카무플라주 이미지를 이용한 인간의 과시성 표현

Abstract

사람은 누구나 취약한 부분이 있기 마련이다. 삶을 살아가는 동안 자존감을 높여주는 경험도 하겠지만 반대로 상처를 받거나 위축되는 경험도 하게 마련이다. 인간은 나약한 존재이기에 상처받기 쉽고, 한 번 받은 상처를 치유하기 위해서는 많은 노력과 시간이 필요하다. 그러한 이유로 인해 인간은 자신의 취약점을 감추고 스스로를 보호하기 위해 여러 기재들을 사용한다. 노력으로 극복하려는 경우도 있고, 있는 그대로의 모습을 받아들이고 인정함으로써 치유하기도 하지만 그렇지 못한 경우에는 오히려 사실보다 크게 나타내 보임으로써 자신을 보호하기도 한다. 즉, 스스로를 보호하기 위한 방어기재로서 ‘과시’를 하는 것이다. 과시를 하는 근본적인 이유가 남보다 우위에 서기 위해서, 혹은 타인에게 무시를 당하지 않기 위해서 하는 것이라면 방법적으로는 흔히 과시소비를 떠올릴 수 있다. 상층계급에 속하는 부류들은 일하지 않거나 사회적 지위나 위신을 드러내기 위해서 값비싼 상품을 소비함으로써 자랑하기도 하고, 반대로 경제적으로 여유가 없는 하층계급은 무리를 해가며 상층계급을 모방하는 소비를 함으로써 과장해 보인다. 경제적 측면이 아니라 일상의 다양한 부분에서도 인간의 과시성은 발현이 되는데 본 연구자는 과시를 하는 인간의 속성에 관해 주목했다. 이는 마치 생물계에 있는 보호색을 인간도 같은 맥락에서 사용하고 있는 것이 아닌가 하는 생각을 했다. 이에 본 연구자는 인간의 과시성에 대한 이론적 탐구를 바탕으로 한 작품제작을 통하여 과시성을 이용한 보호를 표현해 보고자 했다. 본 연구의 목적은 카무플라주 이미지를 이용하여 인간의 과시성을 표현한 조형작업을 8점 제작하는 것이다. 작품제작에 앞서 주제에 대하여 연약하고 상처받은 나약한 모습을 숨기고 공격 받지 않기 위해 오히려 더 과시를 하는 것이라면 ‘보호’라는 것이 필수 상황인 군대를 떠올리게 되었다. 흔히 ‘삶이 전쟁터’라는 표현을 하듯 우리의 삶을 전쟁터에 비유할 수 있기 때문이기도 하다. 전쟁에서 입는 군복에 사용되는 카무플라주 패턴은 ‘위장’이라는 의미를 가진 말이다. 적으로부터 자신의 몸을 숨겨야 생존에 유리하기 때문에 주변 환경과 흡사한 무늬와 색으로 위장하는 것이다. 하지만 정반대로 독개구리나 독뱀, 독버섯 등은 화려한 몸 색깔로 자신을 보호하는데 이 점을 연구자의 작품제작과 연관 지어 카무플라주 이미지에 적용시켜 보았다. 화려한 색으로 꾸며진 카무플라주라는 역설적 의미로서 ‘과시’와 ‘보호기재’라는 두 가지 의미를 함축시켜 본 것이다. 그래서 형광색이라는 명시성이 높은 색과 다양한 재료를 사용하여 캔버스 위에 이미지를 만들어가는 표현방식을 선택하였다. 본 연구자는 인간의 과시성을 카무플라주 이미지로 조형화하는 과정 속에서 조형의식을 확대시키는 것은 물론, 인간의 속성을 탐구하며 인간에 대해 더 깊이 이해해 보고자 한다. 더불어 카무플라주 이미지나 그 속성을 자신의 작품과 연관 지어 작업한 작가들의 작품을 분석한다. 그리고 다양한 작가들의 색채 사용에 대해 알아보고 색채 대비란 무엇인지, 형광색이란 무엇인지, 현대미술에서 재료와 기법의 중요성에 대해서도 알아본다. 인간의 삶과 인간이 살아가는 사회에 대한 관찰을 통해 얻은 ‘과시성’이라는 속성을 섬유조형 작품으로 제작하는 과정은 본 연구자에게 있어 조형 예술 활동에 대한 지평을 더 넓게 해 주었다. 실제 쓰이는 카무플라주 무늬를 확대하여 명시성이 높은 강렬한 형광색과 다양한 재료를 사용하여 특유의 질감을 만들어 내는 작업을 해 나가는 동안 그것들이 잘 어우러져 조화로운 이미지를 만들 수 있는 방법에 대해 연구할 수 있었다. 이를 계기로 본 연구자의 예술 활동을 실천해 나가기 위해 앞으로 더욱 깊은 사고와 관찰과 탐구 의지를 가지고 지속적인 연구를 수행해 나가야 할 것이다.;Every person is bound to have vulnerable points. The experiences one goes through in life sometimes enhance self-respect, but sometimes causes hurt. Because human beings are weak they are prone to emotional damage and such damage takes much time and effort to cure. For this reason, human beings employ various methods in order to hide their vulnerabilities and protect themselves. Some attempt to do this through repeated effort and some learn to accept themselves as they are, but when this fails people try to protect themselves by making themselves look more impressive than they actually are. In short, people show off in order to protect themselves; as a method of defence. The fundamental reason people show off is to place themselves above others or to avoid being disregarded by others, and conspicuous consumption can be seen as a common method. Those who are part of the upper class show off their social status by not working or by extravagant consuming. On the other hand, those who are of the lower class spend way over their budgets to show off in this way. Showing off is manifested in various aspects apart from the economical; this research focuses on the manifestations of showing off as part of human nature. It is based on the thought that showing off is used by human beings in the same context as protective coloration is used in the biological world. I have attempted to express the protective function of showing off through works of art based on the theoretical study of human beings' desire to show off. The purpose of this research is to produce eight formative pieces, expressing the human desire to show off ,using camouflage images. In the view of showing off as a defense mechanism used to disguise vulnerability and avoid attack, the notion of protection made me think of the military, which is a compulsory situation. Likewise, we commonly speak of the "battlefield of life," comparing our lives to a battlefield. The meaning of the word "camouflage," which is used in the name of the patterns of military uniforms, is "disguise." It refers to the disguising of oneself with patterns and colors that melt into one's surroundings, in order to conceal oneself from the enemy. Contrarily, however, certain poisonous frogs, snakes, mushrooms and such are known to protect themselves with their showy body colors, and I have used this in my work in connection with camouflage images. Through camouflage made of flashy colors, I have attempted to implicate a paradoxical meaning including both the notion of showing off and the notion of a method of protection. To achieve this end, I have chosen to use highly conspicuous fluorescent colors along with various materials to create images on canvas. Through the process of expressing the human desire to show off through camouflage images, I aim to widen the understanding of the nature of human beings as well as to broaden the process of formative arts. In addition, I will analyze the works of artists who have employed camouflage images or qualities in their pieces. I will also explore the use of color in various artists, what contrasting colors and fluorescent colors are, and the importance of material and technique in contemporary art. The process of expressing the human nature of showing off in fiber plastic pieces, obtained through observation of human life and human society, has allowed me to go further into the depths of formative art. During the process of expanding real-life camouflage patterns into creating a unique texture using highly conspicuous, strong fluorescent colors and various material, I have had to speculate on how to balance everything into a consistent whole. I will hereby continue my research with deeper consideration, observation, and determination as I pursue my artistic activities.
