한국 초기 개신교와 여성교육

Abstract

1800년대 후반 한국에 전래된 개신교는 복음전도의 수단으로 교육과 의료사업을 시행하며 한국 사회 저변에 빠르게 정착했다. 여성교육이 전무하던 구한말 개신교가 시작한 여학교는 개화사상의 영향과 교단 간의 전도사업 경쟁 속에서 성장했다. 이를 통해 여성에게 교육기회를 제공하고, 여성을 사회의 구성원으로 인식하게 하는 기틀을 마련했다. 개신교의 여성교육 사업은 근대 여성교육에서 절대적인 비중을 차지했다. 민간 사립 여학교와 관공립 여학교의 부재 속에서 유일무이한 여성교육기관으로서 초기 여성교육을 전담했던 것이다. 개신교 선교사들이 설립한 대표적인 여성기관으로는 북미감리회의 지원으로 설립된 이화학당(현재 이화여자대학교 전신)과 북미장로회 계열의 정신여학교가 있다. 두 기관은 성경을 중심으로 근대식 교과과정을 정립해 나갔다. 이화학당의 교육 목표는 그리스도교를 체화한 한국적인 여성의 양성에 있었다. 영어교육을 병행했으며, 교육과 교과과정에 있어서 외국인 선교사의 의존도가 매우 높았다. 외국인 선교사에 의한 교육은 기독교 가치관을 강조하는 측면에서 이루어져 여성의 주체성과 근대적인 국가관 형성에 기여했다. 정신여학교의 교육 목표도 이화학당과 다르지 않았다. 그러나 정신여학교는 설립초기부터 한국인 교사의 도움을 받는 등 교육과 교육과정에서 한국인을 통한 지식과 사상의 전수가 이루어졌다. 이 과정에서 민족의식과 애국사상이 형성되었다. 두 학교의 초기 졸업생들은 각각 기독교 가치관과 민족의식에 입각해 교육과 복지, 의료분야를 중심으로 활동하며 일제식민 통치하에서 독립운동에 투신했다. 이 시기 주목할 만한 졸업생으로 이화학당의 김활란과 정신여학교의 김마리아가 있다. 김활란은 선교사에 의해 운영되던 이화를 인계받아 여성지도자양성을 위한 종합대학으로 발전시켰다. 김활란에게 교육은 곧 구국이자 독립운동이었으며, 특히 여성 고등교육의 중요성을 강조했다. 김마리아는 식민지 통치를 받는 국가의 참담한 현실에 대한 인식을 바탕으로 독립운동에 헌신했다. 특히 여성이 연합하여 항일투쟁을 해 나갈 때 온전한 독립이 가능하다고 주장하며 항일여성연합단체 조직에 힘썼다. 김활란과 김마리아는 모두 초기 여성지식인으로써 각자의 삶을 통해 여성교육의 필요성과 중요성을 입증했다. 여성교육기관의 발전에 기여하거나 여성의 사회 참여 분야에서 활약했던 것이다. 김활란은 ‘교육이 곧 구국’이라는 신념으로 이화학당을 여성고등교육기관으로 성장시켰다. 이는 김활란이 이화학당에서의 교육을 통해 형성한 기독교적인 가치관을 자신의 교육 구국론에 투영함으로써 여성교육의 목표를 상향조정한 것이었다. 한편 김마리아는 독립운동에 헌신하며 항일여성단체 조직을 통해 여성을 독립운동의 주체로 등장시켰다. 정신여학교를 통해 형성된 민족의식과 애국사상이 일제 식민지라고 하는 시대적 과제에 반응하여 발현된 것으로 특히 여성의 주체적인 활동을 강조하고, 여성의 주체적인 사회참여를 교육의 궁극적인 목표로 주장하였다. 이렇게 김활란이 주장한 여성고등교육론과 김마리아가 주장한 여성의 사회적 주체성은 한국 여성교육에서 상호 통합적으로 발전해 나갔다. 따라서 한국 여성교육은 개신교 선교사에 의해 시작되었으나 이후 교육받은 한국 여성교육자들에 의해 전문적 여성교육과 사회적 주체로서 여성의 자기확립이라는 근대 한국여성 교육관이 확립·정착되었다.;Protestant church, introduced to Korea in the late 1800s, utilized educational and medical projects as tools of propagating the Gospel, and rapidly took its place within the Korean society. Especially during the late years of its Chosun dynatsty, a period in which there was no education for women, the single-sex schools targeting women, provided an opportunity of education, and also developed the foundation for women to be active members of society. Ewha Haktang (the former body of Ewha Womans University), funded by the Woman's Foreign Missionary Societyof the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Chungshin Girl's School, funded by the North American Presbyterian Church, were the two most prominent institutions that Protestant missionaries found for women. These two institutions established a modern curriculum centered on the Holy Bible, and the early graduates fought for independence from Japanese colonialization, by working actively in areas of education, welfare, and medical services, Of this era, Helen Kim of Ewha Haktang and Maria Kim of Chungshin Girls' School are two very notable graduates. Helen Kim took over Ewha from its founding missionaries, and then developed it to a university for the women’s higher education. To Helen Kim, education was in itself, salvation of the nation, a movement for independence, and of course, higher education for women was of the utmost importance. Maria Kim herself also took active presence in fighting for independence. Arguing that the struggle against Japanese colonialism demands women to unite and participate, Maria Kim was key in establishing anti-Japan women associations, such as "Korean Patriotic Women Association". Throughout their lives, both Helen Kim and Maria Kim proved the importance of educating women and by contributing to the development of women’s educational institutions and social participation, they built the foundation for missionary work based women’s education to become self sustainable and to independently develop, so that Korean women may become the main actors of modern history.
