Johanness Brahms의 <Vier ernste Gesänge, Op.121>에 관한 연구

Abstract

19세기 독일가곡은 피아노의 완성과 독일 서정시와의 결합체에 독일 전통 민요의 특징과 조화를 이루어 예술가곡으로 발전·계승되어 왔다. 리트는 슈베르트(F. P. Schubert 1797-1828), 슈만(R. Schumann 1810-1856)에 이어 브람스(J. Brahms 1833-1897), 볼프(H. Wolf 1860-1903)를 거쳐 독창적인 가곡으로 변모시켜 계승되어 왔다. 요하네스 브람스(Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897)는 낭만주의 시대의 여러 가지 장르 중 하나인 Lied(예술가곡)를 발전시키는데 공헌한 작곡가이다. 그의 가곡은 그가 낭만주의 시대의 작곡가임에도 불구하고 고전주의 음악의 특징을 사용하여 자신만의 독특한 높은 예술적 경지로 승화시켰다. 브람스의 <Vier ernste Gesänge, Op.121>는 그의 후기 작품 중에서 죽음의 내용을 성서에 근거를 두고 있는 종교적인 곡으로서 낭만주의 시대 속에서 고전주의 음악 양식을 흡수하는 동시에 낭만주의 고전적 균형과 조화에 맞게 잘 짜여진 구성적 구조를 가진 그의 대표적인 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 19세기 독일 예술가곡의 개괄적인 배경을 다루었고, 둘째로 브람스의 생애와 음악적 특성, 성악 성부와 반주 성부의 관계성 등을 중점으로 다루었다. 이 곡은 형식과 구조에 있어서는 그가 즐겨 사용한 유절형식이 아닌 통절형식을 갖추고 있으며, 짧은 전주와 후주, 일정한 동기를 기초로 발전시켜나가는 것과 3화음을 주축으로 하는 폭넓은 분산화음, 반음계적 진행, 당김음(syncopation), 크로스 리듬(cross-rhythm), 빈번한 전조 등 가사의 내용과 부합되도록 짜여있다. 그리고 노래 성부와 반주부의 독특한 조화, 어두운 단조와 장조의 대비 등을 통하여 죽음에 대한 느낌을 표현하고자 하였다. 본 논문의 분석내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 각 곡의 형식은 선율간의 긴밀한 연관성이 있는 통절형식이다. 각 곡은 모두 성서에서 가사를 취하고 있으며 빠르기는 Andante, 제 3곡을 제외하고는 4/4, 3/4 박자이다. 그리고 제 1곡과 제 4곡의 음악 구조가 A-B-A′-coda형식이며 동일한 빠르기를 나타내고 있다. 제 3곡에서의 단3도 하행진행으로 만들어진 동형진행은 이 곡에서 ‘죽음의 동기’로 해석할 수 있고, 펼친 화음으로 이루어진 아르페지오 선율이 많이 나타난다. 브람스 가곡에서 선율이 가사보다 우선적 위치를 차지하며 변박과 불규칙한 악구는 다양한 리듬형태를 통해 표현된다. 결론적으로 이 곡은 고전주의적인 기법과 낭만적 요소를 잘 융합시킴으로써 낭만주의적 고전주의자라고 할 수 있는 브람스의 특색을 잘 표현하고 있음을 알 수 있다.;Lied, German Songs of 19th century-turned into artistic songs, is a combination of the development of piano as an instrument and German Lyric. Lied accommodated some characteristics of German traditional songs and then elevated German Songs of 19th century into more artistic level. Lied became more original and artisitc in the hands of F. P. Schubert (1797-1828), R. Schumann (1810-1856), J. Brahms (1833-1897), and H. Wolf (1860-1903). Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) made a major contribution to the development of Lied, one of genres in Romantic era. Despite the fact that he was one of musicians from the Romantic era, his songs made use of many characteristics of musics from the classical era and this in turn elevated his songs to much higher artistic level. Brahms' <Vier ernste Gesänge, Op.121> written in his later years, is religious in its nature by deriving all the lyrics about death from the Bible. This song is definitely one of his representative works which not only absorbed classical music style and balanced it with the Romantism. This article will deal with the overview of 19th century German Lied, then looks into the life of Brahms and characteristics of his music, and lastly the relationship between vocal part and accompaniment part would be discussed. Brahms' <Vier ernste Gesänge, Op.121> uses through-composed form in stead of his usual strophic form in terms of style and structure. Many styles such as short prelude and postlude, development of a certain motive, wide arpeggio based on tried, cromatic progress, syncopation, cross rhythm, and frequent modulation are used to match the mood of lyrics. And he tried to convey the heavy mood about death by utilizing the unique balance between vocal part and accompaniment, moody contrast between minor and major. This paper can summarize the analysis as follows; The style of each song is in the form of through-composed form with very close relationship between melodies. all songs take lyrics from the Bible and the tempo is Andante, with the exception of third song, 4/4 and 3/4 tempo. The progress of first and the fourth are A-B-A'-coda and shows the same tempo. The sequence made of descending third line can be interpreted as the 'motive of death'. And arpeggio made of expansion of the chords appears frequently. in Brahms songs, melodies take priority over lyrics and lirregular times and irregular phrase are expressed through various rhythmic styles. In short, this song combines the technic from the Classicism and the elements of Romanticism, thus shows the essence of Brahms' music, a Romantic Classicist.
