韓末 '대한력사'의 分析 硏究

Abstract

본고에서는 한말 국사 교과서 연구의 일환으로 1908년 H.B.헐버트에 의해 편찬된 『대한력사』를 분석·고찰하고자 하였다. 외국인에 의해 편찬되었지만, 『대한력사』가 한말의 전환기적 시대 상황 속에서 우리의 역사 인식을 강조함으로써 나름대로 교과서로서의 역할을 잘 감당하지 않았을까 하는 가정 하에서 연구를 시작하였다. 연구 방법은 문헌 연구의 방법을 취하였고, 먼저 『대한력사』가 편찬된 시대적 상황과 구체적인 편찬 배경, 편찬 동기들을 연관시켜 검토하였다. 그리고 『대한력사』의 구성과 내용 분석을 통하여 당시의 전통사학과 근대사학의 미묘한 갈등, 제국주의 침략에의 대응 및 자주독립정신의 고양 등이 어떻게 반영되었으며, 그 한계는 무엇이었는지 검토하였다. 또한 현행고등학교 국사교과서와의 비교·검토를 통하여 교과서로서의 기본적 역할을 제대로 감당하였는지 함께 알아보았다. 이 책의 저자인 헐버트는 1886년 교육고문관으로 내한하여, 광무제와 개인적 친분관계를 맺으면서 교육·선교·저술활동을 하고 나아가 국권상실의 위기에 본국(미국정부)의 정치적 중립원칙과 달리 한국을 대변하여 국권 회복을 위한 외교 활동을 벌였다. 『대한력사』의 편찬 배경과 동기를 살펴보면 한 마디로, 이 책은 을사 5조약 이후 강화된 식민교육·우민화 교육에 대한 저항과 한국인에 대한 사랑 및 한국 민족·한국 역사에 대한 긍정적 시각을 바탕으로 저술되었음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 서문을 통하여 이 책이 한국인의 문명화와 계몽을 위하여 편찬되었음도 알게 되었다. 『대한력사』는 구성상 전통사학의 입장을 표방한 구사체 교과서라는 한계를 보여주고 있으나, 부분적 서술에서는 근대적 요소들이 공존하고 있어 근대사학의 영향도 전혀 없지 않았음을 알 수 있었다. 더구나 순국문으로 쓰여져 보다 많은 사람들에게 역사 교육의 기회를 확대하였다는 계몽적 측면의 영향력도 지니고 있었다. 『대한력사』의 내용 체계는 비록 정치사 중심, 인물 중심의 전통사서들과 흐름을 같이 하고 있다는 한계가 있으나, 오히려 이러한 점이 당시에 민족적·애국적·자주적 인물을 교육하는 계몽적 역할을 감당하기에는 더 유리하였다고 볼 수 있겠다. 다만 저자인 헐버트가 자신의 근대적 역사 인식 체계를 미처 우리의 역사에 접목시키지 못한 채 구사체 전통사서의 내용을 대부분 그대로 수용한 결과, 역사를 지배층 중심으로 파악하여 서술하였기 때문에 민중들의 생생한 삶의 현장을 『The Passing of Korea』만큼 부각시키지 못하였다는 점에서 그 한계를 보여주고 있다. 또한 그 내용 구성에 있어서는 중요 사실·사건 등이 대부분 언급되고 있어 교과서로서의 기본적 기능은 충분히 감당하였다고 보여진다. 이렇듯이 『대한력사』는 외국인에 의해 편찬된 저술이고 하권이 함께 발간되지 못하였다는 약점에도 불구하고, 한말 전환기의 역사 교과서로서 그 역할을 비교적 잘 수행하였다고 평가할 수 있겠다. 즉, 『대한력사』는 한말 전환기적 배경 속에서 밀려드는 제국주의 침략에 저항하여 한국인의 자주독립정신을 일깨우고, 교육을 통하여 문명화를 이루어 가는데 기여하였다는 측면에서 일정하게 그 역사적 의미를 찾아 볼 수 있을 것이다. ; The aim of this study as a part of investigating the Korean history textbooks of the late Cho-sun dynasty was to analyze and examine 『The History of Korea』 compiled by H.B. Hulbert in 1908. Also the book was compiled by a foreigner, this study started with an assumption that the book must have well performed its role as a textbook by emphasizing the historical consciousness of the Korean race when Cho-sun dynasty faced with a sudden transition in its late period. For this study, literature reference was done at first, and then the social conditions of the days when Hulbert compiled 『The History of Korea』, concrete background and his motive of compilation were examined. Secondly, the composition and contents of that book were analyzed to see how the delicate conflicts between the conventional and modernized historians of that time and the Dynasty s confrontation with the invasion of imperialism and exaltation of national independence were reflected and what limitations it has. Also through comparison with the current history textbooks and review of them, the question whether 『The History of Korea』 played a proper role as a textbook was explored. Hulbert visited Korea as an educational advisor in 1886 and began to take an active part in the educational, missionary and literary activities and furthermore diplomatic activities for the restoration of Korea s national rights since he made a close, personal acquaintance with the pro-Korean Chinese King Kwangmu-je. As for the background and motive of his compilation of 「The History of Korea」, it can be said in short that his revolt against the Japanese colonialistic and obscurantic education policies after the forced Five Agreement between Korea and Japan in 1906 and his love of Korean people and positive view on the Korean race and history made him write that book. The introduction says that the book was written to civilize and enlighten Korean people. Although the book has some limits as a descriptive textbook following the principles of conventional history, coexistence of modernistic elements in some parts implies the influence of modern history. In addition, the book must have produced a kind of enlightening influence upon common people since it was written in Korean and thus gave them an opportunity to learn Korean history more easily. As for the contents, there are the conventional strong inclinations to describe history mainly around politics and national leaders, but this perhaps made this book more advantageous for playing its enlightening role to enhance national spirit, patriotism and sense of independence. However there is something desired about this book because the author Hulbert understood our country s history from the conventional view and dealt with historical events centering around the ruling class without trying to graft the modernistic historical view of his own into Korean situations that his book hasn t been given as much light as 「The Passing of Korea」. Also in the composition of the contents, importants historical facts and events were mostly addressed that the book played its basic role as a textbook sufficiently enough. As we have seen, 「The History of Korea」 is a book written by a foreigner, and it is unfortunate the second volume never came out. Nevertheless, the book can be said that at least it did its best in carrying out its role as a history textbook. Consequently speaking, we can see the historical significance of 「The History of Korea」 lies in its contributions to the Korean people under the transitional hardships of the late Cho-sun Dynasty by awakening their spirit of self-independence against the sudden invasions of the advanced imperialistic powers and by enlightening them through education.
