Carl Nielsen의 Concerto for Flute and Orchestra를 통해 살펴본 Nielsen의 작품 경향 연구

Abstract

Carl Nielsen(1865-1931)은 20세기 덴마크를 대표하는 작곡가로 6개의 교향곡과 2개의 오페라, 그 외 다수의 관현악곡을 비롯하여 다양한 장르의 작품을 남겼다. 그 중 Concerto for Flute and Orchestra는 가장 널리 알려지고 대표적으로 연주되는 작품으로, 그의 작품시기에 있어서 후기인 1926년에 쓰여 진 작품이다. 이 곡은 플루트 연주자에게 있어서 중요한 레퍼토리임에도 불구하고 작품에 대한 국내 논문이나 연구 자료가 매우 적고, 작곡가 닐슨과 관련된 단행본도 매우 드문 현실 이다. 닐슨은 후기낭만의 영향을 받은 작곡가이나 음악적 완숙기에 이르러 낭만 사조를 벗어난 개성적 작곡 양식을 선보였다. 이러한 그의 음악적 특징으로는 장르를 뛰어넘는 교향악적 대위법의 사용, 반음계에 대한 범 조성적 시각과 함께 나타나는 시작 조성과 다른 마지막 조성을 목표로 향해 나가는 곡 전개 방식, 확장된 조성음악의 문맥 안에서 자유롭게 등장하는 불협화음, 주제의 모티브적 연결, 짧은 음가의 추동적 리듬 패턴 등을 들 수 있다. 닐슨의 플루트 협주곡은 이러한 특징들을 여실히 담고 있으며, 당대에 이미 20세기의 미학적 사조를 따르면서도 작곡가의 개성이 강하게 반영되어 있다는 높은 평가를 받았다. 위의 특징 외에도 이 협주곡은 음색의 대비가 강하게 들어나 있고, 독주 악기 플루트와 반주 악기의 대등한 사용을 통해, 독주 악기를 통한 주제 제시와 오케스트라의 반주라는 형태를 취해왔던 기존의 협주곡과는 달리 실내악에 가까운 면모를 보이는 특색을 지니고 있다. 본 논문은 이처럼 작품의 중요도나 연주 빈도에도 불구하고 본격적으로 소개되지 못한 닐슨의 플루트 협주곡의 연구, 분석을 통해 작곡가 닐슨과 그의 음악적 특징을 알아보고자 한다.;Carl Nielsen is one of the most influential Danish composers of the 20th century. His early works were influenced by late Romanticism, but in his more mature compositions, he developed his own unique style that resists classification. His work has such a powerful effect that his personal characteristics became Danish musical emblems. His contributions in innovating new symphonic principles rivals that of his contemporary, Sibelius, but they have quite different style. Although Nielsen had enjoyed popular success on stage in his time, compared to Sibelius, critical and academic recognition has come of only recent. Until the mid-20th century, the regional otherness of Scandinavia hindered proper assesment his musicological value. Only after the publishing of Robert Simpson's pioneer book Carl Nielsen; The Symphonist (1952. rev. 1979) Nielsen has gained critical interest and reputation worthy of his originality and Modernistic contributions. The subject of this thesis, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra(1926) is on of his later works, and it has a number of modernistic and remarkable traits. Nielsen's most characteristic compositional feature is "progressive tonality," that is it begins in one key and ends in another. We can see his unique thinking of tonality through this concept. Founded on the base of tonal tradition, his works broadens and innovates this tradition by his concept that all twelve chromatic tones has direct relation to the tonic. This extended tonality can be found throughout almost his works, and particularly in the Flute Concerto's revision to the 2nd movement. The incongruity between the beginning and final tonality makes an enigmatic sound through the frequent appearance of long dissonant passages. "Contrapuntal symphonic development" is also his signature compositional technique. Due to this technique, this concerto‘s orchestration is relatively small but it sounds as splendid as a full scale symphony. In addition, chamber music like duet or trio sections with a solo instrument gives various texture to the concerto's contrasting symphonic fugal section. In this concerto, Nielsen did not conform to a traditional concerto formal layout. There are two movements, not three: neither of which is of a typical sonata form. They are organized through motivic development and thematic expansion. Rhythm is Nielsen's strong point as well. Short rhythmic patterns drive the motives and the thematic groups to form an internal consistency. As the usage of the snare drum in his 5th symphony, the timpani is a leading participant in this concerto. Through his later works, including the flute concerto, Nielsen furthered development and innovation in modernism music, and made a rightful place for Scandinavian music to have a main role in the western music.
