죠셉 코넬(Joseph Cornell)의 상자 작품에서 나타나는 유희성에 대한 연구

Abstract

죠셉 코넬이 활동했던 시기는 추상표현주의가 미국뿐만 아니라 세계의미술을 주도해 나갔던 시기와 일치하기 때문에 그의 미술에 대한 평가는주류미술의 가장자리에 존재했던 비주류적 미술의 하나로서 인식되는 경향이 일반적이다. 그러나 주변적 미술이었음에도 불구하고 코넬의 작품들이이후의 현대미술을 거론하는데 있어 당대의 주류적 미술 못지 않은 영향력을 내재하고 있다는 사실은 많은 미술사가들의 연구를 통해서 인식되어져왔고, 미술사속에서 죠셉 코넬이 차지하는 위상은 아직도 완결되지 않은채 계속해서 평가되어지는 과정속에 있다고 생각한다. 죠셉 코넬이 등단했던 1930년대 미국 미술계의 상황은 하나로 결집되는뚜렷한 구심점은 없었지만 유럽의 초현실주의 미술이 본격적으로 미국에소개되기 시작하면서 미국의 미술가들로 하여금 그 속에서 자신들이 나아가야 할 방향을 모색할 수 있도록 하는 배경을 형성해 나가고 있었다. 코넬은 그 당시 누구보다도 앞서서 그와 같은 타대륙의 미술적 배경을 자신의 예술적 입지의 거점으로 삼았던 미국의 제1세대 작가라고 할 수 있다. 작가가 초현실주의로부터 받은 영향력은 간과할 수 없으나 한편으로 코넬은 초현실주의가 국제적으로 확산되는 가운데 여러 나라의 작가들을 수렴해 나갔던 그 운동의 후속세대에 귀속되는 것을 거부함으로써 그것의 영향력으로부터 벗어났다. 상자를 자신의 미술적 매체로 선택하면서 코넬은 초현실주의자들과 다르면서 동시에 그의 작업이 이루어졌던 시기동안 공존했던 추상표현주의와도 구별되는 독자적인 성격의 미술을 전개시켜 나갔던것이다 따라서 본 연구는 코넬의 주된 작업으로 인식되는 상자작품의 특성을 규정하고 분석함으로써 작가의 작품이 갖고 있는 독자성을 밝힐 수있을 것이라는 데에서 출발한다. 코넬의 상자작품에서 나타나는 특성에 대한 언급들은 이미 많은 연구들을 통해 이루어져 왔다. 그러나 본 논문은 상자작품의 특성에 대한 기존의일반론을 탈피하여, 상자작품 전체를 보편화할 수 있는 하나의 성격을 유희성으로 인식하고 그런 본성이 그의 작품속에서 발현되는 양상을 형식적으로나 의미적으로 분석하는 것에 초점을 두는 연구이다. 코넬의 작품속에는 음악 문학, 발레, 연극, 영화 그리고 자연과학에 대한언급이 통합되어 있다 이것은 인간과 관계하는 제문화현상에 대한 작가의관심을 반영하는 것인데, 이런 관심들과 더불어‘유희’또는‘놀이’는 그의작품가운데 빠질 수 없는 부분이었다. 유희를 제외한 다른 부분들이 주제나 소재와 연관되어 작품의 이미지나 모티브가 되고 있다고 할 때 코넬에게 있어 유희는 상자라는 형태속에서 조금 다른 양상으로 작품속에 내재화되어 있다. 물론 코넬은 꼴라쥬 작품에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼 부분적인 이미지들을 통해 유희에 대해 표현하기도 하지만 무엿보다도 그가 상자작품자체를 유희성을 표출하는 하나의 실체로 만들고 있다는 점이 본 연구가주목하고 있는 부분이다. 코넬이 상자작품을 통해 제시하고 있는 유희성은 그것의 물리적이고 심리적인 측면으로 인해 관람자가 작품에 적극적으로 개입되는 감상과정속에서 발현되고 있다. 그러나 무엇보다도 코넬이 상자를 유희적 객체로서 표현하는 이면에는 작가의 개인적 경험과 그가 추구했던 사상 및 종교적 의미가 복합적이고 상징적으로 표출되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 이때까지이루어져 온 코넬의 상자직품에 대한 일반적인 고찰과는 달리 유희성을 상자미술의 특성으로 인식하고 그 구체적인 표출양상들을 살펴봄과 동시에더 나아가 그것의 의미체계를 밝힘으로써 코넬의 작품이 표면상으로는 유사할지라도 그것이 미술사적으로 연관성을 맺고 있는 여타의 경향들과 어떤 점에서 변별되며 독자성을 갖는지를 조명해 보았다는 점에서 그 의의를찾아볼 수 있다. ; When Joseph Cornell started his art career, Abstract Expressionism was at the mainstream in the world art circle including America. Despite the tendency to regard his art as sub-mainstream, many art historians have been aware of his strong influence on modern art as much as the mainstream did in his days. The assessment of his work has not been complete and I therefore believe there are still much to study in order to evaluate his art in the context of art history. When Joseph Cornell entered the art world in 1930s, the introduction of European Surrealism was in full scale in America. This trend certainly inspired American artists to develop their own styles based on it. Cornell can be regarded as the first generation artist in America who built up his style on the basis of the European Surrealism. It is therefore natural to consider the effect of Surrealism in his art. Nevertheless, while European Surrealism was pervasive around the world, Cornell resisted from merely following their footstep. Taking boxes as his artistic media, Cornell developed his original style, which should be distinguished not only from Surrealism but also from Abstract Expressionism that coexisted in his era. This thesis attempts to reveal Cornell s unique style by focusing on his "box art" which often considered as his main work. Many scholars have mentioned the characteristics of his box art, but this thesis tries not to be restricted within the general notion of the box art. Cornell s work integrates music, literature, ballet, theatre, film and natural science. This reflects Cornell s interest in diverse aspects of human culture. Together with such interests, the "playfulness" or "play" cannot be excluded from his works. I will attempt to let readers understand one of the characteristics of the boxes as being the "playful" , and will concentrate on prescribing and analyzing on the notion of being "playful" . Even when he uses other motives and images as the theme of his art, one can usually find the playfulness in his work only at slightly different forms. Even for collages, he certainly uses only the partial images of the playfulness, but this thesis pays careful attention to the fact that he uses the box as a whole to express the playfulness. Due to box art s inherent physical nature, audiences experience the playfulness by being more actively involved with the art than many other flat, 2-dimensional arts. But most of all, his way of expressing his idea reflects his complex personal experiences together with theoretical and religious interests. In short, this thesis first assumes the playfulness as the main characteristic of his art then investigates how it is expressed and tries to understand how his work relates and separates from other trends in art history.
