일상의 사물(Object)인 책을 표현한 섬유드로잉

Abstract

These days much attention has been paid to the most private themes among a wide range of aesthetic values, and the ordinary objects or drawings overlooked before are discussed as the aesthetic objects. Basically, our life is a series of days. We can find the aspects of our life through small and humble objects in repeated routine. Those objects retain the traces of everyday life, which disclose ourselves. Based on this, this thesis seeks to explore possibilities of formative expressions by asking fundamental questions toward the author's work which originates from the performance, drawing books. In modern art, as the interpretation of human experiences got more importance the function of drawing as a skill of imitating started to dwindle. Now drawing is not just a trained skill of simply representing objects. It is turning to the most direct and fundamental means to reveal individual artists' inner-self. Consequently, drawing is to visualize artists' inner-self beyond all kinds of techniques, the existence of objects, and completeness, thereby discovering artistic concepts led by the visualization. This thesis aims to ascertain that the act of drawing objects has an expressional value as an aesthetic object for artists in terms of looking into this approach and conducting formative art. To make this aim more concrete, I'll explore what value the book has on my life, and shed a light on the worth of drawing which was usually conducted habitually by displaying a new formative language. Then I'll reflect my inner self in the course of drawing objects which had little attention before. Also, I'll take the process of reinterpreting the drawing as a basis of my own perspective on art. This thesis can be summarized as follows: First, I investigated a variety of concepts of drawing and objects in a theoretical approach. I sought the meanings of both drawing and objects, and their changing concepts. When it comes to a case study, I examined how drawings and objects, especially books, have been represented in art by looking into formative artworks. Secondly, regarding artistic techniques, I used 'machine-stitch', one of the textile art techniques. I found various textile formative works created by machine-stitch and explored the formative possibility of machine-stitch. I also examined how to effectively express the drawing of books using 'machine-stitch'. Thirdly, regarding artistic materials, I studied materials to which the method of machine-stitch is applicable. I analyzed the characteristics of polyurethan and researched on formative artworks using it. I developed a total of eight works based on the research mentioned above. The works include the application of machine-stitch and the inquiry into the use of polyurethan. I drew my own books first and applied machine-stitch technique to my drawing on polyurethan. This whole process of drawing made me pay more attention on the visual aspects of books, which in turn gave me a flexible attitude toward my surroundings. I also found that the ordinary objects around us can serve as a meaningful link between our life and art. Furthermore, I underwent self-affirmation as well as self-reflection. Throughout the research process, I found a chance to discover unique and creative formative language with the themes of drawing and the book. As a textile artist, I expect that these works will foster a textile art-oriented interpretation and lead to an expansion of artistic techniques.;오늘날에는 다양한 미적가치들 속에서 지극히 개인적인 주제에 대한 관심이 고조되면서 그동안 주목하지 않았던 사물과 드로잉이 미적대상으로 거론되고 있다. 근본적으로 우리의 삶은 반복적인 하루하루의 연속이다. 반복되는 일상의 작고 소소한 사물을 통해 삶의 단면을 발견할 수 있다. 사물들은 매일 퇴적되는 삶의 흔적을 고스란히 담아내고 있으며, 그러한 모습이 곧 우리 자신을 여과 없이 드러내주고 있는 것이다. 현대미술에서는 인간 경험에 대한 해석이 더 중요하게 되면서 모방적 기술연마로서의 드로잉의 기능은 감소하기 시작하였다. 이제 드로잉은 단순히 사물을 재현하는데서 그치는 기술적 훈련이 아니다. 예술가의 내면을 표출시키는 가장 직접적이고 근본적인 방법으로 변모하고 있다. 드로잉은 모든 형식의 기법, 대상의 유무, 완성과 미완성을 초월하여 예술가의 내부를 가시화시킴으로써, 그 결과에 따라 예술적 개념을 발견하는 것이다. 본연구자가 주변의 모습을 드로잉하면서 책이라는 사물에 관심을 기울이게 된 것은 다른 물건들보다 책을 많이 버리지 못하고 있었기 때문이다. 자신이 책을 계속 간직하고 싶은 마음이 강하다는 것을 알았다. 본 연구자는 같은 책을 자주 읽는 것은 아니지만 가끔 과거에 읽었던 책을 다시 읽어볼 때 즐거움을 느끼고 있었다. 이처럼 책이라는 사물은 읽는 사람에 따라 그들만의 해석과 이해가 생기게 하는 사물이며 사람은 책을 통한 경험을 자신의 일부로 만든다. 자신만의 독특한 기억을 가지게 된 책은 잃고 싶지 않은 존재가 된다. 그래서 사람은 자신이 읽은 책들로 이야기될 수 있다. 본 연구자는 이처럼 자신이 간직하고 있는 책들이 자신을 보여줄 수 있다는 점에서 책 드로잉을 시작하게 되었다. 이를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 책 드로잉 이라는 행위를 기본으로, 작품제작에 대한 연구를 통해 본인의 작업 방향에 대하여 연구하고자 한다. 또한 앞으로 진전 시켜야 하는 보다 더 근본적인 질문들을 통하여 조형표현의 가능성을 찾아보고자 한다. 이에 대한 구체적인 방안으로 본 연구자의 삶 속에서 많은 사물들 그리고 그동안 습관적으로 행해졌던 드로잉의 가치를 새로운 조형언어로 보여주고자 한다. 이러한 조형화 과정을 거치면서 드로잉을 통해 방치 되어 있던 사물에 자신의 내면을 투영해 본다. 또 드로잉을 새롭게 조형화 하는 과정을 본 연구자의 조형시각의 기반으로 삼고자 한다. 본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이론적 접근을 통해 드로잉과 사물(Object)에 대한 여러 개념을 알고, 달라지는 의미들을 찾아본다. 사례연구에 있어서는 드로잉과 사물, 특히 책이 예술에서 어떻게 표현되어 왔는지 조형작품연구를 통해 살펴보았다. 둘째, 표현 기법에 관한 연구에서는 섬유 표현 기법 중 머신스티치(machine-stitch)의 기법을 연구 한다. 머신스티치를 이용한 섬유조형 작품을 찾아 머신스티치의 조형적 가능성에 대해 살펴본다. 책의 형태를 머신스티치를 이용해서 드로잉의 모습으로 표현하는데 있어서 효과적인 기법을 연구한다. 셋째, 표현재료에 관한 연구에서는 머신스티치를 이용할 수 있는 소재 중 폴리 우레탄 비닐을 연구한다. 폴리우레탄 비닐 소재의 특징을 찾고 폴리우레탄 소재를 활용한 조형작품들을 연구, 분석한다. 본 연구자는 위와 같은 연구를 바탕으로 총 8점의 작품을 제작하였다. 작품은 머신스티치와 폴리우레탄 소재의 연구가 반영되었다. 일상의 책들을 드로잉 한 후 연구소재인 폴리우레탄비닐 위에 머신스티치기법을 이용해 작품을 완성했다. 이러한 드로잉 작업을 통해서 책 모습에 관심을 기울이게 되었다. 이는 연구자의 주변을 유연한 태도로 바라보는 계기가 되었으며, 생활 속 사물들이 우리의 삶과 예술을 융합하는 소중한 연결점임을 깨닫게 해주었다. 또한 연구과정을 통해 스스로를 되돌아보며 나의 존재를 확인하는 경험을 했다. 연구과정을 통해 본연구자는 드로잉과 책을 주제로 독자적이고 창의적인 조형언어를 발견하는 출발점을 찾게 되었다. 섬유예술전공자로서 제안하는 본 연구 작품이 섬유예술에 대한 해석이나 표현영역의 확대로 이어지기를 기대 한다.
