상의 사랑 이야기들이 이성뿐만 아니라 동성간의 사랑을 다루고 있어 사회적인 관심을 받아 왔다. 때로는 팬덤의 연장선으로, 혹은 사이버 문학의 한 장르로, 또는 사회의 성규범에 일탈적인 10대들의 문화로 팬픽을 이해하려는 다양한 시각들도 제기되었다. 하지만 이런 논의들이 인터넷이라는 매체를 통해 팬픽을 만들고 그것을 소비하는 주체들의 내면적인 욕구와 특성들에 대한 분석들을 놓치고 있다는 점에서 본 연구는 출발하였다. 팬픽 문화 주체들인 청소년기 여학생들의 일상과 일탈, 사랑에 대한 기대와 욕구, 그리고 매체와의 관계까지 다양한 맥락에서 살펴보고자 하는 연구 목적에 따라 본 연구는 온라인과 오프라인에서 소규모 집단 인터뷰와 개별 심층 인터뷰를 통해 진행되었다. 이처럼 온·오프 라인을 동시에 활용함으로써 팬픽 사이트 개설자나 운영단 같은 적극적 참여자뿐만 아니라 게시판에서 팬픽을 감상만 하는 소극적 참여자까지 다양한 활동 층위의 인터뷰 대상들을 포함할 수 있었다. 인터넷 매체를 이용한 사이버 문화로서 두드러지는 팬픽 문화의 특성은 단순한 정보 교류에서부터 비공개 클럽과 앤언니같은 친밀한 관계들까지 다양한 차원의 상호 작용과 온라인 상에서 그들만의 또래 집단-가상 공동체-를 형성하고 있다는 것이다. 더욱이 정체성을 형성해 가고 있는 10대의 여학생들은 팬픽을 통해 경험한 관계의 친목성에 특별한 의미를 부여하고 있었다. 본 연구가 주목했던 팬픽 주체들의 환타지는 그들의 다양한 상상력들이 발화된 것으로, 그것을 만들어내고 교류하면서 이는 유의미한 경험으로 남아 그들의 성정체성 형성 과정에도 복잡하게 연관되어 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 구체적으로, 자신들의 정체성을 형성해 가는 단계의 나이 어린 여성들이 보여주는 사랑과 성적 환타지들은 현실의 성적 질서를 따라가기도 하고, 동시에 위반하기도 한다. 이러한 모순은 되고 싶은 여성상이 무엇인지, 그리고 어떤 성애적 욕구가 있는지 잘 알지 못하고 있는 10대 여성들의 의식이 반영된 것으로, 환타지를 통해 현실의 여성 억압적 성적 질서를 과감히 배반하지만 그 대안을 찾기란 어렵다는 것을 보여준다. 특히 팬픽 주체들 사이에 인기가 많은 동성애 소설은 자신들이 바라는 남성상과 탈권력화된 남성상이 각각 부여된 남성 주인공들이 이성애의 남성 지배적 권력 구조를 답습하고 있는데, 이는 팬픽 주체들이 위반한 사회적 금기의 한계를 보여준다고 하겠다. 가상공간의 다양한 성적 환타지의 경험은 팬픽 주체들이 기존의 성정체성과 이분법적인 성적 질서를 벗어나 유동적이고 다양한 성정체성을 형성하는데 영향을 미치는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 팬픽 문화에서 보여지는 다양하고 복잡한 성적 환타지는 기존의 성질서 비틀기라는 측면에서 여성 문화로서 의의를 지닌다. 여성들의 모순되고 동시에 사회의 고정 관념을 벗어난 환타지는 남성 위주의, 그리고 이성애 중심의 성적 질서를 뒤집고 있으며, 현실을 위반한다. 사이버 소수 문화로서 10대 여성들이 자유롭게 그들의 욕구를 드러내는 팬픽 문화는 주체들이 여성주의적인 감성을 지속적으로 교류할 수 있는 대표적인 여성 문화로서 발전 가능성을 지녔다고 할 수 있겠다. ; It is widely believed that fanfic is the prime example of teenage girls cyber culture. Especially, the fictive love stories involving male celebrities came into a spotlight as they reveal both hetero and homo sexuality. There exists a spectrum of perspectives in attempts to understand fanfic as an extension of fandom, a genre of cyber literature, or a deviation from sexual norms by teenagers. Nevertheless, these perspectives lack the analysis of internal desire and characteristics of the people who write and consume fanfic on the Internet as its medium. This is the starting point of this paper. With the aim to examine various contexts including daily lives, deviation, expectation, and demands of teenage girls who are the subject of fanfic culture along with the its relationship with the medium, this research is carried out through interviews of on-line and off-line small groups and in-depth interviews of the selected individuals. By utilizing both on and off line statuses, interviews were able to reach various levels of participation from the active involvement of fanfic site creators and site managers to the passive involvement of bulletin board readers. The characteristics of fanfic culture, a cyber culture using the internet as its medium, include simple information exchange, interactions in various levels of intimacy, and a peer group-virtual community. Furthermore, teenage girls who are at the critical stage of identity formation have placed a special meaning to the friendship formed through fanfic. The fantasies of fanfic writers, the focus of this paper, are the very expressions of the writers diverse imaginations. As they are expressed and shared among the group, these imaginations are in complex relations with the process of sexual identity formation. For example, the love stories and sexual fantasies of these young girls whose identities are in the premature stage follow the sexual order of the real world but also it. Such a contradiction is a reflection of the teenage girls consciousness not sure of what woman identity and sexual desires are. This shows that although girls attempt to deviate from the oppressive sexual order of the real world through fantasies, it is difficult to find the alternative. Especially, in many stories depicting homesexuality which are most popular among fanfic writers, the heros created in the preferred males images like depowered are framed according to the male dominating power structure of heterosexuality. This shows the limitation of the taboos which the fanfic writers are violating. The experiences of sexual fantasies in virtual space seem to influence the formation of diverse and fluid sexual identity deviating from the existing sexual identity and dualistic sexual order. These diverse and complex sexual fantasies found in the fanfic culture is significant as a women s culture in that it challenges the existing sexual order. These fantasies of women contradictory and at the same time breaking away from the customs are overturning male and heterosexuality centered sexual order and are in violation of the reality. As a cyber minority culture where teenage girls freely express their desire, the fanfic culture has a potential to become a prominent women s culture where feminist sensitivity is continually exchanged among fanfic writers.
