서양 자수(Embroidery)를 응용한 복식 디자인 연구

Abstract

의복은 인체와 가장 밀접하여 제 2의 피부, 또는 신체적 자아의 확장이라고 한다. 즉 의복은 살아있는 인체에 입혀짐으로써 비로소 완전히 성립되며, 인간의 직접적인 표현의 장이므로 의복과 인체는 분리하여 설명할 수 없다. Semper(1803＿1879)는 ‘인간이 장식하기 위한 의복을 만들 줄 알게 되었을 때 비로소 예술의 기초는 이룩되었다’고 말하였다. 이처럼 인간은 본능적으로 자신을 아름답게 보이고자 하는 욕망이 있다. 인간은 미적 감정의 표현으로 신체를 장식하려는 본능적인 충동이 있음을 알 수 있다. 이에 장식은 복식의 하나의 요소로 뚜렷이 자리잡았고, 이러한 기능은 인간에게 또 하나의 만족감을 주고 있다. 현대화 된 사회를 살아가면서 인간은 수많은 형태의 장식들을 만나고 있다. 패션산업계에서 고급화와 차별화를 목표로 하여 사람들은 다양한 시도를 하고 있다. 이러한 장식의 기능을 복식에서 표현한 방법들 중에서 전통적으로 사용되어온 자수는 인간이 의복을 착용함과 거의 동시에 시작된 장식의 방법으로, 동양과 서양의 구분 없이 전세계에서 다양하고 특색 있게 발전되어왔다. 자수는 여러 시대를 거쳐 많은 형태들을 모티브로 하여 표현되었다. 이에 본 연구는 은하계 우주(Galaxy)의 이미지를 복식에 표현함에 있어서 서양자수(Embroidery)의 방법들을 혼합하여 응용하였다. 다양한 소재와 표현 기법을 사용하여 복식 소재의 재질감을 높이고, 은하계 우주의 이미지를 재구성하여 간결한 문양으로 현대 복식 디자인으로 표현하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 새로운 서양 자수 기법에 대한 연구와 전통적인 서양 자수 기법을 익히고 서양 자수의 내재한 잠재력을 현대 복식으로 표면화하여 복식 소재의 표현영역을 확대하고 고부가가치의 실용적인 현대 복식 디자인을 창출하고자 하는데 있다. 본 연구의 이론적 배경으로는 서양 자수의 특성과 그 개념을 정의하고, 고대 이집트와 비잔틴을 포함한 서양의 자수의 역사를 중심으로 그 문헌과 사진자료를 통해 살펴보았고, 서양자수의 기법과 특성을 설명하였다. 또한 은하계 우주의 특징을 알아보았고, 은하계 우주의 선과 색을 조형적으로 분석하였고, 이와 관련된 참고 작품들을 표집, 분석하였다. 본 연구의 작품제작은 은하계 우주의 이미지에 부합되어 표현되기 위한 서양 자수의 기법을 선택하여 사용하고, 신비롭고 화려한 은하계 우주의 느낌을 고급스럽고 표현하고자 하는데 초점을 두어 총 8점의 작품을 제작하였다. 서양 자수의 종류로는 아플리케 자수(Applique Embroidery). 이탈리안 퀼트 자수(Italian Quilt Embroidery), 퀼팅 자수(Quilting Embroidery), 컷 워크(Cut work), 기계 자수(Machine Embroidery), 금속사 자수(Metal Thread work), 그리고 비드 워크(Beadwork) 등을 사용하였다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복식 장식의 개념으로 수 천년 전부터 사용되어온 서양자수는 동, 서양을 막론하여 발생하였으며, 많은 종류와 기법을 지니고 고대로부터 현대에 이르기까지 그 장식적인 가치가 복식 디자인에서도 그 가치가 뚜렷이 증명되는 고급 수공예로 현대 디자인의 복식 소재의 고급스런 표현기법으로 많은 활용 가능성이 있음을 확인하였다. 둘째, 평면의 직물 위에 바늘과 실을 사용하여 여러 가지 형태로 부가되는 서양 자수는 그 부조적인 재질감으로 복식의 입체적 표면질감을 다양하고 풍부하게 하며 은하계 우주가 가지는 공간적인 이미지를 강조하는 것이 가능하였다. 셋째, 은하계 우주가 가지는 신비로운 분위기는 펠트와 금속사 그리고 실크 노방등이 겹쳐 보이는 중첩의 방법으로 자수함으로써 현대 복식 디자인으로 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 화려하고 선명한 스펙트럼의 색과 운동감과 리듬감을 가진 나선형의 선은 은하계 우주를 조형적인 선으로 구체화하여 표현하는 것을 가능하게 하였으며, 복식에서는 문양의 요소로 활용할 수 있었다. 다섯째, 실크 노방의 세리신 염색과 새틴 자수, 실크 벨벳의 컷 워크와 금속사 자수, 이탈리안 퀼팅 자수와 카우칭 스티치 그리고 그라데이션의 염색과 비드 워크 등의 서양 자수가 가지는 여러 혼합기법들은 서로 연관지어 구성하면서 복식 소재의 표현 기법으로 시도하였는데, 이러한 시도는 현대 복식디자인의 소재 표현 영역을 확대하였다. 본 연구에서, 서양 자수가 가진 많은 장점들은 현대에 와서 소재 표현 기법의 갈구를 해결해 줄 하나의 돌파구가 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 은하계 우주 이미지가 가지고 있는 문양적 요소와 다양한 색채는 현대 복식 디자인의 독창성과 예술성을 높이기 위한 요소로 지속적으로 연구되어야 한다. 서양 자수가 가진 장식적인 특성이 더욱 다양한 방법으로 사용됨으로써 현대 복식 디자인의 소재 표현에의 연구가 활성화되어, 고급화를 지향하는 현대 복식 산업에 고부가가치 산업 창출을 촉진시키는 계기가 되었으면 한다. ; As clothes are most closely related to human body, we call them the second skin or the extension of physical self. Namely, they complete themselves by being dressed in living body. We cannot explain clothes and human body separately because they are the means of direct human expression. Semper(1803～1879) said, “As people learned to make clothes to adorn themselves, the fundamentals of the art were acquired.” Humans desire to look beautiful by instinct. We can find out that human being has an instinct impulsion to adorn himself as an expression of aesthetic feelings. The adornment, therefore, has been an essential factor of the costume. Its function has satisfied people. We face many kinds of adornments. Many designers try various ways to distinguish themselves from others ans make their works look higher in the fashion industry. The embroidery is one of the traditional ways of adornment in costume. Embroidery began almost at the same time people started to wear. It has developed any where in the world variety and with distinction. The embroideries have adopted many forms as their motives for a long time. This work combines and applies the techniques of the occidental embroidery to express the images of the galaxy in costumes. Various materials and expression techniques elevate the quality of costume stuff. I reconstruct the images of the galaxy into simple patterns and express them as ways of modern costume design. This paper aims to acquire the traditional techniques of the occidental embroidery and research new techniques which enlarge the spheres of expression. It reveals that the potentiality of occidental embroidery make modern costume design high value added as well as practical. The theoretical background of this work is to define the occidental embroidery, to explicate its characteristics and to examine the history of the occidental embroidery including those of the ancient Egypt and Byzantine, which explain the techniques and characteristics of the galaxy, analyzes the lines and colors of the galaxy formatively and amasses related works. I create 8 works using techniques of the embroidery to express the images of the galaxy. I focus on expressing the mysterious and opulent feelings of the galaxy with nobleness. The kinds of occidental embroidery used are Applique Embroidery, Italian Quilt Embroidery, Quilting Embroidery, Cut-work, Machine Embroidery, Metal Thread-work and Bead work. With this work I conclude as; First, the occidental embroidery used for thousands years has developed anywhere in the world with many kinds and techniques. Its developed values prove to be high handwork from ancient to modern in costume design. I confirm that it has much applicability. Second, the occidental embroidery cattached to flat textile by needle and yarn enriches and varies cubic surface quality in relieves. It also emphasizes the spatial images of the galaxy. Third, I express the mysterious atmosphere of the galaxy as modern costume design by over-embroidering felt, metal yarn and silk novin. Fourth, clear and opulent spectrum colors and spiral lines with motion and rhythm embody the galaxy with formative lines. Then can be used as patterns in costume. Fifth, I try the mixed techniques like cericin dyeing of silk novin and satin embroidery,cut-work of silk velvet and metal yarn embroidery, Italian quilting embroidery and couching stitch, dyeing of gradation and bead work which has as expression techniques of costume stuffs. This extends the spheres of expression in modern costume design. I confirm that the merits of the embroidery can solve the problem of expression technique shortage. The pattern and various colors of the galaxy images have to be studied further to advance the creativeness and artistry of modern costume design. I hope that the decorative characteristics of the occidental embroidery would be used in more various ways. It would contribute to not only the study of expression stuff of modern design but creation of high value added in modern costume industry.
