Patterns and Potentials of Peru's International Trade

Abstract

Using the gravity model, this study examines Peru’s trade patterns by analyzing a panel dataset of the country’s bilateral trade flows with 186 countries for over a period of 22 years (1990–2011). The empirical results for the entire dataset are consistent with the general prediction of the gravity model (positive coefficients for economic size and negative coefficients for distance). Among its main partners, Peru has an unrealized trade potential with Argentina, United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Venezuela. Despite the fact that Peru has trade agreements in place with most of these partners, it seems that Peru has not sufficiently utilized these agreements. Peru also has unrealized trade potential with countries from the Arab League like Sudan, Tunisia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt. These countries which are also members of the Summit of South American-Arab Countries (ASPA), an economic bloc to which Peru belongs, would be desirable partners for concluding a free trade agreement(FTA).;본 연구는 중력모형을 이용하여 페루의 무역패턴을 분석한다. 본 연구에 사용된 자료는 페루의 186개 무역상대국과의 22년간의 패널데이터이다. 실증분석 결과에 따르면 페루의 무역패턴은 중력모형에서 예측되는 일반적인 결과 (경제규모와 양의 관계, 거리와 음의 관계) 와 다르지 않다. 또 하나 얻어낼 수 있는 사실은, 페루의 주요 교역대상국 중 아르헨티나, 미국, 캐나다, 브라질, 멕시코, 콜롬비아, 영국, 프랑스, 독일, 베네수엘라와의 교역을 개선할 필요가 있다는 것이다. 페루가 이 나라들과 대부분 무역협정을 체결한 상태이지만 아직 이 협정이 효과적으로 시행되고 있는 지는 의문이다.수단, 튀니지, 이라크, 사우디아라비아, 아랍 에미레이트, 이집트 등과의 교역도 미미하다. 이 모든 국가들은 향후 페루의 자유무역협정의 파트너로서 우선적 우선 고려되는 것이 바람직하다.
