아르누보 양식의 조형적 특성을 응용한 만화 표현 연구

Abstract

만화는 미적 감흥을 불러일으키기 위해 글과 그림으로 창조되고 감상되는 예술로, 만화 감상은 우선 그림을 보는 감각적 인식에서 시작되어 글을 해독하는 이차적 인식을 거쳐 그림과 글을 조합하는 이성적 판단의 순서를 거친다. 시각예술로서 만화는 미술적 요소를 내포하며, 그림으로 표현되는 과정에서 미술 사조의 표현 양식에 영향을 받고 있다. 이러한 시점에서 본 연구는 ‘형상화한 이야기’로서의 만화가 이야기를 형상화 하는 과정에서 사용한 표현 양식 중 아르누보 양식의 조형미를 중심으로 연구하였다. 아르누보는 19세기 중반에서 20세기로의 전환기에 산업혁명으로 파생된 획일화, 규격화, 대량생산 방식의 혁신적 변화 과정에서 인간 본연의 창작성과 인간성이 상실되어가는 결과에 반기를 들며 기계문명에 대한 반발로 수공예의 중요성을 부각시키며 나타났다. 아르누보(Art Nouveau)는 새로운(nouveau) 예술(art)을 의미하며 19세기에 대부분의 디자인의 흐름을 지배하였던 역사주의로부터 탈피한 과도기적 장식 예술 및 조형 예술을 가리킨다. 아르누보 양식에서는 직선보다는 소용돌이치며 교차하는 곡선이 주로 사용되며 그러한 곡선을 통해 자연의 유기적인 형태들을 표현하고 실재의 본질이나 자연의 창조활동의 무한한 과정을 효과적으로 표출할 수 있다고 보았다. 이러한 영향으로 아르누보 양식은 장식적이고 화려한 요소를 갖는다. 주로 사용된 소재로는 자연에서 모티브를 취하여 전통적인 형식미를 벗어나 보다 자유롭게 움직이는 생동감을 중심으로 생명력 있는 표현을 추구하였다. 본 연구자는 식물의 생태적 특성을 인간에 대비시켜 인간 관계를 재조명하는 만화를 제작하는 과정에서 아르누보에 나타난 식물 양식을 중심 소재로 하여 유기적인 선을 활용하여 창의적 조형 이미지로 표출하고자 하였다. 이를 위한 이론적 배경으로 우선 아르누보 양식의 특성과 표현 양식, 주요 작가를 살펴보았고 만화의 표현적 특성과 만화에 나타난 아르누보적 조형성에 대해 실사례를 중심으로 연구하였다. 작품의 디자인 과정에서는 아르누보의 표현특성이라 할 수 있는 추상적, 구조적, 상징적 양식, 꽃과 유기적인 양식, 구성적 기하학적 양식을 근거로 하여 식물의 생태를 시각화 하는데 중점을 두었다. 작품의 제작방법은 식물의 생태적 특성을 통해 인간관계를 조명한 만화 작품 두 점을 기획하여 중심 시놉시스를 구성하고 이를 효과적으로 표현하기 위해 각 페이지별 기초 구성 단계를 거쳐 최종적으로 자유로운 선의 느낌을 최대한 살릴 수 있는 펜 드로잉 기법으로 나타내었다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아르누보의 특성인 유기적인 곡선과 장식성을 이용하여 만화의 프레임과 말풍선을 재구성함으로써 스토리라인의 중심이 되는 식물 이미지를 잘 표현할 수 있었다. 둘째, 아르누보의 예술적 형식이 만화에 적용되어 이야기 전달에 효과적인 표현, 조형성과 탐미성의 표현에 적절히 활용되고 있음을 알아볼 수 있었다. 이상과 같은 전개 과정과 결과를 통해 서사구조를 지닌 만화에서 이야기의 효율적인 전달을 위해 사용된 표현양식에 대해 다시 한번 생각하고, 자연 중심적, 유기체적 디자인으로 미래를 잇는 아르누보 양식의 조형성을 만화에 접목시킴으로써 발전적인 만화 표현의 계기를 마련하고자 하였다.;The comics as one of the visual arts contain artistic elements and they have been influenced by the styles of artistic expression in the process of expressing them in the painting. In this regard, this study investigates the formative beauty of Art Nouveau style among various expression styles used in the process of the comics' configuring the 'non-fiction stories.' Art Nouveau challenged the loss of creativeness and humanity in human nature in the process of innovative change such as uniformity, standardization and mass production due to the Industrial Revolution from the middle of the 19th century to the turn of the 20th century and it also challenged the mechanical civilization so that it emphasized the importance of handcraft. In Art Nouveau style, swirling and crossing curves were used more frequently than straight lines and such curves expressed the organic forms of nature and the nature of existence or the unlimited process of creative activities of nature in an effective manner. Therefore, Art Nouveau style was typical of decorative and magnificent elements. The matters used frequently were taken from nature in their motive and the vital expressions focusing on free movement escaping from traditional formative beauty were pursued. I would like to represent the ecological characteristics of plants as creative formative images using organic lines by contrasting human beings in the process of manufacturing the comics that investigate human relationship. First of all, the theoretical background for the characteristics, expression styles and main artists of Art Nouveau is investigated and the expression characteristics of comics and formative element in Art Nouveau style depicted in the comics are also investigated. In terms of the design process of works, the visualization of plants' ecology is emphasized based on abstract, structural, symbolic styles, organic styles with flowers and compositional geometrical styles that were the main characteristics of expression in Art Nouveau. Speaking of the manufacturing methods of works, two comic works representing the human relationship through the ecological traits of plants are planned as a main synopsis and the pen drawing technique that can maximize the feeling of free lines through the basic compositional stages in each page in order to represent it in an effective manner. The outcomes of this study are as in the following. First, the image of plants that are the central story line is well expressed by means of re-composing the frames and word balloons of comics using organic curves and decorative elements that are the characteristics of Art Nouveau. Second, it can be assumed that Art Nouveau is applied to the expression style of the comics in order to be used appropriately in the effective expressions for delivering the stories and for depicting the formative and aesthetic elements. Through the said developmental process and outcomes, Art Nouveau is still persuasive as one of the design logics and it gives us an opportunity to express the constructive comics by combining the formative elements of Art Nouveau such as nature-centered, organic and future-oriented design.
