Abstract
CSMS(Concept in Secondary Mathmatics and Science) The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of cognitive demand degree for evaluation questions about the section of 'the characteristics of materials', and 'Electrolyte and Ion' in the science textbook of the second grade of middle school according to the revised curriculum at 2007. It also compares and analyzes the cognitive level of Korean 15-year-old students of the 3rd grade in the middle school through reviewing the previous studies. The results of this study would help incumbent teachers to set the efficient teaching and learning strategy by suggesting the evaluation questions which are suitable for the cognitive levels for the students. The three kinds of classification frame of CAT (Curriculum Analysis Taxonomy) which was developed by the CSMS program (Concept in Secondary Mathematics and Science Programme) in U.K. is used to analysis the level of cognitive demand degree for evaluation questions. The distribution per each textbook is also founded. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First of all, according to the previous studies on the cognitive level of 15-year-old students as the 3rd grade in the middle school, the distribution shows minimum 24.1% ~ maximum 55.5% for concrete operational level, minimum 33.5% ~ maximum 52.3% for transitional level, minimum 7.4% ~ maximum 53.4% for concrete operational level of the students. This result indicates that many students still remains in concrete operational level. Secondly, as examining the number of evaluation questions in the section of 'the characteristics of materials' and 'Electrolyte and Ion' for nine kinds of textbooks respectively, the average number of whole questions in the section 'the characteristics of material' is 38. It varies from 10 (in the textbook D) at the smallest to 51 (in the textbook B and G) at the largest. In the section of 'Electrolyte and Ion', the average number of whole questions is 24. The minimum number is 11 (in the textbook D and I) and the maximum number is 43 (in the textbook E). The numbers show various distribution per each textbook. Thirdly, seeing the analytic results of level of cognitive demand degree according to the evaluation questions in the section 'the characteristics of materials', the average distribution of question number for late concrete operational level (2B), early formal operational level (3A), late formal operational level (3B) comes to 7.9%, 36.8%, 15.8% respectively in the main questions. In the case of final questions, each of the distribution reaches 2.6%, 21.1%, 15.8%. Even it is not known whether the main questions or final questions contain higher level of cognitive demand degree when comparing the distribution of the average number of questions, but it shows various distribution in the main questions and final questions per each textbook. Fourthly, seeing the analytic results of level of cognitive demand degree according to the evaluation questions in the section 'Electrolyte and Ion', the average distribution of question number for late concrete operational level (2B), early formal operational level (3A), late formal operational level (3B) comes to 4.0%, 20.0%, 20.0% respectively in the main questions. In the case of final questions, each of the distribution reaches 4.0%, 20.0%, 32%. The distribution of final question of late formal operation level (3B) appears slightly higher than the main questions. Fifthly, following the result which analyze the total level of cognitive demand degree according to the evaluation questions for each textbook to sum up two sections of the middle school science 3 in the chemistry area, the average distribution of question umber for late concrete operational level (2B), early formal operational level (3A), late formal operational level (3B) reaches 9.5%, 50.8%, 39.7% respectively. In the case of early formal operational level (3A), the distribution is from minimum 39.8% (in the textbook E) to maximum 62.2% (in the textbook G). In the case of late formal operation level (3B), it is from minimum 29.7% (in the textbook G) to maximum 49.3% (in the textbook H). Such results indicate that although most of evaluation questions of the middle school science 3 require the formal operational level, the cognitive levels of most students still remain in concrete operation level. Thus, there is some difference between the level of cognitive demand degree of evaluated questions which are suggested in the textbook and the actual cognitive level of the students. So many students seem to have difficulty in solving the evaluation questions. Because the evaluation questions become the factor to check student's achievement for the teaching goals as well as to make motivation for accomplishment during teaching and learning process, it is important to suggest suitable evaluation questions for the student's cognitive level. Therefore, through this study data, teacher can by improve the interest degree which has reduced due to the mismatch between the level of cognitive demand degree of the textbook and the actual cognitive level of students in the science. This study also can give teachers a good direction for selecting the science 3 textbook which will be used from 2013 in the middle school according to the revised curriculum at 2009.
